@Lib - but you like all the YT folk :v like I said I hadn't even heard of him until I found the retsupurae vids re: him, but still it's a very yt-gamer way of behaving. I guess he's just the zenith of that mindset or something.
So I guess the pokemon designers really don't give a shit anymore.

They could make a balloon with a face and get away with it.

yeah so long as it was called like - "inflatoon", "balflator" it would totally wash with pokemon folks.
The first (only?) rule of Pokemon design:
As long as you have portmanteau/punny name for it - anything goes.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

author=InfectionFilesI know, right? It's a shame they don't make them like they did in the first couple generations.

oh wait never mind

You must have had some traumatic birthday parties as a kid.

Uh... drifloon? No?

Some of the generational pokedex entries:
"It tugs on the hands of children to steal them away. However, it gets pulled around instead. "
"It is whispered that any child who mistakes Drifloon for a balloon and holds on to it could wind up missing. "
"These Pokémon are called the "Signpost for Wandering Spirits." Children holding them sometimes vanish. "
Oh hey, that's not creepy at all...
I like pokemon. ^.^
^ Just a plain awful pokemon. (though creepy entries, almost could be said for any pokemon that steals children)
I don't think I have ever seen it considering I stopped playing after 2nd gen.
Not to say there isn't cool pokemon in gen 3 or after, buut yeah. There is a balloon with a face huh.

I don't get the hate about Pokemon designs. They had some shitty designs in Gen 1 and 2 - I mean, hello pokeball pokemon - and yet people think it's cool and edgy to hate on the new ones because "OMG you guys, Gen 1 was so much better!!!"
Frankly, I find them all pretty charming and the games are fun so I really just don't understand. It's like hating on a game that has characters that are similar to another game. Hell, it's actually more like hating a character because they look a bit like someone in real life. "OMG YOU LOOK LIKE <insert actor/actress/someone you know here> I HATE YOU BLARRRRG"
:/

I don't hate on pokemon designs I just laugh about them.
I've not played a pokemon game since red so what follows is pure conjecture:
I think the criticism about new pokemon designs being bad is not because they're too different to how they used to do it back in gen 1 but actually because they're not different enough - by which I mean they just kept applying the same formula but taking it to the nth degree rather than doing something new.
So it's like, okay yeah this formula was new and interesting in gen 1 but now it's just the same thing taken to its logical conclusions and worn out in the process. People are remembering the novelty of gen 1 and equating it with "better designs" when really it's just because it was novel then, rather than superior.

Myes, to say nothing of the cactus bandit, ancient automaton, disaster foreteller, dark hydra, hell hound.....
wait.
But hey, they also got a fucking rapist.

Gen 1 & 2 didn't seem like filler, I guess. Because it was original for its time. It's like they hardly try to make something unique outside of an existing real life animal or object.
Or something that isn't crazy similar to an existing pokemon.
I have fun with pokemon even now as an adult with a gameboy color and silver/or blue version, but I look at the newer games and it just seems tired and drawn out.
Let's say back then during Gen 1 and 2 they made another pokemon game (insert color/thing name) with no new pokemon and just different story or characters or w/e it would have still been fun without amassing like 100+ new weird pokemon.
I don't know, not trying to go off on a pokemon thing here, cause' I'm the same way with Digimon. I didn't follow it after the intial wave because it didn't try anything that new. (I have much less knowledge about digimon than I do pokemon tbh)

That makes me feel better. Red is the only version I've ever played, and still play.
I think it's just the mere fact that once you've got so many Pokemon, you have to start reaching for ideas. It's just common. Don't hate Pokemon for it, hate the process of coming up with new ideas when you've got tons of them fleshed out already.
Unless you can come up with better ones.
For instance, "Pidgey". It's a Pokemon based on a pigeon. In fact, most Gen 1 pokemon were. Buuuut what about when you run out of animals (which they did)? Then you have to start being creative with balloons and the like.
So don't hate, congratulate. If the gameplay is fine, I don't see any reason to hate them just coz they look weird, unless you're just a sucker for not learning new names.
But hell, I haven't played past Ruby.

There are 8.7 million known animal species, I doubt that was the reason.
My true agenda is to create a discussion so stimulating that 200 pages will fly by in a jiffy...
And I'm not hating on pokemon, just some of the designs to a degree. And I wouldn't even call that "hate" just more like wtf
They should stop at some point, but they probably won't, right?

Oh, I've got a solution for that...
