Haha, Sated! I think times have changed sadly...even for a hunk of junk such as Dilemma
@Kylaila- I like your sentiments but the game doesn't really have anything to offer. I think I covered some points decently but at the same time totally trashed/talk shit about others.
I honestly believe this is a game people shouldn't even bother with. Trying to get the developer to improve from a review of Dilemma is futile I feel. Because I really have no knowledge of the developer's true design potential. If this is what they make then I don't want to encourage them to continue. :(
@Liberty- Good to know! I'll mark it as a 1 next time if I think it's awful
I'm actually curious how such a game got accepted in the first place. I realize no one could have known that there is very little content within the game but by screenshots alone!

I'm sorry to hear about that. I am actually afraid to review a lot of games, mainly because there are so many developers getting offended by criticism nowadays.
Also, I dare you to review Peace Sword. Let the hate flow through you! Give in to your aggression and your review shall be complete.

I'm not too fearful of retorts when it comes to reviewing. I am in no way a good reviewer yet, I have much to learn! But I'll always be honest and won't pussyfoot if I have the option.
Maybe I will luiishu! :D I feel though I wouldn't be brutal about it but I'll definitely give it a try. I have been staying away from the Swap Games though for reviewing just because I know it was two developers and a event creation so I didn't want to do it too seriously.
But yeah, man! I'll give Peace Sword a try and more than likely a review :)
edit: It might be a minute though. I'm only trying to review games that have none or are unrated but complete.

Well, it's that sentiment that shines through, haha.
Should they? I don't know. Some devs just want to create something for themselves.
I always feel reviews here are for both devs and gamers alike. Saying it's not worth playing is important and needed, but that's not all there is to it.
Saying the dev should better stop entirely is a lil overbearing imho.
There are many young creators, there are many who won't need to create gems to have fun with it, and there's many reasons to do what they do in their free time. Telling them it's pointless to try is something they need to decide for themselves, after all. Describing how lacking the game is already gives a clear assessment of the point they are at.
That said, if you want to do your review with that in mind, just try to keep the frustration down and go over each step that is confusing and lacking and why. Elaborate it a little more, say it's not worth your time and it's good to go.
People can see it's not worth it without you having to have that statement in every paragraph :)
And eh .. with all the defensiveness thrown about. There were one or two game pages taken down .. but it's fine if people get that way, too, the review's still there when they calmed down. All good ~
You're not being asked to coddle anyone or pussyfoot around what you think. This isn't about reinforcing somebody's notion that he's a special snowflake. This is about helping each other to improve our gam mak. Some parts of your review might be construed as being counter to that objective.
I understand the difference between a beginner game that tries and a game that well, is something else entirely.
I can always respect the developer and their efforts even if I didn't enjoy it or believe it needed improvement.
While being negative can lead some away I think it can strengthen too. I remember when I first started and getting some negative feedback. I worked on it and even though back then I might have lashed back it still stuck with me and made me want to be better. I don't think that things always have to be sugarcoated to get through.
Survival of the fittest in a way. If they run at the sign of negative comments then maybe this isn't the field or hobby for them.
Even if I don't agree with comments I always learn from them regardless.
If someone told me that my game was total shit, keeping in mind that is one persons opinion would still make me want to prove to them and everyone else that might agree but don't say it. If only to prove to myself that I can create something worthwhile.
My games are in no way perfect or amazing but they are something others do enjoy and what I am proud of. And that's after working through all the bullshit.
We all have a drive to be better in us. Even after all these years I'm still a novice and want to be better. But I also know my limitations quite well.
Also, this isn't directly at you Kylaila, i'm mostly just talking/rambling now. :P
Basically we all learn from experience and sometimes the harsher the experience the more we learn from it. I'm glad I got harsh criticism as a youth because it's what drove me to continue and get better. This doesn't work for everyone but I think it's good for those who're serious about their craft.
@piano- I do in a way feel that I have to coddle though, to a degree. Trying to improve Dilemma is like taking a literal pile of shit and trying to make it more. At its core it's still excrement. I could tell the developer to put a little margarita umbrella in it and set some sunglasses on it but it's still shit.
Don't get me wrong though, this is just my feeling for this one game. I have taken in what everyone is saying to heart, believe me. As I just said, this is how I learn and I have much of that to do since it is a gamer/developer relationship here in this community.

Definitely with piano. Just package it well and drop what is unnecessary negative fluff.
You can say "this is shit" and you can say "As it is, it's shit. It needs X, Y and Z."
You can even add an "for example in that one map you have A but no idea why it's there, that's really confusing"
There's a few points you could make sense of as well, like did you notice when you turned into Peach? Upon consumption of stuff, after time passed or just "I have no idea why that happened" - in which case you can make it a point that things happening outside the rules you know, which is bad.

Aye, I'm with ya. I sometimes am shy with it, but that's stupid.
You gotta praise what's genuinly good, and critize what's genuinly bad.

Uh, yeah, don't ever tell someone to stop making. That's just an asshole thing to say. There are lots of ways to say 'you need to learn a bit more about what is and is not good design' that doesn't amount to chasing away new developers. We were all shitty game makers once. Some of us still are (just a little better at it than we used to be.)
