I hate closed-minded gamers and game reviewers... (Metroid: Other M)

Yeah; companies can and do make bad decisions. Probably because they don't invest their time into popular thoughts about their games and ideas via polls and surveys. However, they can't revert their decisions. It's dumb for followers (ex-followers, perhaps) to flame up. What is gained, besides immaturity? The creators of Metroid are banking on the notion that people don't squeal like pigs when something - for once - doesn't go their way.
The review linked to in the OP did far from what you can call "flame up". Heck, has anyone here flamed up?

They trust you are a fan of their decisions, and if you don't like it; tough. There were other decisions in the past you did like, because you were a fan, and there may be plenty more. Their decision on Samus was just more widespread, and therefore more shocking. While a lot of people (old followers, perhaps) dislike, they've certainly gained new followers who do. Not bad for a game that's more than 20 years old.
But if you see it from that perspective, it makes even more sense for disgruntled fans to post negative reviews and posts. It would be within their interest to make the game gain as few new followers as possible so to discourage the company from making further decisions they don't approve of.

re: samus as a blond,
People don't get it. People are idiots. A company creates a canon, and they create an ethos. If you happen to like it - so be it - but you'll still know absolutely nothing of their intentions. Samus could have been female for years, the early gaming consoles probably didn't have enough pixel quality to give her tits. Slight sarcasm aside, you can't know what a company is thinking. Especially if you are looking at the Japanese market. The Japanese gaming market is a kind of a recluse. They make changes without a majority of their audience knowing about it, and these changes could disenchant followers. You don't define their games, they do, and they have free reign to change it.
While the company have a free reign to change their games, the consumers have a free reign to complain about those changes. The "free" works both ways you see.
A Look At 2D Action RPGs
2d action is fun as is getting stronger as you proceed. That should cover most of what there is to it.
Hiding the HUD
The HUD should not be to obstructive. Beyond that however, it will depend on what you're going for. The main point of hiding the HUD is immersion, but I don't think full immersion is always the answer. Sometimes I'm happy to be reminded that it's a game, like when the game has an item crafting system that allows me to customize my own killer combo. In other times, the immersion is lost anyway due to other circumstances and it would be a really bad trade if you hide information for practically nothing.

I'm taking on The Staff of Cyrenia.
And I lost. Or rather, I lost the patience to continue. That game starts out decent, but becomes more and more frustrating as it goes on. Dungeons becomes longer and longer, random encounters gradually takes longer to fight (but doesn't ever get hard) and the encounter rate is frequent. There's no way I'm going to finish that game. I may try another one though.

My statement, "what the hell was wrong with it", was moreso me saying I didn't have a problem with it. And, yes, I know the poster explained his reasons, but that certainly didn't mitigate me as to not rant about it. I'm just disappointed with all the flake this game's been getting, but seeing as how it's basically a 1-on-100 battle, I don't think I can convince anyone otherwise.
That's fine, but if you want to rant about it, why not rant about the actual complaints he made? Failing that, at least rant about general complaints against the game instead of issues barely anyone even mentioned.

And--you non-believers might want to shield your eyes from the next few words--but, I actually liked the story. Yeah, I enjoyed it--sue me. I mean, what the hell was wrong with it? Are you so shallow as to dislike how Samus--a normal, human female--was so close to a man? Oh, and dare I say, how she actually got some much needed character development? Yes, I know, up until Other M Samus was almost a complete enigma: she barely spoke and was pretty much a blank slate in terms of personality, so there was nothing for them to "break down" other than the metaphorical veil that actually was preventing her from becoming a rounder character. Final verdict: Did they need to give Samus a backstory and evolve her character? No. Did it ruin her character? Absolutely not.
This is a straw-man if I ever saw one. The poster did not once complain about Samus being close to a man. He did however complain about plotholes, inconsistencies, dropped plot threads and the lack of emotional spectrum among other things. Maybe you should have addressed those points instead of non-existent complaints?
The poster did also explain your question of "what the hell was wrong with it?" very clearly. He did not only tell us what he didn't like, but also why he didn't like it and how he perceived those elements to be poorly done. Heck, over 80% of the post is precisely that, him explaining those thing. How the heck did you manage to miss that? Did you replace his issues with issues you made up?

I think I'll use VX for this one. I usually prefer XP, but for this one VX fits better. There is one problem though, VX doesn't have battlers for main characters since you don't see them in battle. It's a problem because you will be able to fight the other party members later for story reasons.
Thanks, I'll check it out.
