Because they didn't include *insert_best_nintendo_character_here*! (spoilers this is eggplant wizard)
My issue with Robin is that they're the customizable player unit in the game and in the game itself there's never a suggestion of what they're intended to look like unlike Mass Effect or w/e. Now Smash Bros decides to try and implement a visually undefined character. The whole approach and solution to me feels really shoehorned in.
I don't care too much for Lucina either way but if I had to choose I'd rather have a more recent character like Lucina than Roy or Marth or Ike (I forget who's in exactly, my Melee & Brawl memories are mush). I hope they don't end up as similar characters like Mario and Dr.Mario, them all being the blue sword(wo)man hero of FE games. I know my casual scrubness experiences the FE characters were similar.
Personally I'd swap Robin out for FE:A Tiki. She's a multi-FE game character, isn't yet another sword person, is defined (as much as a character can be in FE). Keep Lucina, drop the old FE protagonists from the GBA/GC days and avoid FE sword bloat, and reallocate resources into getting Eggplant Wizard in!

fire emblem might not be as popular to western gamers, but it is definitely worthy of the attention it's getting in smash bros. FE:A is easily the best game in the series, and hopefully more people will play it now that it has more exposure. That's what I like about smash bros, it introduces the player to characters they wouldn't normally know about, i know I wouldn't love FE like I do now if Marth and Roy weren't included in Melee :\
does that mean I would've kept Marth/Ike? Probably not.

I liked Ike as a Brawl character, but I have no idea who he is or even what game he is from. But to me Smash is about Nintendo's legacy in gaming, and there isn't much "legacy" in a bit character from a very recent game, especially contrasted against the rich plethora of characters they could have chosen from the annals of Nintendo's storied history.
it was a lame and disappointing choice.
(Captain N for next reveal plz)

author=kentonaThe thing is, kent, Fire Emblem as a whole DOES have a legacy among Nintendo's franchises. The series began on the Famicom (Japanese NES), not the GBA, and it was VERY popular in its home country, at least enough to warrant its own animated movie.

The problem is that due to no imports before the GBA era, most people in the West don't acknowledge the series existence, and with our general indifference to RPGs in general, it's still not as popular here compared to Japan. Granted, I still think this was an underwhelming reveal, simply because I have yet to play any Fire Emblem game to care about any of these characters, but I can definitely understand why they would be included in the roster. If the devs can put in some recent Pokemon (Greninja) in the game, then why not characters from the latest FE game?
EDIT: corrected this post to state that the series actually began on the NES not the SNES. :x

Rosalina & Luma and the Wii Fit Trainer says "Hi."
Anyways, I’m happy about the exclusions. I kinda had this feeling in the back of mind that it would be something Fire Emblem related, as Chrom was sort of the last “duh, duh” pick that was left to be included. But, to my surprise and many other people’s surprises - it wasn’t Chrom at all. I thought that he was the main character of Fire Emblem: Awakening until I read up some more about the subject.
Yeah, I have never played a Fire Emblem game either but I do know who Marth, Ike, Chrom, Lucina and Robin are, probably more so than some of the other characters that are in this game. And I don’t mind a strange inclusion to something like this as long as that fighter is unique enough in some sort of way or feels a bit different or it’s something that this game really needs.
For Lucina, for example, we have finally gotten ourselves a female swordsman at long last! I know a lot of my female friends are super uber excited to finally be able to play as somebody in this game who isn’t a princess or somebody dressed up in very tight spandex; this was a great inclusion. Having Robin in there, both male and female, similar to the Villager and Wii Fit Trainers provides another class not yet seen represented in Smash Bros. from a Fire Emblem game: a magic user!
And, of course, seeing Captain Falcon returning was the icing on the cake. :)
Yeah, it’s not Dixie, Lloyd, Ridley, Bomberman or anybody else semi-important like that - but it’s still a great inclusion. Good job, you guys.
(Actually, my mom, who used to main Zelda in Brawl, is seriously now considering switching over to Lucina after finding out about the news, either that or the Wii Fit Trainer.)
Professor Layton? Bomberman? HATSUNE MIKU?!
What kind of crazy MUGEN-laced ganja have you people been smoking?
edit: Well, I guess Snake last game and Megaman this time are pretty left-field, but... I don't see much reason to anticipate any more "outsiders" for this one.

Yes because a character from an immensely popular recent series with only one game not on a Nintendo console is an outsider
hello Pac-Man
