Version 29

Sweet mother of updates...! You went all out on this one didn't you Stephen? Good job!

The way I currently envision it, the trailer is set to James' "Kickstarter Theme" (again, it's awesome!) and then, throughout the campaign page, there'll be other clips and samples that'll have the ambient sound effects.

Did I tell you that we're working on a new tech demo in Unity for our custom formation battle-system?

That sounds interesting! Got any spoilers yet by any chance? Or are you going to reveal those alongside the Kickstarter?

I thought the flickers were too subtle haha. I may mute all of the footage in the Kickstarter video because our composer is working on a new Kickstarter Theme and it's pretty awesome.

I thought they were okay, and come to think of it, with music they might need a boost in volume to keep the ambiance from drowning (no pun intended). Now about the kickstarter, it might be better to not mute the game's SFX and balance it with the music. Do both and see which one is better.

Thyden Design and Animations Test

Real nice Stephen! I love the combination of rain and static flickers from the screens!

The sound effects are not bad, but you can lower the volume a bit to make the flickers more subtle.

Having said all of that, I haven't actually 'plugged it in' and tested it yet, so there may be significant issues to fix once I've explored this map in-game.

So it's still pretty fresh. Take it for a test drive then and you can update the blog with the new version.

Long time no speak fella!

One of the problems with this image is that the lack of a vanishing point's influence on perspective becomes far too noticeable when viewing a map all at once.

I've since added a few details that hopefully make things clearer and, though this is maybe a total cop-out, players won't visit this map until the full-game-version and by then we'll have arranged a 'moving diagonally up and down' type feature, so it can feature actual slopes rather than just simulated ones.

Yeah I figured that looking at it at once made it more noticeable but I thought that it was still worthwhile to take a look at it so I mentioned it anyway! But if you're going to add diagonal movement, then maybe it won't be as bad if you can use actual slopes.

A New and Improved Thyden Harbour:

Hey Stephen, it's been a while! Just chiming in to see how you're doing! Good job on the redesign. Though the slope-like rows on the left and right sides look a bit disorienting.

If it's a constructed (as in, non-natural) downward slope, you can make it clearer, smoother and maybe add some shadows, signs or symbols to convey orientation a little better.

The way it is now, the rows look like both walls and levels and it's a bit odd! You can search for pictures of cliff towns and areas similar to Thyden, to gain some perspective and ideas on how to design it.

Single whammy:

I do try - although, it's weird that I don't notice obvious things until they're pointed out. Should be a simple case of reorganising the animation sequence this time.

Yeah I figured that you just made an error with the order or something like that. Glad to hear that it can be fixed easily!

Single whammy:

Way better than the last one! But are there 2 identical frames at the end of the loop? I think it switches between the identical ones at the end.

But still, way to go man! Your willingness to work on these details is commendable!

Double whammy:

Creating 4 more frames should, in theory, be do-able. I tried making them run 1,2,3,4 then 4,3,2,1, but it just looked like the flames were moving in reverse.

Yes, all in all you're right, there's a kind of 'jump' that needs sorting.

Yeah I thought that the reverse wouldn't work 'cause the flames move outwards so the smooth loop idea is the best solution.

Having the flames rise simultaneously on top of each other (like water ripples, waves or smoke particles to give you an idea of how it works) would mean that it will be a closed loop that repeats itself.

Try something like that to fix the animation without too much trouble.

You can add some particles for eye candy later on but the base needs to look good first.
