Your goal is to reduce your opponent to zero life - therefore, you must physically punch them every time a monster attacks. The game's over when one of you is unconscious. If you pass out before you can deliver the coup de grace, it's a draw.

I am 33 and have been hopelessly hooked on Magic: the Gathering since the age of 15. This shit's more addictive than coke. Of course, there are worse things to be addicted to...like coke.

Magic: the Gathering is essentially this: your love of fantasy art and story telling are combined with a customizable strategy role playing elements to create a game rather like chess.

I've always been partial to white and blue.

As to how to win, the methods are thus:

HP failure: reducing your opponent to zero hitpoints.
Card death: library runs out. This process can be sped up with millstones and other deck killing cards. There's also a card that can remove an opponent's library from the game (the text requires you to tear up the card), but I can't remember what it is.
Some ultrarare cards that kill an opponent outright, including the following: Door to Nothingness, which removes target opponent from the game (I have this one), Phage: the Untouchable, which if unblocked, anything she attacks (you included, this is another I have) is removed from the game.
Some ultrarare cards that allow you to win outright, including the following: Amulet of Quoz, which allows you and your opponent to flip a coin to see who wins, Barren Glory, which, if you have it on your field, provided you have no other cards in play and your hand is empty, you win the game.
