I'm not a reader, but I want to learn to write for video games

author=hedge1
EDIT: I just realized there was probably a reason why you asked this question in the first place. Did someone tell you that you needed to read more? Are you upset at the quality of your writing and trying to figure out how to improve? Is it something you just "feel you should do"? I know Anime and comics have been the inspiration from some games. Is there a reason you feel those aren't sufficient for your needs? Are you really asking us what you should be reading to get better?

No one has said anything to me, because I've never fully written something and any writing I have done no one has ever seen. But I can tell the quality of my own work. I've been working very hard on game mechanics, programming and game design, but it's all gonna be worthless if I can't even put together a half-way coherent story.
My issue right now is that the game is a Character Action RPG where the main character is solo most of the plot. My biggest issue before even beginning with the plot, is finding a feasible reason on why she tackles these tasks on her own.

Your advice is amazing though, thanks a lot. Everyone's been really helpful in this thread.

Thanks a lot guys, lots of useful tips and resources.

There are still a lot of differences, especially with regards to how information is presented, because the audience is the player and you need to make sure they focus on what to do next. As an obvious example, if you have a scene talking about a location, the player is pretty likely to misunderstand the scene as the game directing them to go to that location. Or if you spend too much time telling the player about information that isn't relevant to the gameplay, they'll get frustrated and bored. So, in video games, you have to be more careful about what kind of information you give and especially about when you give it, and time your story beats based on gameplay relevance rather than just aiming for good pacing.

This is one of the things I'm trying to avoid, I've always though the story should be built around the game play rather then vice versa.
The issue I'm having is thinking up a plot that can be stretched out into a games length organically, it's a lot more difficult then I initially thought.

If so how do you think one would go about doing so? Is it feasible? How would one go about improving in this field? I've never really been interested in books as a medium since I'm a very visual person, but I really want to write at least a decently engaging story for my game.

The Way EP 6

Anyone know what lun is up to these days? I know he worked on shadows of adam, but thats the last I've heard of things he's worked/working on.

Would be nice to get some sort of sequel or new story from him.

[GM] [Paid] Looking for pixel artist for my (2D) Kingdom Hearts 2 style action rpg protoype

I'm currently in the process of developing an action rpg prototype in game maker and I've been in a slump when it comes to making the graphics and animation for it. I've managed to prototype a decent amount of the battle system, but sprite work/animations and frame data actually play a very big part in the feel of a battle system like this.

There will only be 2 directions (left and right) for the combat sections of the game which should save a lot of time (and hopefully some money heheh). The town sections however will have four direction facing sprites.

I'm looking for somewhat taller sprites similar in style to something like chrono trigger. The main thing I want is for them to be expressive.

These are the sprites I'll need to start off with

4 directional sprites
* Idle Sprites
* Walking Animation
* Running Animation

2 direction sprites
(Main Character uses a Sword)

- 3 Hit main combo -
* Slash animation
* Thrust animation (Character will slide forward during this hit)
* Sweep Strike (Similar to the combo finisher in kingdom hearts 1)

* Charged spin attack

* A Rolling Animation
* A Guarding Animation
* Item use sprite
* HitStun/Knockback Sprite

Here was my own attempt at making the sprite which you'll be able to use as a (shitty) reference. I don't want this to be altered/animatied though, I want a sprite newly made from scratch. Just use this as an example for her appearance/features. Which I will be willing to describe in further detail if needed.

Payment will work on a per animation/sprite basis, as in I'll request you to do an animation then pay you beforehand. Payments will be made in AUD since I'm from Australia however it should be easy to work out its value in your own currency.

PM me or post your portfolio and rate in this topic if you're interested. Prices will be negotiated. Don't expect massive prices however haha (e.g $20 for a 2 frame walking sprite in one direction).

You just need to write FullPackageFlag=1 in the ini file. I already made it playable without rtp haha.

Thanks mate really appreciate it.

Looking for cRaZy_gUy's Journey. It was a comedy game where you played as a pot with a pair of legs.

[RM2K] does anyone still have a copy of cRaZy_GuYs journey

I remember loving that game when I played it a really long time ago. Been feeling nostalgic for it but can’t find it anywhere. It’s a game where you control a pot with legs that tries to find out who scared a chicken.

Would greatly appreciate if someone could help me. Not sure if this is the right board to post it on.
