Recruiting producer, writer and game designer for RPG
Thanks for the reminder, Eplipswich. I'm naturally a pretty sunny person, and for this reason I sometimes forget that things don't always work out the way I want them to. You're right, we should be prepared for the worst. However, I think that when dealing with people, we have to be careful not to expect the worst from them. If we expect the worst from people, it's likely that we'll treat them unjustly. When it comes to dealing with people, I think that there's a thin line between being cautious and being prejudiced. Having prejudicial thoughts about a person will often cause me to treat that person unjustly. Long story short, I think we should be prepared for the worst and treat people fairly.
And to your point ,Sauce, I understand that it's unlikely that I'll find the kind of teammates I've outlined. I, myself, will make mistakes in the future and fall short of the expectations I have of my teammates. I think the important thing is that the team sets expectations for its members. By doing so, we'll encourage the right people to join our team and at the same time encourage all team members to behave in a desirable fashion (be diplomatic, committed, etc.).

I'm glad that you're considering joining our team, Irili. I look forward to hearing from you. I encourage you to reach out to me even if you have little experience. Everybody has to start somewhere.
Thanks for the compliments, Kentona. I'm glad that you found my original post to be clear and well-written. I'm also glad that you think I'm earnest. I try to be earnest, and I want to be perceived as being earnest. I'm curious and I'd like to ask why you think that me or my post might be naive. I think I'm optimistic. Thanks for wishing me good luck. It feels good to see someone from the community express their support.

Recruiting producer, writer and game designer for RPG
Hello, my name is Taharka and I develop video games as a hobby. My teammate and I are looking to recruit one producer, one writer and one game designer to work with us on an RPG. So far, the team currently consists of one writer and one game designer. Our writer is the producer and game designer of a fighting game that is eight months into the development process. We are currently in the very early stages of developing ideas for an RPG set in a cyberpunk, space setting. We have not made any final decisions regarding the game's story or the game engine we'll use to create the game. We plan to recruit artists, programmers and animators later to help us create the RPG.
For all three positions, we are looking for individuals that:
- have a passion for RPGs and management/writing/game design
- are highly motivated
- will demonstrate initiative
- have strong written communication skills and interpersonal skills
- can work independently and in a team
- and are willing to spend at least 10 hours a week doing project-related tasks when required
Experience is not necessary, but it is appreciated.
Producer
The producer's tasks include managing the team, managing the team forum, keeping records, recruiting new members, contacting publishers and other outside parties and supporting team members when required. Furthermore, the producer must be willing to supervise the project until its completion. The producer must demonstrate maturity, organization and diplomacy. The producer does not unilaterally make major decisions, but like all team members, he/she has a say in major decision-making. If the producer wishes to do so, he/she may assist in writing, game design or other areas.
Writer
The writer's tasks include writing comprehensible storylines and compelling characters, creating detailed character and environment descriptions for the team's artists, penning realistic dialogue for the game's characters, finalizing the game's script, communicating ideas to game designers and artists and writing text needed for game marketing and sales.
Game designer
The game designer's tasks include creating a detailed design document describing how the game plays, researching game engines and game platforms and working with writers, programmers and artists to bring ideas into reality.
All three positions are unpaid. Here are some of the benefits of participating in this project:
- fulfill a dream by creating an RPG
- gain experience and knowledge
- make valuable contacts
- work with passionate and friendly game developers
- add to your resume or portfolio
- receive recognition from the gaming community (if the game is a critical success)
- and earn money (if the game is a financial success)
If you're interested in working with us, please email taharka2@gmail.com. Please briefly introduce yourself and talk about your goals, your interests and any experience you might have. Thank you for your consideration.

Pyrodoom, thanks for your interest. Please email me at taharka2@gmail.com. I will send you a link to our team's forum on Thursday.

Avee, you're right. We shouldn't spend six months on the pre-production stage. Also, I do have some design ideas. I'll address your comments in the original post.
Murray, the team hasn't decided whether the game will be developed with RPG Maker or not. However, I think we'll consider using RPG Maker.
Arcan, I have failed to complete a game. I didn't just write a design document for a Starcraft 2 mod. I spent about a year developing the mod with the Starcraft 2 Map Editor. I recently abandoned the project because (1) I thought the game wouldn't be fun to play, and (2) the game was too ambitious and my programming skills weren't good enough.
Irili, thanks for the advice. I will encourage my teammates to start small. That was the mistake I made with my first project. On the other hand, I also want the team to develop an RPG that the average gamer will want to play.

(Edited)
Like I said earlier, I'm looking to work with other people. I'm not looking to formally lead a team.
I don't have any fixed ideas coming into this project. I'm interested in hearing other people's ideas and sharing my own. I'm willing to accept other people's ideas if they're good. And who knows, perhaps other people will also be willing to accept my good ideas.
Just to update you guys, the team has grown from one to two people. It would be nice if we could be joined by one or two more people.

Thanks for your feedback, Max. I incorporated some of your suggestions in my revised post.
I'd also like to ask that people don't post discouraging remarks here. I'm working to build a team and a game. If you don't have anything constructive to say, then please don't say anything. Thank you.

Oops. Good question. No the positions aren't paid. I apologize if I gave that impression. However, I'm hoping that the RPG that will be worked on will become a portfolio piece for me and my teammates. And who knows... the game might make money some day. Hey, I can dream, right?

Update (11/30/2011)
The team will temporarily stop recruiting new members. The team has grown to four people. No one has committed to the project yet, so we may recruit new members in the near future. Over the next week, we will decide whether or not we should recruit new members. If you are interested in joining the team, I'd like to get your contact information. Please email me at taharka2@gmail.com.
Pitch
Hello. I'm looking to work on an RPG with three other people. My goal is for my teammates and I to spend at least two months working on "pre-production" tasks for an RPG. Pre-production tasks include brainstorming ideas, sharing ideas on a team forum, creating a design document (a blueprint for the game), writing a script and creating concept artwork. Once the pre-production stage is complete, the team will decide whether the game should be created or not, and how to move forward.
I consider myself to be a rookie game designer. My game design experience includes creating a design document for a Starcraft 2 mod. I'm looking to recruit 3 people to be my teammates. My teammates should:
- have a passion for RPGs
- have a passion for game design, writing or art
- and be willing to commit at least 5 hours a week to the project
It is not necessary for my teammates to have previous experience (although any experience is appreciated). I'm primarily looking for people who will demonstrate passion and commitment.
I have multiple goals for the project. The "lowest" goal is that the pre-production work serves as a portfolio piece for my teammates and I. The "highest" goal is that the team actually creates the RPG, and that the RPG receives positive reviews. I'm also hoping that my teammates and I gain valuable experience that will help us in our video game development careers.
Please email taharka2@gmail.com if you're interested in working with me. Thank you.
