Is the "what are you thinking about" thread really locked just because LockeZ has a different opinion to other people? Would people really prefer a community where everyone agrees with one another 100% of the time? What is the matter with you, darlings?

Agreed 100%

I've been feeling all the people who think this community is toxic are the ones who are making it toxic
I'd like to think it was locked because of the way people reacted to LockeZ's opinion.

Either way, I'm inclined to agree with you, sated.
As long as the thread is restarted, it's probably permissible in this case. That topic has been notorious for being pretty volatile/toxic/mean-spirited etc for a long time now.

The main problem with the WELP forum is that RMN's rules (and decency in general) tends to go out the window - and then those attitudes spill into other parts of the site. People on RMN shouldn't necessarily be in fear of the staff, but they should feel that their posts have consequences.

But yeah, in this case, it could go either way. LockeZ has said much worse in the past tbh.

Even then I don't think you need to shut down the whole thread. All you need to do is warn ESBY and have done with it.
BAN ESBY

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

The main person who was reacting to my opinion was the moderator who closed the thread.
@LockeZ You don't know who closed the thread. Mistakes happen though, I wouldn't hold it against him.

@ESBY BANNE EVERYONE

I think the purpose of closing the thread is to give people time to chill out on a topic. It's not a terrible irrevocable seizing of your right to an opinion in this case. Although I wish they'd warn people more often instead of close threads, yeah.

I've previously been warned for calling someone a "fucking idiot", which is exactly what you did. If the moderators are going to be even-handed, then you should also be warned (not banned). Simple logic.
i mean, i technically didn't break any of the forum rules so me receiving a warning would be unfair

I didn't close the thread, I don't know who did, or why. I'm working on that angle now.

I don't believe that a dissenting, or even a disgusting opinion is a good reason to censor or cease the conversation entirely.

I'm working on this situation.

The forums show a list of currently active users at the bottom, sorted by how recently they've opened or refreshed a page. The most recently active moderator in that list at the time when I noticed the thread was locked was Feld. But Sated was at the very end of the list so I guess there's a chance he was the one who locked it?

I should point out I don't actually mind that the thread was closed, if it gets people to shut up about the topic. I was just trying to have a small discussion about possible ways to interpret the video, since Corfaisus had brought it up and seemed to be fishing for a response. And talking about how to interpret the video seemed to me to be a much more apolitical topic than talking about the implications of any given interpretation. I thought that was extremely unlikely to get anybody angry, since it's just talking about what's going on in one celebrity's head instead of talking about any larger issues. Obviously I was wrong, though, and once people started getting angry anyway, I do agree that the discussion probably needed to stop. A post saying "let's move on from this topic" plus a cat video probably would've sufficed, but locking the topic for a couple hours works too I guess.
LockeZ, I'll be the first to tell you that while your knowledge of game mechanics is very well rounded and you do actually bring a lot of depth into a conversation, you (and other people) say some off the wall shit that I imagine is only permissible because this is the internet. I mean, damn. You'd get popped in the face for saying some of the shit you do in real life, honestly.

But on the other hand I don't believe in censoring or stifling the conversation. I'd rather someone who says some dumb shit get chastised for saying dumb shit than the person(s) being unable to say it at all.

With that being said, RMN is having some issues with its community right now (which we're working on), but I think we can afford to put things in perspective a bit; RMN is not that bad. I'd wager to say it's pretty fucking great here; the game making (which is what this site is about, mind you) is thriving, people actually do make friends here, this is one of the most reliable and consistent avenues of game mechanic discussion on the web (seriously, a topic about game mechanics is almost assured to go at least three pages), and generally, people are friendly here.

That's not to say there aren't problems (namely, complacently in both the userbase and the leadership in some ways), and yes, there are some knots that we're working through, but to think that RMN is some horrible, chaotic place? Yeah, I think that's bullshit that's easily dispelled once you visit, well...almost anywhere else on the internet, really. Pound for pound, RMN is quite easily one of the friendliest and open communities I've ever visited for anything.

We got issues. I'm trying my best to get us to work on them. But let's keep our perspective here.

Wait, Sated, you're not even colored green, how did I mess that one up? I've already lost interest in figuring this riddle out. A mystery that will be lost to the ages. In a thousand years the ruins of RMN will be unearthed and someone will discover the answer via a series of block puzzles.

@Feld: I don't remember ever saying any off the wall shit like that but definitely warn me if I do. I really do try to treat these conversations just like I would if they were happening in person. If I'm failing at that, I'd like to know when so I can work on it.

CLARIFICATION: This isn't to say that toxic members won't be banned.
@Feld I think your post earlier about sums up my thoughts on the subject. Where's the like button when you need it??
