New to VX ACE and just wanted....

I was checking the demo of the ring of udrai And I was checking some of the text of the characters talking , and the male character says,
So this is \cAria\c, huh?

is this script ? why would you need to use script for talking ?

Also when the ship is sailing and docks in the upper left side of the screen the words WORLD MAP appear but I can't find the Event the shows it.

I know I sound very nooby.

so for the text thing, there is a series of text commands that let you change the color of the text and any pauses you want between words and such. its like forum code to change things to italics and whatnot.

the text on the top is a thing in the map screen. when you have the map settings screen it'll have the map's name on the top left and underneath it is a display name that you can change that will show when the player enters the map

its all explained in the pdf, just keep going through

New to VX ACE and just wanted....

there are some fantastic build-along tutorials, but they all cover the same stuff. I personally enjoyed this one.

all in all, make sure that your first project is not overambitious. maybe make one town, one dungeon, and only a few other areas. Keep it simple, your goal is to learn the engine. your magnum opus can wait.

Worldbuilding to fit Characters, or Characters to fit the rest of the World?

I design the world first, and then think of characters to fit in that setting. That being said, I'll often have character types that I want to have present before I start making the world so that will influence the worldbuilding.

Also I need to think of world explanations for why the characters can do what they do, cause if those aren't there I think I'd self destruct.

(i swear i make things, they just aren't screenshot-able yet.)

[RMVX ACE] New to RPG Maker, help me do stuff

there are a few build along tutorials that are fantastic, this is one that I found very helpful:

http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/topic/1249-beginnergeneral-beginners-guide-to-rpg-maker-vx-ace/

basically you just download it, follow the pdf, and it'll really help with everything you need to get a general overview of the game. I love it.

Which direction to head with battle system

do you already know what roles your characters will take? you could mess around with giving them each unique mechanics to make them feel like different people and fighting in different ways.

Design a world around a character or design a character around a world

Well changing the hair animation is the easiest solution, but you raise an interesting question. Normally I think that characters are built alongside the world so you don't have this problem happen very often.

I think it depends on what idea you want to emphasize. Is your character an outsider to your setting, and thus needs to adapt and change what they do? or are they just a transplant of old assets, and who they are now should actually fit the world, story-wise? If your character and your world have visibly different graphical styles, then you can mess around with that in the story.

I don't know what you should do, but I think the question is really interesting.

[RMVX ACE] Removing an event

is the erase event command just at the end of your event block? you can get around the event respawning by setting a self switch and putting the erase event command on the next tab.

If you're new to rpgmaker I would highly reccommend doing one of the build-along tutorials. This one has been fantastic for me.

Hello hello!

I realized I never really introduced myself. I'm Spej, I'm an illustration student at my school. So far the only rpg maker project Ive finished is one of those build-along tutorials, which was really helpful.

Fave rpgs and influences include Final fantasy 9 (then the rest), Mother 3, Persona 4, then the rest of the smt ones. Basically my favorite studios are Atlus, Platinum Games, and then squaresoft circa 2000.

Nice to meet you!

What are you thinking about right now?

new yu gi oh banlist ruined my deck, but I suppose that's the point of banlists. sigh.

WIP Thread (NON-GAME ONLY)

man, you all make me jealous. your pixelling skills are all really great! I just got my character concept art to show.

Coming up with good characters is pretty hard, but its pretty fun too. I plan for the fat lion and the girl scientist to be PCs in my project, and the pack rat is a recurring npc as of now.
