Flowchart based combat system

Here's a sample I thought of.

Allow the player to map four actions to four keys (or something of the sort). Have battles play out like very slow paced Street Fighter; you can tell when you're being stunned, or whatever, and use the move you can to get out of it.

A one sided version of this is Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume. Here's a video.

It might be hard to abstract out of that, but what's going on is each character has a set of moves equipped. When their button is pressed, they use it. This allows for some interesting combos. See if you can make that in a one v one situation.

Let's not return to square one with this debate.

@Killer Wolf: That sort of extremism kind of argues against... everything. Are you sure that's what you want to go with?

What about the 22 children stabbed at an elementary school in China?

As noted earlier, none of those children died. While people do die in the knife attacks that go on in China, it's a lower fatality rate than assaults with guns.

Not terribly convinced about the arms race thing, whether it's forward or backwards. While poisons and explosions have been used before, they're certainly not convenient enough to use, even less so in crimes of passion type things. I have a hard time seeing people suicide truck bombing a school, for what that's worth.

Here's a question: What sort of control, prevention methods, affordable therapeutic services, nuclear satellites, whatever, could have stopped this particular attack?

Connecticut Shooting

Armed guards at important institutions, especially schools, is something I wouldn't object to. As long as it's trained personnel, not teachers.

Connecticut Shooting

Seeing as part of the gun control argument is that guns allow people to kill more people, bringing up the number of fatalities is relevant. Doesn't mean one person murdered is less significant than ten, just that one person murdered is numerically fewer murders than ten.

At class, so I'll have a difficult time finding sources. I'll try to hit you up on IRC later.

While knives aren't magical non-lethal weapons, mine is a point many people will bring up about this event: While the China slashing proves that banning guns tighter gun control won't prevent attacks, it reduces fatalities.

Incidentally, and admittingly, conventional gun control would not have prevented this. Cannot see any confirmation if the assault rifle was used in this attack or not. Weapons appear to have been stolen from someone who legally obtained them. Attempting to find unbiased sources on this, but finding fair handed sources on gun control issues is... difficult.

E: Consistent terminology.

You can't exactly drive into a school or knive students.
Sure you can knife students: http://www.latimes.com/news/world/worldnow/la-man-slashes-22-children-near-china-school-20121214,0,6383015.story

How many died during the shooting compared to the slashing?

Answer: 28 dead to 0.

Is there a particular reason a citizen needs to own an assault rifle?

Connecticut Shooting

There is a point in there. After every mass shooting, it's become standard practice to say "Now isn't the time to talk about guns, it's inconsiderate." It's always too soon. Then the next shooting happens, and we talk about the last event in comparison, but it's still "too soon" to talk about gun control.

Gun control may or may not be the solution here. The popular idea on Reddit at the moment is promoting mental health by perhaps screening those getting guns, or just making therapeutic services available in general. Either way, we need a serious discussion about this on the higher political channels. Just pushing it to "not the time" after each shooting isn't getting anything done.
