Finally tried Octopath. The writing wasn't as terrible as I expected, and the battle-system was actually one of the most engaging I've played in a long time (thankfully, it's at the forefront). Verdict is still out on the visuals. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Honestly the writing fluctuates between Pretty Good (Primrose, Tressa, Ophilia) and "Who Thought This Was Okay?" (Hanaat). Just really depends on which characters you work with first.

Good lord I hope you didn't start with Hanaat.
I started the game with Therion. He reminded me of Zidane just a little bit, an arrogant, sassy thief who frequently walks the line between charming and obnoxious.

I'm only a couple hours in, so I'll reserve my overall judgement on the writing. It's not great by Square-Enix standards (...if that company can be held up as a badge of quality anymore), but it's good enough to keep you engaged.

Music is nice so far. And as I said, the battles are excellent (that's coming from someone who usually hates JRPG battles).

My only issue with the visuals is pretty much what everyone else has said. It's often difficult to see what's going on in the maps.

Eventually, you can learn to ignore the excessive bloom and Instagram-esque post effects; and focus on the sprites, which are nicely-drawn and nostalgic. I would have preferred the game use more traditional pixel art, or even hand-drawn backgrounds, but I can see what they were going for.

I got it when it first came out.

I liked it at the beginning. I started with the Warrior. I can't think of the name but I liked it. The battle system was nice early on but now it has greatly fatigued me. A single boss battles can take me 45 minutes to recruit a character now and I still have 2 or 3 characters left to recruit. So I set it down and haven't picked it back up again.

I recently heard that things let up a little after you have all the characters so I might muscle through it.

I stumbled upon her as my second party member. Jesus, the writing is god-awful.

I think there was literally a line that read "...Thou and I will slay such a beast."
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Somehow this bothers me less than the alchemist dude though. Every scene he's in is written like something from a random FF14 sidequest, but drawn out to be 20 times as long. I just don't care about anything he or anyone around him does or says. I'd rather have H'aanit's bad fake inconsistent shakespearean english than Alfyn's scenes that make me root for the giant snake because it's a more interesting character than the hero.

You're doing something seriously wrong. The boss battles aren't short, but they definitely don't take half an hour or longer. I think the longest one I fought was a little over 15 minutes? And that was because I intentionally went in with a bad party to try to get EXP for them.
