I don't get it. Anime is for people who obsess so intimately as to understand obscure references and smugly parade them around as knowledge? Anime is for people who bask in their brilliance of simple math yet neglect punctuation? Anime is for people who don't know how to crop out corner watermarks? Anime is for people who think blood stains bright red instead of a reddish brown (I suppose you wouldn't want it to look like he's been eating shit*; that'd just be silly)? Anime is for people with hair in their eyes? I don't want to know those people.
*How do you even get a stain like that? Surely it'd be evenly distributed across the lower half of his face if he was eating someone. If it's a wound, why did they just nick the side of his mouth instead of finishing the job or aiming for something a little more vital? Because it makes for better theatrics? That's dumb.

Actually, that's Tokyo Ghoul. I haven't seen it but I think it was around 13 episodes? It also has a second season and a bunch of extra episodes for characters from what I've seen though.
On a side note, I won't deny that anime isn't for kids, but I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of how much you enjoy it. There's anime series that are straight up directed at children, like the one that is airing right now called ''Bananya'' about a cat who lives in a banana yes I'm watching this
Then, there's stuff that's pretty dark, and not just because of blood. Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a nice example. It looks girly on the outside if you google it, but the show actually focuses heavily on themes like despair. Then there's Mirai Nikki, which is about a bunch of people who have to kill each other to become the next god. And if we are talking about something gory, Elfen Lied is da man.
I don't think it is easy to explain to a non-anime watcher why they should watch anime mainly because most of the time it sounds like over exaggeration, but I think if you watch a few anime series, you could actually quite get into it. I used to not like anime but then I decided to watch a few of them for ideas for game dev and ended up really liking it. Anime is like western tv. There are all kinds of it and there are great ones as well as absolute horse shit ones.

Anime shows either have exactly 12 episodes, or run for a decade and a half with hundreds of episodes. Nothing in between.
I haven't quite figured out why. It's not like American shows where they last until they get cancelled due to bad ratings. They just plan from the get-go to end after one really short season, and then one in every thousand shows does things differently and goes on forever.
I like One Piece a lot. Love it. It's a wacky cartoon. As for regular anime, even the comparable Naruto... kinda hate it.

Actually, some longer series have 13 and some shorter ones have 11. Another generally used one is 24 episodes, which is mostly for longer series(though some are 26 episodes if they are even longer). And some really long stuff go to around 51 episodes or somewhere around that. And there are also shorter anime series which last even less than 11 episodes.
Examples for each:
13: Danganronpa, Plastic Memories
11: Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Ranpo Kitan Game of Laplace
24: Kill la Kill, Accel World
26: A Lull in the Sea, Mirai Nikki
51~: Soul Eater, Eureka Seven
Inbetween: Corpse Party(4 episodes), Gurren Lagann(27 episodes)
Point is, it isn't ALWAYS 12 or decades. In fact there are more anime series with less than a hundred episodes than there are with more than a hundred episodes.
And if you look at western TV, it isn't too unusual for them to have multiple seasons add up to more than a hundred episodes.
E: Oh, I do apologize though. Tokyo Ghoul is indeed 12 episodes not 13.
Kill La Kill has like two seasons. i liked Kill La Kill. Gurren Lagann not so much. The first anime I watched had some 17 episodes. It was wildly alternative.
Actually I'm quite a normative freak when it comes to comics. It mustn't have any other number of pages than 12, 24 and 48 (8 a 16 is acceptable as I easily get things mixed together with bits).

It has one storyline. But 24 episodes usually means that the show ran ove the course of two seasons like spring/summer. The same goes for Valkyria Chronicles and Guilty Crown and many other shows with more than 13 episodes. I guess that the number of episodes can be based on the quarter. Summer is always longer than winter.
That doesn't really change the amount of episodes. It was a 24 episode season, not 2 seasons 12 episodes each.
