Filesize and Expansion Packs

I think expansion packs or downloadable content are great ideas if they're employed properly. Of course the actual base release would have to be worth it first.

Thoughts on the Number of Skills/Spells per character.

This topic is so relevant for me right now since I'm reworking the skills of all my characters (since I've added three party members things need to be rebalanced). My skill system lets the characters learn a wide pool of abilities but only lets a certain number be active at any one time.

Personally I've tried to stray away from the "Fire 1, 2 ,3" concept entirely. There is an option to upgrade Fireball to a more powerful version, but otherwise you only get the one spell. My reason for this is that I'm gauging that the spell damage would increase as the caster's Int/Wis/Mag stat increases.

Discussion - Adventure game styled puzzles!

First of all I'd just like to say that I'd think it would be a shame if these forums were limited to the design of RPGs alone. It's "Game Design & Theory" not "RPG Design etc" and there are many games outside the RPG genre that are developed within this community, despite its namesake.

Anyway, puzzles in adventure games like the one listed above (I remember playing a few called Space Quest or something as a kid) are often very simple - find an obstacle, find an item or person that allows you to clear the obstacle and then progress. That got me thinking, especially with your example of the fishing rod.

What do you guys think about puzzles like above with multiple solutions? Why couldn't you use EITHER the fishing rod or the chewing gum. Maybe the game could contain a few ways to beat each puzzle, with the player receiving some kind of bonus for taking the more creative, more difficult options?

I can't help but bring the game Scribblenauts for DS into the limelight here, because while it is very different from an adventure game, the puzzles all have multiple solutions and it may give you guys something to think about?

Challenge versus Frustration

There's a simple answer to this question...

If it's going to frustrate the player to the point where they no longer enjoy playing and will turn it off... it should be edited or done away with.

Okay.

Where's the threshold? Who's the arbiter?

The players are. That's what demos and beta versions can help with. Sure you want to show off your project, but make sure there are avenues for interested players to leave feedback so that balancing issues can be fixed as well as bugs and compliments to blow up your e-peens.

Sheep Man was stolen from Pokemon.

PS: Is it an Electric Sheep Man, an Electric Man Sheep or a Sheep Electric Man?

Intentionally Bad Games.

Intentionally bad games are worthless and stupid. A satirical or comedic game does not have to be intentionally downgraded on standards to be funny or make its point. In my opinion they should have just as much effort put into them as anything else.
