I'm just getting to the point in Mage Duel (mid Act II) where the plot is thickening so I'm thinking about this:
The fact that a September-May homosexual relationship between the villains is fairly crucial to the plot of Mage Duel, the fact that one of the villains is a gay pederast and the other is a bishounen uke, and how totally uncharacteristic of my (usually vanilla to the point of being homophobic and completely exclusive of gays!) work this is! I feel self conscious writing seriously about this subject matter as a heterosexual male because I'm afraid I'll offend someone but, whatever.
It doesn't help that they're both horrible people, but it's not like I'm trying to say they're horrible people because they're gay, they're horrible people who happen to be gay because I thought it was an interesting twist. Also it's the kind of thing that is never treated seriously in video games; characters are never explicitly gay, only hinted at, or are used for comic relief.
At least one of them gets to be a complete badass (the younger one) while the older one is more of the aging, feeble old man stereotype. I think I was mostly inspired by the (very not loving) "relationship" between Griffith and the unnamed old noble in Berserk.

Yeah, I'm something like 40% through Act 2. (1/2 of that 40% was achieved in the last three days, more or less.) More bad news is that I don't plan on releasing MD episodically (there will be no Act II demo) so the next release is the FULL GAME which probably won't be for a few months. A December or January release is possible.
