Sacred Reviews: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Introduction

I do find it bit odd that this project is marked as complete seeing as how it's a mere tech demo with a single stage. While, I realize that certain projects on this site like ~ABS have a similar purpose in mind. At least that game had a fully functional story to go along with it. With that having been said this tech demo does show a lot of promise and I wish this was an actual game rather then a meager tutorial stage meant to inspire others to create a project using its assets.

Gameplay

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feels like your standard side scrolling, beat-em up adventure. You've got your standard score gauge for beating up enemies, breaking objects, or picking up various items. As such the game honestly just reminds me of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist. Albeit this game isn't as refined as that game, but this tech demo does show that a decent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan game could be made using RPG Maker 2003. I can only hope that someone is eventually up to the task of creating it.

Graphics

On a graphical level this tech demo has its ups and downs in my opinion. On one hand I like the sprite work for Master Splinter, Leonardo, and the mousers. On the other hand the rooftops feel a bit uninspired to say the least.

Bugs

During my first play through for this game I encountered an odd glitch. I've never been able to repeat it, but it did allow me to move up and down on the screen as well as walk on air near the end of the stage. It also prevented me from picking up the various free lives and pizzas scattered through the stage as well. And to finish things off it prevented me from talking with Master Splinter. Oddly enough I could still break boxes and kill mousers though.

Conclusion

While the game does contain an odd bug that seems to pop-up every now and great while. I don't really have any major issues with this tech demo and can only hope that an actual project gets born from this someday. Since, it would be nice to play as someone other then Leonardo. As it stands though this tech demo is worth a whirl if your a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Nice review, sacred. The idea of creating an engine for others to use is admirable but I wonder if anyone will ever use it. I have no desire to make a TMNT beat-em-up myself, but who knows, maybe someone can make something awesome out of it?
