Description

Are you a fan of videogame music? Perhaps specifically a big fan of RPG music? Then I suggest reading on!

This event is mainly aimed at the composers of RMN (at least to participate in the event as competitors) but even if you don't compose music yourself, you are welcomed and encouraged to participate by listening to the submissions and voting for a winner!

Now, if you're a composer yourself: have you tried your hand at composing music for RPGs before? Yes? Great! Participate and test your skills against the other composers of RMN in this friendly competition. Even if you don't have much experience composing music for RPGs you're more than welcome to, and encouraged to join in and in the process get some practice under your belt! (none of us is perfect, anyway.)

- The event is divided into 3 phases, each of which require a separate submission per participant.

- Each phase = one musical piece. Each phase has its own set of rules with regard to instrumentation and theme. The theme is announced by a neutral party at the beginning of each phase.

- Contestants will send the submissions to an appointed neutral RMN member in a PM and after the phase in question is over, the submissions will be posted anonymously, so that people can listen to them and vote for what they think sounds the best and fits best the given description and theme of the phase. (Please send your submissions privately via PM to kentona)

- Votes will be counted and published at end of each phase. The person to receive the most votes from all three phases wins.

- Each phase lasts approximately 2 weeks, so that even the busiest people will have a chance of finishing their pieces in time (hopefully.)

Phase 1: Simple
Simple is beautiful. You're required to create a piece matching the description of the theme using no more than 3 instruments (also means 3 layers/tracks). How well can you bring your instruments to life?
Starts 12/25/2011 06:00 PM
Ends 01/09/2012 05:59 PM

Phase 2: Orchestral
Orchestral music isn't a necessity for an RPG but it is very common in the genre and it is a good skill to be able to compose a piece that can be played by an orchestra.

How well can you harmonize multiple voices of different instruments?

The piece you create for the theme of phase 2 doesn't have to follow the professional principles of orchestration, but it's supposed to revolve around orchestral elements and utilize strings, brass and woodwind sections. Not necessarily all of them (though, variety in orchestration is encouraged), but it needs to have orchestral sections, instead of single instruments playing all the tracks.

There can be additional instruments, though modern orchestras already cover a lot of instruments these days. The focus of the theme should still be in orchestration, however.
Starts 01/11/2011 14:00 PM
Ends 01/25/2012 05:59 PM

Phase 3: Inspired
All of us have our own strengths and sometimes when moving out of the comfort zone we don't get to use them as well as we'd like.

In this phase you're free to use any kind of instrumentation and sources of sounds you wish.

If you felt you didn't get to do your own thing in the earlier phases, this is where you can go all-out, any way you please. Though the piece will still need to match the theme of the phase.
Starts 01/30/2011 16:00 PM
Ends 02/13/2012 05:59 PM

- Each piece needs to loop and the song has to last at least 1 minute before the loop point. Phase 2 and 3 pieces may need to last longer than 1 minute before the loop point. (If you're doing a rondo the loop point is naturally when you're repeating the entire cycle of sections)

- You have to demonstrate the loop point by including it in the song by inserting one or two sections that would follow it. If you have a separate intro in your song, your loop point could return the listener to the section following the intro, for example.

- It would be nice if you kept your track private until the voting is done so we'd get a fair competition.

- Audio formats accepted:
.wav
.mp3
.mid
I'd even say .flac and .ogg, but people need to be able to access your piece, so it would be best to go with the three mentioned above.

I hope I'm not asking too much from people with 3 songs. If you think 2 weeks per piece isn't enough time, let me know so we can arrange something else. The reason I thought 3 phases would be the best idea to go with is because people here have varying strengths, so with this it should stay fair and challenging to everyone.

I hope for lots of participants and followers! :)

Link, no offense, I was hoping to hear from those who organized the event, and only from those who organized the event.

No offense harmonic, but the rule is stated pretty clearly in the first post

Phase 1: Simple
Simple is beautiful. You're required to create a piece matching the description of the theme using no more than 3 instruments (also means 3 layers/tracks). How well can you bring your instruments to life?

This says 3 instruments, so it means 3 physical instruments. 3 layers and 3 tracks are mentioned because flute for example is only one instrument, but it doesn't mean you could have 10 flute tracks. The bits in the brackets are only extra details for the rules.

Drumkits are more complicated, because for example in an orchestra one person can play multiple different percussion elements which are all different instruments, but still possibly can be found from the same kit in the soundfont as timpani, basic drums and etc.

So the confusing and vague part is probably how to define the amount of percussion. However, I recommend to use common sense if you decide to use the percussion kits. Don't go overboard with the amount of the stuff there. Timpani would count as one instrument, as well as congas, a basic drumkit, xylophone, etc.

Wait, as long as 3 people can play the music? So that means I can't, for example, use an instrument to play 4 different tunes at the same time in order to harmonize them??

If you would have one track playing 4 different tunes that aren't possible to be played by an one instrument, then it would count as more than one instrument.

Generally I think Tarranon and Link answered your questions pretty well. I see no problem with Link being helpful, especially if you don't want to wait for my response, which can sometimes take a long time because of the different time zones.

To summarize the idea of the first phase again, I'm just going to quote what Tarranon said:

author=Tarranon
Sometimes less is more, and being able to compose well utilizing only a handful of instruments is an important lesson in understanding the voicing of the instruments you choose. Can you mix an oboe with a trumpet? How about a flute with a piano? Knowing how the timbre of this-or-that instrument works with other instruments is fundamental when you go to compose larger orchestral arrangements.

So in answer to your question, I would say that a legato strings ensemble would be entirely out of the question. Unless, of course, you wanted to use your three instruments as three solo violins, which would be kind of pointless. One violin; one piano; one flute. Or two french horns and a tuba. However you want to arrange it, the only limiting factor here is that the song has to be made using three solo instruments.

(That means that you can't have a brass ensemble patched through your keyboard and have it count as "one" instrument).

Where can I submit my finished track?
I have tried the submit from the submit button, but it goes straightly beside my name. Is that the right way to submit?
Please confirm it.

Thanks...

This is something that needs answer from kentona. The christmas holidays can mess stuff up a bit and make people busy, so bear with us. The first deadline is still many days ahead, so I'm sure you'll get confirmation on this in time.

What if I wanted to have a voice type instrument but the only soundfont I have is called "Choir Ahs?" I'm not even harmonizing that track. Would that be ok?
I don't see a problem here if the entire choir submits to the same voice and there is no harmonization.

All in all, let's try to have some fun with this too. For people whose style is more orchestral, you're better off with orchestral ensembles and percussion in the second and third phases probably. The first phase is mostly about solo instruments.

@sameric,happy,chana:
Thank you very much for your explanation, may be I'll wait for Kentona's reply. I'll prepare my piece in a private place before I give to someone that have been appointed.

@sameric (specially):
Yoi, udah rampung, mumpung libur n mumpung dah dapet ide dari Mochi hwkwkwkwk
plus lagi banyak orderan musik ni, jadinya ya cepet deh, oya setahu saya Rhyme bukannya yang nentuin tema?

Thanks...
@Mr. Lao
Arr, too fast hahahaha.
And yes, Rhyme is the one who decides the theme.

By the way,

So does that means we can use pre-harmonized Synth Strings or String Ensemble? Thank you.

How do I enter that lava temple ?
There's no way in. It's nearly impossible without any superpower.
Man, all the questions and discussion - I'm getting all confused. ;___;

Can we just call it three different instruments (like a drum kit, flute, piano), remember that we're all probably using electronic soundfonts and midi voices, what have you and could theoretically play it all on a keyboard, like a piano piece, and then limit it to a max of three layers going at any one time?

It's pretty grey as to how you'd stretch three parts between three people (I mean, you could have three guys on insane amounts of drums all singing at the same time, making for 6 layers and blah blah blah).
yeah, i'd probably justify it as 'anything that could theoretically be assigned a MIDI voice'

I did, but I'm asking for clarification to make sure I'm understanding it correctly. I'd rather not be disqualified because I was silly and misunderstood the rules! xD

hi. this discussion is about defining an instrument in terms of the brief. please reread
On MIDI format, is it considered as using 2 instrument when you use 2 tracks of a same instrument to create some effects such as reverb or echo? Of course the notes of both tracks will be same.

Thanks for the answers, Rei. I would just like to point out that multiple people wanted clarification on the same matter. We wanted an answer from those who are in charge of this event, which is why I didn't want to go off Link's answers. No one wants to get dinged on a technicality. No reason to take a slightly adversarial stance on the subject, as it warranted a bit of genuine discussion. It is a bit silly to expect unbridled creativity while simultaneously discouraging questions about what's possible within the ruleset.

If you need clarification on what I mean by 3 instruments, I mean 3 solo instruments. If we allow ensembles per track or layer, it's far from simplicity.

I'm pretty sure most of you do understand what simple means, right? Isn't it simple?...

If we allowed anything that could be assigned as midi voice and limit it to 3 tracks only, it would still allow usage of multiple voices per track, so no can do.

That's fine, because it's to create a reverb.
okay, i'll use three synthesisers then. glad i've got access to all the voices in the world
One way of saying it is also "If you think you might be breaking the rules, you probably are and should reel it in"

The rules are only unclear when you're trying to break the spirit of the phase.
