Description

Summoner of Sounds is designed to be a series of interactive community events where video game music will be celebrated by the means of craftsmanship and community interaction.

Community members with experience in music production will be dared to participate in challenges testing their ability to perform well as a versatile video game composer, while the game developers with other areas of expertise are encouraged to to analyze the challenges, and provide the composers with commentary, feedback and constructive criticism.

Summoner of Sounds consists of a periodically recurring series of challenges presented to the composers to participate in and for the developers and audience to engage in throughout the year.

Participants aren't obligated to participate in every challenge, but the more challenges you participate in, the greater the reward.

Presented challenges will test the composers' abilities to perform well as versatile video game music producers in a changing environment. Each challenge will introduce a different set of rules and restrictions, and a new concept where the composers will have to find a way to express themselves in.

The challenges may restrict and determine the video game genre that will need to be composed for, the game world setting to be composed for, a specific game instance to be composed for, or a specific manner to be composed in.

While the challenges will present a number of restricted aspects, each challenge will offer choice of freedom and room to stretch around in some of them.

Summoner of Sounds will be running for several months in total and challenges will be issued roughly once every month, or on a similar pacing.

Each challenge of the series will run approximately over the course of one month and the deadline of each challenge will be stated as the challenge and its ruleset are announced.

Any work submitted to this event will be disseminated under a creative commons license as publicly usable in any way the end-user wishes as long as they attribute the work to the artist in their credits and that they also do the same themselves with any derivative work based on the artist's.

End-users of this material, and any derivative material, will not, however, be able to legally make any money from anything containing these tracks without the artists' express permission.

All works submitted to the event have to be 100% original work of the participants and must contain no copyrighted material, either compositionally or in terms of sampled sounds. Submitted works must contain no arrangements of any material of a different author, and they can not lift motifs from anywhere else, except possibly from the participant's own works.

Submissions should contain as little audio quality loss as possible, WAV file format being heavily preferred.

The RPG Maker Network offers an extensive network of gamers and game developers, both hobbyists and professionals.

This event series is designed to help the composers of the game development community come together, challenge their know-how and showcase their creative efforts, and the rest of the community to come in contact with the composers.

This event series won't have a panel of judges, and there won't be hand-picked winners. Participants are encouraged to challenge themselves and work together towards solving the presented challenges.

During the course of the event series, the composers will be creating video game music in various forms and manners, and build themselves a diverse portfolio while doing so.

The rest of the community is encouraged to provide feedback and impressions on this material and to be in touch with the composers, possibly giving them ideas, or request something specific from within the given ruleset.

RMN will bring the participants visibility, and the yields of each challenge will be shared on RMN's social media during the course of the events.

Each composer has a completely optional step to sign up for post-processing their submitted material.

In the post-process, the composer will be in touch with the event organizer who will help them personally by offering them feedback on composition and mixing details and assist them by creating alternate, OGG file format versions of their tracks with a coded-in looping point, which will enable seamless looping of their songs in the RPG Maker VX and RPG Maker VX Ace engines.

Enabling looping for the songs requires them to be composed in looped structure, with recurring sections.

Summoner of Sounds as an event series will present a series of challenges that will test your abilities as a composer to express yourself in a wide variety of restricted environments. This will help in readying you to have the tools and confidence to perform well as a composer in a wide range of video game projects.

Each challenge will introduce a different scenario where you may need to compose music for different game genre, imply a different game setting through instrumentation, cultural, and musical genre references, or approach the the task by expressing yourself with a very specific perspective in mind.

Some of these scenarios may, and most likely will, require you to research and learn new ways of designing video game music, but they will also encourage you to test yourself, and express yourself in ways that you haven't before, and you will experience the joy of discovering new sides of your creative self.

Summoner of Sounds is an event series that will be running for several consecutive months. It may sound intimidating at first, but you can decide which challenges you want to participate in. However, the more challenges you undertake, the greater the rewards.

If you want to achieve the very best yields, then the series will also test your ability to perform under pressure as you'll need to be undertaking all the challenges.

It will test your ability to practice your trade under discipline, not only when you are motivated, and it will test your adaptability at the times when you'll have to find your creative freedom and inspiration while you still have to make your visions meet with a set of pre-existing rules.

Remember, you are not alone! This is a collaboration event. You may work alone if you wish, but you are allowed, and encouraged to collaborate with other members. Do you have the same Digital Audio Workstation as the other participant? You can work together! And if you feel like discussing how to approach any of the issued challenges with the other participants, then nothing stops you.

Building an extensive network of colleagues and other practitioners of your trade will also work greatly in your favor!

Will you be able to take on the challenge? Can you become the Summoner of Sounds, or even something more?

Introduce yourself at the Composer Introductions!

Video game composers wouldn't be composing music for video games if there were no video games, and video games with no music, or audio, would offer us only an experience with half of the things to sense, than what they do with audio, so let's agree that sound design is an integral part of game design.

Video game audio does not only offer us audio clues on game mechanics, but music activates large parts of our brain on fast rate and communicates us a great variety of information, which married with the visual material will bring the gaming experience to a whole new potency.

That being said, video game directors should not underestimate the importance of solid audio design, and advanced communication with the audio designers plays a major factor at what the end product will communicate to the consumer.

Music helps to communicate ideas which aren't visually present, it may also underline and empower the visual ideas present, or it may change the way we perceive the visual clues completely when the marriage of the visuals and the sound refers to a completely new impression than what either part of the combination would carry across alone.

Video game directors need to be able to communicate their vision to the sound designers and together with them, find a way to communicate this idea to the consumers.

While the Summoner of Sounds challenges will introduce composers to predetermined rulesets, the rest of the community may still engage in the process by discussing each challenge and the methods fit to completing the challenge.

Everyone can take the role of a critic. You don't need to be educated in music theory or terminology to be able to tell whether you find a musical piece fitting for a specific game genre, instance or setting. Communication matters, even if you don’t have the most optimal tools for it.

Express yourself with your own words and impressions. A composer will be glad to hear any of it. Tell the composer what their music communicates to you: feelings, impressions, visual images or atmosphere, for example. Does their track fit the description of the given ruleset?

Everyone may also post ideas of any themes they would like to hear. If the ruleset permits, a composer may very well decide to compose your idea.

While there isn't a panel of judges, or winners for the event, everyone is still encouraged to show appreciation for entries submitted to the event.

Simple feedback and commentary alone is welcome enough, but if you really like some track, give it a star to mark it as your favorite! You can give stars for multiple tracks if you wish. Stars play a part in event visibility and achievement mechanics.

To reward composers with stars post a reply to the event explaining which track, or tracks you want to give favorites for. Attaching a star image to the post helps the process.

As of today, one of the biggest, if not the single biggest achievement of the composer community of rpgmaker.net still is the release of our RMN Music Pack!

It's a great quality pack of music that we can be proud of, and an achievement that we were able to put together with collaborative effort and all thanks to the network and community that RMN is.

Reception of the RMN Music Pack was overwhelmingly positive and it has been a good while since its release, so it is time we set our sights on the future, and to the release of its successor, the RMN Music Pack 2!

The journey for RMN Music Pack 2 begins with Summoner of Sounds.

Summoner of Sounds is designed to work as a count down and prepare us to bring RMN Music Pack 2 to a whole new level.

While Summoner of Sounds works also as the countdown for the RMN Music Pack 2, Summoner of Sounds will still be the greatest undertaking of the RMN composer community as of today and it will challenge everyone's creative abilities.

Summoner of Sounds will be creating composers a portfolio, but it will also be creating the community a whole lot of great video game music!

If you like what the composers of the community do and you want to show your support to them, you can be directly in contact with them, but if you want to show your support to the community as a whole and help us arrange events such as the RMN Music Pack, Summoner of Sounds and the RMN Music Pack 2, you can now become Guardian of The Groove and donate to the cause!

Every penny counts and the money will be used first and foremost to have artwork to go with the music and then to offer rewards for participating members. Any extra funds to the cause will be spent on future RMN Music events.

To get the Guardian of the Groove achievement you have to PM Happy after the transaction goes through, so that he knows to apply the benefits to your RMN account.

Thank you everyone! Let's do our best!

Calicer, that piece has a very pied piper type feel, a wandering minstrel band definitely in the medieval mode. I really like it, though like Cash it felt like there are a few moments where there intertwined melodies don't seem to mesh very well, not so much in tone perhaps more in timing.

ResidentEcruteak, I think you've named your theme pretty accurately, it's much more tranquil than upbeat or lively. That's not to say it doesn't still fit the theme of light of heart it just comes at it from a different direction. This feels more like a twilight theme (the time of day, not the books/movie) a sort of feeling of a companionable end to a full day with a group of friends sitting around either playing or listening while they converse.

TheRexion for something you just whipped up this is fun, the building and intertwining themes really work well, though I must admit the repeating theme that underlays it all at times feels a little too loud or prevalent. In addition it cuts off really abruptly which kind of left me hanging wondering where it was heading and if you were aiming for a crescendo ending or a reverse where each theme dropped away to go back to the base and then to silence. I adore the title of it though :)

Happy, there are badges for feedback? Well that's a win, if my emotion based responses (rather than from a base of composition knowledge) count you can add three more to my tally :)

I finally finished my first full song thanks to the motivation of this event.

I'm nervous about it (it took me a few minutes to finally decide to click the "Submit" button), but making video game music has always been a skill I wanted to acquire, so it's good that I finally got at least one tune out somewhere other than the inside of my mind.

One thing I'm not 100% sure about is the sound of the wind instrument, so I might add some other versions later on. There are also a couple of harp notes that I'm not satisfied with, but I had enough of this track for today, so I'll fix them tomorrow.

Really sorry for the mix up. I hope the roughly 2 remaining weeks is still enough time for people to complete at least one theme.
Sure you won't consider an extension? Also one ting i think is hard for peole to find is light-hearted battle themes, so i;m gong to try my hand at those
Aight, I just finished a piece. You can check it out over here.
I'm not sure why but as I was browsing my VSTs for some instruments which might work well for a quirky piece I came across the Banjo and thought: "This is the perfect instrument for this". I didn't have much time to study up on Banjos though, I just listened to some Banjo music and watched a few tutorials on how to play the Banjo.
My second choice was a bagpipe by the way.

This piece is loopable and has the loop commands built-in. That's why the ending sounds rather sudden.

I would really appreciate some feedback!

@ chenbaiwan:

That new version of The Hunt sounds really good now!

@ Fulminis-ictus:

Hah, this is great. Sounds very energetic and also authentic. Nothing to complain about composition, I like it a lot. Fits the theme of the challenge really well. It just feels somewhat short so I was wondering how well it loops, but it might do just well!

The mix feels a bit left centered in general, especially the violin sounds it could be closer to center - or at least I personally feel it's a bit distracting when the entire soundscape leans too much to either monitor, considering the banjo is panned slightly left as well... Otherwise than that the mix depth seems pretty good, especially the bass is very tight. Though the cymbals and splashes sound like they could create more space, as in have more reverb and create more ambiance.

@ Tean Koi:

Very well composed woodwinds. The theme feels very fitting for the challenge and creates a very light hearted village or town atmosphere, or why not a cheerful event theme.

Generally I feel the composition as well as the mix are very solid, though if I were to improve the mix further, I feel there are a lot of volume details that can be improved.

- The highest flute or piccolo notes are a bit too loud at some parts

- The lower woodwind playing briefly in the intro and coming in again at 0:17 could have more volume and presence when it is played.

- The guitar could perhaps create a bit more reverb and have less foreground presence than the woodwinds that play the main melody phrases. At 0:38 I feel it needs to come up to the front as it takes the lead momentarily, though.

- The percussion elements could all use more volume and still they would probably sit well in the mix.

@ Someoneman:

Sounds very light-hearted and especially homely to me. Very well composed mood. I like the melody a lot. I can easily imagine this for some light-hearted town in a j-rpg.

I feel the intro up until 0:14 is not so strong though, and the song gets a proper direction only from there on. Something weird happens at 0:49 and again at 1:49. The way the harp suddenly breaks the pattern sounds distracting and almost like the song was "lagging."

What comes to the mix, the harp could build more ambiance by having a bit less volume and build a soundscape behind the main melody woodwind you have there. The strings are pretty subtle which is good, and they sound appropriate volume in relation to the main melody instrument, but the harp just feels too loud. I'd personally try giving the harp some reverb, less volume, and raise the main melody volume so that it has a bit more presence over the harp. I would probably also try raising the strings tiny bit in volume, though.

@ drassray:

Interesting sounds. :P I like the mood, though I feel the structure is pretty ambient and further polish in the mix would do it a lot more justice. The strings build most of the soundscape foundation here and the shaker and other percussion having so much more volume over them sounds distracting to me.

I'd try bringing the shaker and the other foreground percussion down a bit and have the flute to prevail as the foreground instrument with the triangle, for example. The percussion which sounds like a seal... could probably also have some reverb / subtlety to it.

I like the uniqueness of the mood here, though. And the instrumentation is somewhat light-hearted, even if the track general tone feels somewhat neutral and curious to me.

@ TheRexion:

Nice relaxant mood. I like the beat, too, though it gets a bit repetitive somewhere around 1 minute mark. Further polish in the mix could help fixing this, though, because if the main beat wouldn't be so prevailing in volume in comparison to everything else, it wouldn't necessarily be the center of attention all the time and wouldn't get repetitive as fast.

The composition feels solid enough, though if you're looking for feedback for the mix, I think the main voices could stand out more and the percussion could sit in better and support the main voice. Right now it feels the ambient pads and flute are just swaying somewhere in the background while the main beat is taking most of the attention. It could be as simple fix as toning the volumes of the percussion down a bit. You could try to give the synth hihat or whatever that is, a bit of delay or reverb perhaps?

I don't think there will be many deadline extensions. 1 month should be enough to complete at least one theme for the challenge and if you don't find the time to do so, then you can participate the next challenge. There's so many chapters to come that I don't like the idea of extending the deadlines.

I noticed the artwork in this and wanted to know something. I know of the artist who made that and even talked to them before, so was permission given to use that character design, or is the creator of this event the very same artist?

It's stated on his deviantart profile that his artwork can be used for non-commercial purposes by crediting him. I hope this answers your question.

Hey peeps, don't forget requesting! Do you need a specific light-hearted theme? Request away! And hope someone has the time to complete the request...

Seems we haven't got new entries for a couple of days. I've been working my entries slowly on the side planning to release them at least a bit before the deadline.

How's everyone else doing?

@TungerManU not sure how I missed yours, but it's definitely a different feel to most of the others I've listened to thus far. Most composers seem to have equated the light of heart challenge with a medieval/minstrel/circus type feel which is not a bad thing in any way, but yours is definitely modern era. It's more like a theme that could be piped over the speakers at a children's toy store in a modern shopping centre, or played in the background at a theme-park. It doesn't necessarily make me smile but there is a funky aspect that is light-hearted. It may be a little too long, though I imagine within a game that wouldn't be as noticeable as it is just listening to it.

@Kunsel though speaking of a more modern feel your options has that vibe too, I'd put it as the backdrop to a social scene with friends, not a party per se it's too light for that but perhaps a more casual get-together. Everything in it blends seamlessly together there are no off or misplaced moments and it feels very balanced and well constructed. My only possible complaint is the opposite of TungerManU's, it feel a little short and whilst I know that it would be looped there is almost an expectation of something a little more.

@Fulminis-ictus Yee-haa! I mean seriously that is hoe-down music. I'd expect that walking into a barn somewhere and seeing all the villagers engaged in a frantic but choreographed square-dancing session. Though I really couldn't see it used anywhere else, it's much too energetic for background music of any variety, this piece wants you to pay attention to it and will drive whatever scene it is used in. I think I probably would have liked a bit more fiddle in it (you can't call it violin in this instance) but that is a personal preference I just like the interplay between it and the banjo and would have liked to hear more of it.

Made my submission, uploaded both .OGG & .WAV so that you can use my track in your projects if you'd like to.

-Banjo Utopia by Fulminis-ictus: Pretty much what Nhubi wrote. It's that classic barn-o-banjo. Banjo is a happy instrument, especially when it's fast. The song doesn't say anything else to me. I would add more irregularity to make it feel more alive, small mistake or something.

-Emotion by Someoneman: I don't feel happy while listening to this song. It's more about longing or parting. Someone is going to war or was killed. Man, It's really sad.

-Emotion 2 by Someoneman: It's part of the main melody from Emotion, aint it? I don't like the main instrument (back-pipe?) but that subtle underline is nice.

-Forest Stroll by Dysergy This one is nice. It has a mild Asian vibe at the start and develops itself in something more. This basic melody, which is later overlaid by flutes is really pleasant. However these flutes are too loud, destroying peaceful atmosphere of the track.

-The fellow with the hat by TheRexion I'm not as thrilled with this one. Most of it works well, it's melodic catchy. It's pretty fast yet zenful. But it's too fast to me. I can't imagine myself using this one. Also that clipping is annoying.

-When A Clean Guitar Smiles by Aaron Colunga: The sound of this one probably is clean and I like arrhythmic deconstruction of music you create within your creation. And it's pretty funny. But It's bit too random for me to use it in a game, I guess. Also I would not use it in a happy situation.

-Strange Friends by Aaron Colunga: I'm beggining to see your approach to composing. You are trying to keep it minimal in every possible way and that is good. Together with your other songs it's starting to be interesting. The problem is that your song usually don't work as stand-alone.

-The Hunt Ver 2 by chenbaiwan: Reminds me of medieval feasts. The way you use violin as main instruments and the rest is kept in background is clever, cuz it doesn't disturb me and I can stay being dived in dialogue or puzzle.

Thanks for the comment, I thought that they were a bit loud myself. But no one else I'd asked to listen to the track commented on them so though they were alright. I'll adjust accordingly.

Argh still gotta whip up something. I've been mulling over a Klezmer-inspired battle track, but I've got to get it done...

I stumbled on this thread after registering and would like to contribute. After reading the licensing policy above, I was hoping to simply get confirmation on my understanding of the details.

It seems that any material selected for the music pack cannot be used by another developer in a commercial game without permission from the original composer. Is this a correct interpretation of the policy?

Also, does the original composer still retain the right to sell his original composition? Thanks for the info.

I believe you're correct on the first, but as was already pointed out to me it wouldn't make sense to sell tracks made for this as they'll be available in the free pack.

Pretty much this!

Also, Summoner of Sounds entries will not be used for the actual RMN Music Pack 2. RMN Music Pack 2 will run as a separate event. There may still be some sort of collection release of the Summoner of Sounds entries, though.
Thanks for the info. So I understand that RMN Music Pack 2 will eventually run as a separate event. Would it still be possible to submit a sample for Summoner of Sounds AND still have it qualify for an entry into RMN Music Pack 2 at a later date, however?

In other words, should I hold out to submit an entry to RMN instead of sharing it here? I would hate to share a sample here only to have it be disqualified from the Music Pack. If I'm not mistaken, both of these events are free resources for developers?

Once again, thanks for the clarification.

Yes, submission for both of the events will be shared for free. And no, you can't submit same song for both events. It doesn't benefit the community in any way. I recommend partaking the Summoner of Sounds events if you're looking to be involved in the RMN Music events for the current time being, as the RMN Music Pack 2 event won't be starting for a good while yet.
