Oh my goodness, these are all so good. ;___; Ah-hahahaha, definitely feeling the humbleness all over the place here. OTL
I'm loving listening to these! It's really cool to see what everyone did (the chiptune hnnnghhh I am digging the chip tune <333).
Good job, everyone~! ;w;

I'm going to give each song a fair listen before voting/commenting, but I've already tried a few. We've got some great entries here. Lots to pick from. :)
Holy turnout Batman!
This is really hard to pick a favorite, there are cool things about so many of these ._.
Click to see lots of rambling:
God, this is so hard to call ._.
ALRIGHT.. Well all things considered:

..and nice work everyone!

I will also add that a whole handful of these seem to include sounds that wouldn't be technically playable by three players (like, I counted a few choirs in these)
There's too much to say about all there so I'll just spam some of the thoughts I jotted down whilst listening through these:
I kept noticing things that reminded of of existing tracks in many of the songs (that's not an accusation of plagiarism at all btw! Just things that stood out to me :>)... I noticed some hint of "Bolero of Fire" from OOT in the opening notes of Entry 10 and some FF7 shinra theme (I think it's that one) in Entry 18, Something about Entry 20 reminds me of a song from either FF7 or 8 and there were some very FF-ey bars in Entry 16 too and maybe some Castlevania and Chrono Trigger vibes in that and a couple of other entries too (11 reminded me of CT a bit actually). Entry 15's drums reminded me of the terminator theme crossed with ff8's battle music. Entry 17 sounded like a really catchy pop song. Entry 12 is groovy as hell and maybe would work in a shooter or platformer, same goes for 27 actually. Entry 5 sounds super heroic and oldschool and I quite liked that angle. 29 sounds like a real guitar thrown in there :O.
A few of the most high-quality ones seem like the ones that are most flirting with breaking the "three instruments playable by three people" rule so I'm feeling a little divided with regard to that. Also a lot of the "nicer" tracks, musically speaking, are sort of the least fitting to the theme at times imo, which makes this even harder.
Number 14 sounds like it came straight from the 80's! (reminded me of The Smiths or Duran Duran or David Bowie or possibly The Cure) I absolutely love those sounds and is sounds-wise definitely my favorite. If somebody made a game with the whole soundtrack with this style I'd be all over it.

What about the percussions? I mean, is only 1 instrument of percussions, or we can write like mmm...
1 French Horn
1 Bass Strings
1 Cymbal/ Timpani/ Snare/ Gong/ etc..
Because i listened some compositions that has 2 melodic instruments and various percussions or sounds that don´t belong to only 1 percussion instrument.

Other favorites
13 - wouldn't even realise it had a 3 instrument restriction - very well done
16 - very FF-esque, could have been my top one if it lasted a little longer and progressed a little more
21 - If this wasn't a lava temple theme, this would be right up there, great BGM
23 - same as 21

I'd count "a drum kit" as one instrument, maybe with some additional things like, maybe a cowbell or chimes. And something like a piano can sound like two different instruments given the right spread/velocity (as I'm sure I don't need to tell you :x).
In the original thread Happy mentioned that the guideline was that an instrument was something that "a person could play alone".. So by that standard "a drum kit" is perfectly acceptable as far as I'm concerned. You wouldn't usually have timpani included in a drum kit though as the timpani set is usually a whole one-person instrument in its own right due to space, among other things.
My Vote: Entry 11
What the heck did you MP3ers use to make your songs? Anvil sucks, and midi is a pain in the somethingsomething.

For this submission: Cubase, EastWest Symphonic Orchestra, Yamaha P90.
I also use Reason 4 and a bunch of other VSTs but not for this submission
Update: we have a late entry, that I decided was okay to include (since votes are cumulative over the 3 phases, and since I'm a nice guy)

So, is "What a person can play alone" or all the set in the midi section? Because i heard bongos, a bass drum and cascabels or something played at the same time, if the player is an octopus i think is alright but for a person with two arms that
can´t be possible.
Anyway, seems that all the percussions count as 1 Instrument/Layer in this contest, would be too difficult to write rules about that i guess, i just wanted to know that :)
Entry 1 - reminds me a bit of EVO Search for Eden on the SNES.
Entry 2 - didn't feel like a lava temple to me. Seemed more like "I just won the game!" ending credits theme, tbh. Still pretty good though.
Entry 3 - Very loud! I thought it fit the theme well.
Entry 4 - Spooky! It reminded me more of a haunted mansion or the like, but I suppose it fit the "temple" part of the intended theme.
Entry 5 - A good solid entry, and imho would work as a background theme to a lava temple, but would fit almost any setting, really.
Entry 6 - Vampires ahoy! But are there too many instruments??
Entry 7 - A very sombre tune that is nicely put together.
Entry 8 - FINAL BATTLE!
Entry 9 - For whom the bell tolls! Graveyard-ish, imho.
Entry 10 - very temple-y, but not very lava-y
*Entry 11 - Excellent! Great atmosphere, with an island tribalish vibe.
Entry 12 - ROBOT VOLCANO ISLAND OF THE FUTURE...IN SPACE -or- The Space Cantina
*Entry 13 - holy distorted piano batman! great drumwork though - really invokes a sense of tribal drums if they were interpreted by Phil Collins. I really like this one.
Entry 14 - Eerie vibe, with a twangy guitar reminiscent of some old school country music that fades into a strange tantric soundscape. And then ends.
Entry 15 - Epic forest melody - Robin Hood is here to save the day!
Entry 16 - very temple-y! I'd play a dungeon RPG to this. (<-- that is praise)
Entry 17 - very catchy, but I love that guitar synth sound so I am probably biased. Doesn't really fit the theme though, but I still like it.
Entry 18 - LAVOS IS BEING SUMMONED!...by Dracula... (sounds awesome, though!)
Entry 19 - Good buildup, a very much Jungle theme, or even Jungle temple. The jungle leading up to the Lava temple perhaps.
*Entry 20 - Wow great composition (but I am a sucker for harps). Great ambience, too.
*Entry 21 - wow, this is just 3 instruments? Very impressive composition
Entry 22 - very atmospheric and a good ambience. Fits the theme well.
Entry 23 - so quiet! Good ambience in this one too, but it doesn't make me think of a lava temple.
*Entry 24 - oooh I like this one. Very menacing! Evokes a great sense of entering a forbidding temple, with that lava/jungle vibe!
Entry 25 - A nice simple melody, but otherwise didn't do much for me
*Entry 26 - heh, makes me think of someone playing a ribcage-xylophone at the start. This could work as a lava temple, but also an elephant graveyard.
Entry 27 - This could be the fictional Lava Man's stage theme in an NES Megaman. Very good and catchy. The most unique entry for sure.
Entry 28 - The Village Brave saves the Chief's daughter from the cave bear. Very north american indian, and I like it.
Entry 29 - this is very different! Great melody again, and gives off that tribal vibe.
Entry 30 - nice asian minor/upper india vibe with a sombre ambience.
Entry 31 - Gritty distopian future city.
Entry 32 - Minor boss battle GO!
*Entry 33 - Nice combo of pipe organ and arabian-style guitar. Very nice
Entry 34 - This was a last minute late entry, so I am not sure if it followed the rules of only 3 instruments (sounds like 5 or so!). Good tune, though.
Man you guys are all so awesome for being able to compose this great music. Except 10. You suck.
I put asterisks next to entries I seriously considered awarding my votes to for this phase, and re-listened to them again to make my decision.
My Vote: Entry 24
I choose this one because it evoked the greatest sense of wandering around in a Lava Temple in an RPG. Plus, it sounds great.
EDIT:
also, I compiled these notes over the course of 2 days, so if my comments resemble other previously posted comments, it is just a coincidence!
EDIT2:
I should also add that I have ZERO musical training, knowledge or talent (just to put my feedback in context)

Alright, after listening to all of them, I was fairly impressed by the lack of terrible shit. I was especially worried after listening to song #1 (sorry whoever wrote it). I thought there would be a couple stand out songs, and most that just got a ten second listen and turned off. However, this was (wonderfully) not the case!
Wow shit. Why do you even listen to them if you are hoping that they are terrible?
I know Daft Punk Shit sucks ass so I don't listen to it.

Haha, what? I wasn't HOPING they were terrible, I was EXPECTING it as these competitions often have that result. Luckily they weren't, so I was pleasantly surprised and very much enjoying myself.
Also, we got an awesome chip tune (that I would love to hear again with the fourth channel).
NOACCEPTANCE72,will you hangout with me on the weekend?I will be best friends. With you.
