Description

This has been a big year for the RPG Maker series, with the release of RPG Maker 2000 and RPG Maker 2003, as well as the news of RPG Maker MV coming in the future! As such, we've held a fair amount of RM-only events. But what about the other engines out there? There's a lot of them and with the recent Humble Bundle packs and new releases, they haven't seen much time in the spotlight in the site.

Thus, this time we're going to even the score - No RPG Maker event is a go!

Make a game during the month of October in an engine that is not part of the RPG Maker series.

- Make and release a project with-in the month of October, 2015.
- Only non-RM engines are allowed.
- No teams. (Though you can get people to help you, there's only a single prize and divvying it up would be quite difficult.)
- Only one per person.
- RM-clone engines are not allowed. It's a challenge people! Embrace it!
- You may release a demo or full game, but you an only win first prize with a full game. (Other prizes can be won with demos, though.)
- Games must have at least 10-20 minutes of game time.
- You cannot use an old game as a base, though you can certainly remake a game in a different engine. And pre-made resources are fine.
- Rips, edits, RTP and custom are all good.

All games must be submitted to the event page by the 31st of October, 11:59 GMT.

You may start brainstorming but nothing else until the 1st of October.

There will be NO extensions so plan your time wisely and make prayers to the Gods of Fate.

The First Place prize will be a 3D printed coin with the RMN logo on one side and your username on the other. The winner will also receive a badge and 80MS. Only a full game can win this prize.

2nd Place will receive a badge and 60MS.

3rd Place will receive a badge and 40MS.

All others will receive a badge and 25MS.

Placings will be picked by vote, but only votes by those who have been on the site before the competition started will count, so calling on tumblr or reddit to swing you to win won't work.

For those who don't recall (or know) we do have an engines page in case you've no idea where to start. You can also start checking out the different engines right away. Dive on in!

To sumbit:
Create a game page for your game, abiding by the rules of the site. It is highly recommended that you do this at least a few days before the end of the event!

Upload your game to the gamepage and then click the Submit button at the top of this page. From there you can choose the download you mean to submit.

This must all be done before the end date of the competition.

FAQ

Is RPG Toolkit taken as a clone engine?
I'm gonna go with yes and say 'Go challenge yourself, mate'. There's a lot of engines out there. We have a huge list of them on the engines page and a bunch of them are free.

Does it have to cooperate with Windows 7?
Make it compatible with at least Windows XP and 7. If people can't play your game they can't vote for it after all. Also, yes, PC Master race.

Will there be any theme or more guidelines given?
There might be additions to the guidelines depending on questions asked, though that will be more clarification. No theme.

So I can start working on ma gam right now?
Is it October yet? The start and end dates are shown in the top-right corner of the page, under the submit and management buttons. You can mess around to get used to an engine, but no actually making a start on your game. Brainstorming is fine, though. No concrete work!

Well honestly I do have an idea for a visual novel but I'm not sure if I can do it without an artist. Meh, screw it. I'm tots doing it!
Speaking of that, are we allowed to have artists?
Man, my school schedule and this camping trip I came back from have really put me far behind my game's development! X(

Thank goodness that Fall Break is almost here so that I can really get back into gear! :D
I've got windowstyles, font drawing, and audio playback working now.

Soon I'll be able to actually start making content =P
You know what, it's been 10 days already and I made 0% of progress in my entry. I have almost 50 Steam games in my library and I have many others that aren't from Steam.

So, it's really obvious that I won't be gamemaking on a while...

(That means that I'm out of this event.)

Thanks! :D
Uh, sorry Kory, but during October only. It already says no pre-existing games.

My game will be using MP3s since Stencyl doesn't seem to like anything else for flash player games.

Also HOORAY I didn't do JACK SHIT with my game this week. >_<

I happen to like MIDI.

However, my game will only be using Opus audio files :)

Man, it hurts when I see that other people already finished their entries when I have barely started mine... ;_;
I was having so much fun making the UI that I forgot to write a story xD So I'm on the same boat as you here, Ilan.

Oh well, we still have 21 days left, so we should be able to finish them by that point, right?

...RIGHT!? XD

I am submitting game page now.

I read the properties of my game folder. I created my game on September 15. So my goal is to submit the download prior to October 15. I don't know if I qualify for the prizes, but the game was still created in under a month.

It will be up to the RMN gods to determine if I had an unfair advantage or not.

Really? I find midi's rather cute and nostalgic. I quite like them, even if the sound quality is a bit less. I think for a short game using midis should be fine.

That certainly looks interesting. Can't wait to see it in action actually.

After some consideration, i decided to change my music format from MIDI to ogg.
I was kinda bummed by doing this because i wanted to use midi, but after some browsing in the forums i realized most people have an irrational hatred towards MIDI and i don't want my game to get points deducted from it just because i used that format.

I wasted another valuable day replacing midi instruments with the best quality soundfonts i could find and exporting to .ogg, importing an extension in game maker that allowed me to actually use the oggs and replace all the events i had made that dealed with midi music with codes for handling the oggs.

Most of the audio system is finished though, so at least that's that.

Screenshot? I'm curious. :P

I don't like the look of those shadows, but it's still an early build.

Who wants to play test a short Ren'Py game, can PM me.

Should look for

+Spelling mistakes (copy and pasted the whole script into Word, but may have missed some.)

+Make sure characters speaking has correct name at top.

+Make sure images have been disposed. (shouldn't see 2 similar sprites overlapping.)

+Multiple platforming test appreciated. All builds included.

+General thoughts and suggestions (ie. Something that could be implemented in less than 2 hours.)

+Game is not encrypted. So you could like totally steal my ideas for this event.

I spent today's free time composing the songs for level 1 and 2. I wanted to compose the game over music too but i'm too tired.

I love midi. Even if it's a format almost no one uses anymore it is one of my favorites to compose. You don't need to worry about having the right instruments, or a wide selection of good quality vsts or soundfonts, you have the same instruments at all times and you just have to pick the ones you like and go nuts.

Oooh that sounds good piano! Thankfully a lot of stuff you can do in unreal with blueprint so the scripting that way isn't to tricky.

You know, I was screwing with Unity for 2 days getting used to the editor and 5 days actually trying to make something I could use as a base for my event game, and I couldn't even get a working player character on the screen using Unity's education resources. I thought maybe I probably wouldn't even have anything decent in a month using Unreal, even though it was easier to learn. But you know, after three days (one of which I mostly putzed around) with Unreal Engine 4 and their resources, I've already got a working maze platformer, and if I wanted to, could decide just to leave the game as it is, finish the level, and submit it in a couple of days as is (I'm not going to submit something with so little work into it, although I just might leave it as a maze runner).

I ended up squishing all the screens into this single menu screen.

I should really get around to writing that 'story' thing rather than spending my time messing with the UI xD

I was going to make something in IG Maker to blow you all away and take a small break in free time i had but as soon as I opening it my computer screamed in agony and crashed the program. I hope everyone's projects are going well though!

Okay, since my game is being done in Unreal Engine and I'm in the process of learning, everything's going to be bland basic. I mean, basic polygons for buildings, and the basic character mannequins for the characters. The only thing I'll likely put any real work into the is the main character.
