I mean, the only way I actually act on that belief any more, other than arguing on the internet, is just to release all of my stuff as free for anyone to reuse, and try to convince as many other people as possible to do the same. I've used ripped graphics and sound and made fangames enough times in my life to have gotten past that point, and I'm at a point where I feel comfortable making my own original stuff now. I don't think I'd have gotten to this point without a decade and a half of making unlicensed Final Fantasy derivative works though.

I do think the people who grip tightly onto their work and try to keep other people from using it to make their own art are selfish assholes who care more about their own reputation than about what they're actually making. What's the point? It doesn't hurt you, the industry, or anyone else for you to let people reuse your graphics and music and ideas in their own work. Those people are your allies in bringing beauty to the world, not your competition.

I'd agree, given that I'm in a similar situation, my only request is that if fellas did use my work that they show me where so i can get mad hyped about it, credit for the few things I have made is all I really ask.

That said there's a lot of painfully obnoxious laws in the U.S that make these sorts of things powder-keg situations. Since said laws were written back in the time before the internet copyright is in effect even in the case of non-commercial work, it's very rare for these things to be hunted down but it's nonetheless what the private sector ultimately fears.

Non-commercial Fan art is an act of copyright infringement by U.S. law, I know, that's fucking stupid, but that's how it is. Most companies will simply not give a shit because who doesn't love fan art? But if some shitty person passed it as their own work and original idea, then the original precipitant of said material or resource is at large risk of losing their intellectual property.

If you make fan art and your host has .com or .net attached to it that work is at risk of being C&D'd, however having an affix outside of the jurisdiction of U.S. law such as .se or .de are loopholes that escape the grasp of such laws because it's beyond the policing power's jurisdiction.

I also am not the best to ask on this, my knowledge of this matter is incredibly baseline, and this here is the extent of my knowledge.
