Alternatives to Towns
One idea I had was to simply not create a town map at all. You enter the town, and the game displays a picture of the town from some perspective or other. A menu is displayed asking what you want to do; visit the inn, go to the item shop, listen for rumors, etc.
Shops would have their own picture of the shopkeep behind the counter, inns and such likewise.
Finally, you would exit the town, and it would kick back to the overworld map.
It's really a very old-school way of handling it. Check out PC Game, Darklands as an example.

Hello Everyone
*Kicks open door to RMN Anonymous meeting. Ooh, cupcakes.
When I joined in 2001 it was just picking up steam. It was full steam ahead in 2003. I think the decline started a couple of years later.
Refuge of the Damned eh. I see I'm in good company.

Windows 8 Themes
author=Mr_DetectiveWindows Moe hahaha. ANIME RULEZ !Also, what you guys think about it ? Is Windows 8 a good Operating System ?
I have one good thing to say about it. It's fast. That's about it.
Windows 8 appears to be a move on Microsoft's part to unify all of their platforms, from tablets, to phones, to desktops and laptops. While a neat idea in theory, I have a couple of issues with it.
1 - A desktop computer is not a phone or a tablet, it is a desktop computer. I want an interface designed for a mouse and keyboard. Leave these touchscreen interfaces to the touchscreen devices.
2 - This is an obvious push to bottleneck the software market to pass through the Gates of Microsoft. Windows 8 has it's own "app store", and in order for software to work within Windows 8's "Metro" interface, it has to go through some kind of Microsoft certification process thingy. This is potentially bad news for a platform that's traditionally been considered rather open for development.
Intel discontinuing socketted CPUs
Read about this a little while ago, and while it's cause for concern, as long as AMD stays afloat I'm not too worried....
Please please please don't die AMD.

So this is the place huh? Not bad.
Hi, my name is Ryan, currently known as 8bitbeard. (On account of my gigantic beard IRL.) Formerly known as Bondo, but that was a different time and place.
I literally haven't joined an Internet forum since Gaming World was just starting it's hey-day, and that was clear back in my senior year of high school. Sure, I've kept one finger in the game design bucket, just so I knew what kind of stuff was getting made, but it's been nearly a decade since I've made anything with RPG Maker or any other sort of 'Maker' thing. I've been too busy going to college, dropping out of college, working, charming the ladies, getting married, reproducing, and growing a gigantic beard.
Lately, I've found myself in cruise-control mode. No current plans to move or change jobs or anything. I'm quite comfortable really. Between odd hobbies and projects, I found myself wasting a lot of time on the Internet, which got me thinking "Remember when?"
So I wandered over to my old stomping ground gamingw only to find a smoking crater where it used to be. I checked back a few times just to make sure, and yep, gamingw basically resembles Megaton after you push the button. Something about Salt now, I don't know...
Basically, I really do miss the amateur game design scene, even though I never made anything noteworthy and never finished anything.
So here I am, introducing myself to this here community. I'm rapidly approaching 30, but still passionate about my favorite past-time of gaming and playing around with making games. I'm hoping that exposure to you crazy individuals might inspire something creative in me once again.
Beard power.
