So…what do you get when you take some of the best – and brightest – people around RPG Maker Network, put them all in a secret chat-room, supply them all with cookies and milk and have them all try to create a stunning work in progress RPG for the ages? Well, depending on your point of view, you get Reincarnation ~ Dawn Of War ~, which what appears at first to be a Valkyrie Profile Chinese knockoff sort of game (which I have NEVER played even though I am a sucker for Tri-Ace games). But nevertheless, despite it sharing some slight similarities with a certain familiar franchise (which name we will not speak of again) Reincarnation: Dawn Of War actually manages to pull itself from the very heavens itself to deliver what promises to be a sweet revelation when the full version is delivered to all of us. Usually I don’t like playing demos until the full version has been finished, but since I’m participating in May Media Madness Month and I’m a sucker for Nessiah’s artistic flair – here goes nothing (I have my suicide pills ready)!!!

The Story

*sarcasm* Just like every other RPG…

Our story begins after a brief intro screen (which is very cool, BTW) where our first of three heroes of Dawnborn, Vidar and Valkyrie wannabe, Sigrun, are paying their respects to Vidar’s old war buddy, Baldir, in a pretty emotional farewell scene (okay, nothing like Aerith’s death scene – but still pretty moving). After saying their goodbyes, the pair returns to Asgard to find out that Loki and his men have attacked the village and is slaughtering all those who dwell within in it! After looking around town and slaying the monsters that are looking to make a meal out of our two respectable heroes (Mmmmm…roasted Valkyrie on a stick), they meet Hakon (the badassian of the group) as they look to drive out all the beasts.

The Gameplay

No time to pay attention to Hakon’s sexy poker face – we got a job to do!!!

Reincarnation is your typical RPG fare that seems to borrow a lot of elements from classics such as Mana Khemia, Final Fantasy X, and, of course, Valkyrie Profile itself (damn, well I tried to not bring it up). On the field, you can find many scattered items, like potions and such with the use of a question mark bubble that appears overhead the heroes when going around to search for things on the ground. When it appears, you can tell that something is nearby and you wanna do your best to find what you’re looking for. You can also find floating orbs that can save your game – and some of them can even heal you to full health! Combat is your typical standard fare, too. You and your enemies take commands with the help of an action gauge to help distinguish who is going to go first and what not (similar to Final Fantasy X). You can attack, defend, use items, and use special abilities called Seidhrs to do some fiercesome damage in combat. Also, for an added bonus, after five successful attacking turns, you can use a super move which will do some formidable damage to your opponents when its built up! It won’t cost you any MP for using it, and it’s great to use on bosses. Reincarnation ~ Dawn Of War ~ will take a little while to understand its controls and flow, but once you do, it plays just like any other fine-tuned RPG. At first, I was a bit overwhelmed by how difficult the battles were early on, especially with how powerful some of these enemies are and the lack of damage I was able to do. But as I got accustomed to the game’s system, I soon found myself right at home understanding what to do. Battles are incredible intuitive and very simple to know what you have to do and what not, a key mistake that most RPG’s seem to make by trying to oversimplify their system by trying to jack in as much junk as they possibly can. Too much of this can confuse and frustrate a player. And I’m extremely grateful that this game had a very simplistic battle system that gave me a chance to get to learn about its customs. Excellent job, you guys!

The Soundtrack

Weiss…hayn? Faust…hayn? …How ‘bout I just call them axe 1 and axe 2

Simply one word: freakin’ fantastic! If you’re a fan of New Age type of music, then this OST will be your new personal best friend! I personally love the OST and really have nothing to nitpick about at all. A lot of the tracks fit really well and some of my personal favorites have to be the Asgard Village theme, Battle Theme and Memoria Path themes. Really, you can pick any one of the tracks and they can be instant classics. A lot of tunes seem to remind me a lot like I was playing more of Lufia II more than anything else, which is great! Love the OST. I guess the only minor complaint I had is that there was no cool victory theme at the end of a battle... Oh well…

The Aesthetics

B-But the censorship's!!!

Just like everything else in this game, absolutely amazing quality. Battle sprites look superb; portraits and menu H.U.D’s look great – what’s not to like; this is a pretty polished game from the looks of it. Perhaps my only disappointment is on the in-game sprites. I’m not saying that they’re all terrible but just…I just can’t help but feel that it’s not as specular as the rest of the package has to offer. Oh well, one minor grip, what are you going to do… With the amount of skilled artists working on this game, it’s no wonder how pretty this game looks.

The End Result

That’s it? BOOOOOOO!!!

Lenneth has every reason in Asgard to be jealous of this game! For a short demo, this game delivers the goods and makes the player wanting MOAR!!! It’s too bad it’s on the tad short side, but whatever - it’s a demo! I can forgive that. I can’t remember too many demos that made me want more in anticipation of the game’s final release date – but this game sure did deliver! Excellent visuals, a fantastic soundtrack, and a simplistic but effective battle system and you got yourself a game that, if finished, could very well challenge for the crown of RMN’s best of the best. All I can say about this game is this: Please don’t disappoint me, guys – please! If you cancel this game or fall asleep on the job, I am going to find out where all of you live, burn your houses down, and then laugh at you while I cry myself to sleep. Is that a criminal offense? Probably. But is it a criminal offense to love something such as this? I guess not. Hurry up, guys! Finish this game. FINISH IT!!! If you don’t, I’m going to *secretly* give this a game 2. But for now…!!!

OVERALL GRADE:
5 / 5 - A ~ Perfection. Absolute Perfection.
