More like anyone with taste would go for LoGH.

Yeeeeeeeeeeap, bloody good show. I'm about 45 episodes in, saw that 'alcohol is humanity's friend' one the other day. Yang is quite thoroughly where it's at, that much is clear so far. But yeah, another vote for LoGH, if it counts for anything I like it quite a lot and I'm not even usually that into sci-fi (though thinking about it, it could probably work quite easily in a different setting so maybe that's not that relevant).

Yeah, I was not at all into sci-fi until I watched LOGH. But it's kind of "soft" sci-fi you could say. I got into it because of the fantastic characters, dialogue, and visual style. If you hate any sort of lengthy conversation or exposition in your anime, you will hate LOGH. There is an entire episode that is basically a History Channel-esque documentary. And there are admittedly a lot of cliches, but also many plot twists that made me realize that LOGH is not your average animu/JRPG story. "What...hey...you can't do that! He can't die! The show's not even 1/4 done!" It's no slice of life series; it's one continuous, filler-less, 110-episode non-stop ride to the conclusion. If you are not interested in an actual story that is told in this fashion, don't watch LOGH.

If nothing else, it deserves props as one of the most faithful 1-to-1 adaptations of a novel series in TV/film/anime history.

Errr, if you do watch it, remember that the film My Conquest is the Sea of Stars comes before the series.I can't remember how necessary it is to watch i.e. if they give you most of the exposition in the first couple of episodes anyway, but either way, it can't hurt. I think there's a film you can watch instead of the first two episodes too that's supposed to be better, but I haven't seen it so can't comment.e

It's not required (I didn't watch it before watching it and it didn't seem to make a difference) but it's a good movie in and of itself and may whet your appetite for the main series. It represents the atmosphere of the series well and if you don't like it, it's possible you won't like the main series. The two gaiden series also come before the main series, but you will only get something (if anything) out of them after watching the main series.

On topic...I am now thinking that I should rewatch the main series in glorious Bru-rei.
