Description

Welcome to the fourth installment of the beloved community puzzle game: Befuddle Quest 4 Dead Using a specific product, RPG Maker 2003, we will each make a single map puzzle using RTP OR your own supplied graphics (that mesh with RTP) and I will link them together in a quest. Why RM2k3? Because it's accessible to the majority of people and because it's pretty easy to link maps together using it. Plus, I'm running the show and that's what I use (because I'm old). Also, that's what we used last time and it worked out okay.

For those of you new to the BQ scene, check out this game: http://rpgmaker.net/games/1101/Befuddle_Quest/

STORY ::..
When we last left Zack and Broomhilda, they had absconded with the late Duke Drake the Rake's airship and were sailing off into the sunset. Now happily married, the happy couple went on a happy vacation to a happy little island...or so they thought!

Zack's and Broomhilda's honeymoon on an island turn out to be....AN ISLAND OF ZOMBIES! Of course, Broomhilda is wisked away by evil zombies and now Zack, stranded and lost on the island, must make his way through the perilous perils of the mysterious island to save her! Zack's puzzle solving skills will be put to the test (yet again)!

SUBMISSION ::..
Before the deadline, zip or rar up your project, upload it somewhere (say, your locker!) and send me a link to the file (either in a PM or here in this event). Make as many puzzles as you like. Multiple submissions are allowed (and encouraged!).

Please include with your submission:
  • The RM2k3 project
  • The coordinates of the ENTRANCE and EXIT points on the map
  • Puzzle name
  • A brief description of the puzzle
  • A detailed walkthrough (in a PM, or a text file in the submission folder)
  • Puzzle difficulty
  • Any special notes or issues you think I need to know to link the map into the game

I'm not opposed to using extra music, sounds, pictures, chipsets or charsets, as long as it fits with RTP (and they're included with the submission). If you have special tileset rules, let me know.

NOTES ::..
As before, this game will be about the puzzles, but feel free to take the story in bold new directions!

Also, feel free to use any variables or switches you like - I will reset them to 0/OFF between each puzzle.

Remember the deadline for your submission is February 1st, 2010 @ Midnight!

Silly question but, are there any special settings like the last one was about being in a tower? I know they went to their honeymoon, but still.
I've never used "recall to memorized position"... What's that supposed to do?

It's like teleport except that you get to define the mapID, X, and Y locations manually. Teleport, on the other hand, uses a mapID it sets upon the event's creation. However, the mapID in your project will NOT be the same as when I import it into the BQ4 master project meaning that I would have to go into your map and manually change every single teleport event.

Recall to memorized position is much better.

What you do is in an auto-start event use the Variable operations to save the Hero > Map ID and then whenever you want to teleport use Recall to Memorized Position using that variable and two other variables for X and Y (that you'd set yourself for the desired coordinates).

The setting is Zombie Island, but who knows what kinds of things will be found on this mysterious island? There could be caves or castles or strange futuristic spaceports for all we know!
How do you get the variables to mesh together from everyone's stuff?

Eh, not my job heeheehee ^^

I'm in.
I will reset them to 0/OFF between each puzzle.
Ow... Good thing you only have to create that once and paste it everywhere :3

Having a signature is too mainstream. I'm not part of your system!

im pretty sure there is a function to change variables/switches in groups
Yes - it's the Switch/Variable range option. It's literally 2 lines of code.
I thought they only had it for switches? Or something. It's been a while. All I know is arrays are a pain in RPG Maker.
My puzzle is currently a circus of switches and variables. Is this very bad..?
No. Working 2K3 is as much as a puzzle for the programmer as it is the player. Making a puzzle with a Turing Tarpit is half the fun (with the other half Playing a puzzle).
This sounds like fun. I'll see if I can whip something up in time for the deadline.

can't make a bad game if you don't finish any games

It occurs to me that I'd have to re-download 2k3 to do this and I'm not sure I want to do that!
I'm looking forward to Zombie Economy Sim (and it's 70% of the reason behind starting a BQ4. The other 30% is made up of wanting to use the new Event system on RMN and making my own tower defense puzzle).
I really have no idea what to do at this point, but I know a very destructive puzzle would be fun.
