Why is vanity a bad thing?

I have a cousin who like, post a selfie everyday. She is what I consider plain-looking, but she "works very hard" to make herself look good. She recently got rid of her mole near her nose and she's really good at make-up (looking natural and not over-the-top btw). Even though she may be vain at times she's got a great personality and she's very friendly.

pls don't tell me it's one of the titles of your favourite band's songs

There's nothing wrong with being concerned with your appearance and wanting to look. That's not what vanity is. Loving one self isn't quite self-love. Where vanity comes into play, there is a sense of superiority and there is the presence of self-edification.

If you want to really understand vanity, read this.

Vanity is when you idolize yourself too much, or excessively. It's when you say, "I'm better, I'm greater, I'm mightier", and you puff yourself up to make yourself look bigger and better than others. The word "vanity" is often linked to "futility". It's when you see your own self and your own image as being far more important, or far more significant than someone else's. In essence, vanity is loving yourself at the expense of loving others. It's classified as a purely selfish pursuit, without taking heed to the emotions or the spiritual wellbeing of persons other than yourself. That's vanity in its purest form.

You might say someone is "vain", but they might not be truly vain. They might just have a confidence in their own visual self, or they like certain ways that they act, but not to the point of being excessive, or at the expense of others. This, I believe, is self-confidence, and it is a self-empowering trait that is not in and of itself evil. But vanity, I believe, is an evil construct that uses self-confidence to make others feel worthless, and less valued.
"excessive belief in one own's worth, abilities and appearance"

pls don't ever link me to that Greek myth ever again. thnx.

and never lecture me again at what that word means, because, that word is clearly a synonym for cave..!!!
A clue might be that the words vain and vanity come from the latin for "empty"

All I know is that the Ultima spell from Final Fantasy Tactics told me to "Brush off vanity and show reality!" :P

I'm probably terrible for looking up this game as a possible tongue-in-cheek response.
