Those damn christians eh. Never bothering with science and just saying it's all irrelevant instead.
Correction: They never said it wasn't relevant, only that trying to understand the ways and reaches of the universe was a pursuit the likes of which belong to Satan. It's taken as an attempt to overthrow God and the omniscience that belongs only to Him in order to turn mortal man into all-knowing deities. That's why Galileo Galilei's findings were seized and himself placed under house arrest until his death in a time when the church held the supreme power in the country.

Sounds like what I said to me :D
Only with very fine differences that shouldn't be overlooked.

I've been away from the computer all day, and really there is only one thing I'm thinking.
There is running water on Mars. Freaking running water on Mars!
My inner and outer geeks are currently shaking their groove things on the patio and I'm cracking the champagne.
Running Water!
Next it'll be tripods on Horsell Common.
That post reminded me of this:

Not gonna lie: Space mermaids sound awesome.
With how fast technology has grown in the last 20 years, it's not that far out of the realm of belief that huge jumps will continue to occur. Proper space travel may soon be a thing, especially with as fast as we're developing when it comes to all areas of science.
Like, seriously, I was brought up in a very, very Christian family with pretty strict ideas and ideals but I've chosen to educate myself outside of that. It is your own choice to do such a thing when you're old enough to understand the limitations of your own upbringing - seek out the answers if you don't understand something or were taught x is y. That's the true beauty of becoming an adult - being able to choose what you learn, what you keep from your past or throw away. What you become.
Fair enough if science doesn't interest you, but don't let ignorance (willful or otherwise) be your reason for poo-pooing on others' excitement.

Gotta agree with Sated and Liberty here. Microorganisms are awesome, and I'm also very excited about this discovery ^_^
SPACE MERMAIDS. YES PLEASE. I should put space mermaids in a game.

EDIT: Found my answer. There's actually a definitive "male brain" and "female brain". Who knew? Unleash the sexists!
Space Mermaids and the Microorganisms on Mars! The new game from unity.
Actually that sounds like the name of a band on tour...which would still be an awesome game if unity made it.
Sorry (not sorry) I'm in a very happy place right now and having others who do the 'wow science is great and isn't this stuff so cool' thing is just making my up mood even more buoyant.
I can be a pragmatist tomorrow, tonight I'm looking at the stars.

I'd love to engage, but when I try, people shut me out because of my wrong hypotheses and I never learn that way. Even when the hypothesis has some merit to it, it isn't to their liking and the whole thing gets shut down. Adults don't want adult conversations; they just want to feel like they've got the more adult opinion, which is a very childish way to approach discourse. It's a little thing called concrete thinking and it's slowly killing us via complacency.
A lot of it is about attitude. If you come off like your ideas are better than others, then others will generally be quicker to try and shut you down. I find I personally learn a lot by trying to be more open to not having the right answer. Granted, this is harder to do if it's about a topic that pushes my buttons (read: the thread that got locked recently).

Personally I want Space Unicorns and Dragons. ^.^ But Space Mermaids will do in a pinch!
ALL THREE OF THEM. IN ONE SETTING. OMG.

I'm with you! Every now and then, I just like to get lost in awe. And I'll put that game idea in my pocket for possible future use >.> XD
So perhaps I'm missing something, but does finding running water on Mars automatically means we'll find microscopic life as well? Because otherwise I don't understand what's the big deal is. We already knew there was water there in some shape of form, no? ...I think I'll save my enthusiasm for when the existence of such life is actually confirmed.
Sure, I'd love to have some Martian sea monkeys as pets. =^)

Can we start a thread questioning as to where the cisgendered, cissexual people fall in terms of how to properly express their cissexual(?) preferences in this advanced modern world so that you aren't accidentally branded bisexual when you know that's not the case (or worse yet, a bigot)? Because that's going to be a problem if we aren't all on the same page. There has to be an easier way to say this, because I'm about to say screw it to the whole thing and just "choose" (I know it's not a choice, but after the reality debate in the last thread, I can never be sure again) agender asexual because why the hell does any of this matter? Also I can't see my brain, so I don't know if it's male or female.
Can I please just be me?!
(My brain hurts...)
Furthermore, I'd like to engage in the "death of the author" thing Solitayre brought up in the last thread concerning intent and affect, even though everything is nothing and everyone's everything can't be ignored so in order to write everything to everyone, you must write nothing in order to everything nothing everything everyone everything EVERYTHING- {EMERGENCY REBOOT}
{ENGAGING RHYTHM}
My sexual tastes are simple: I like the female form but get a boost out of women who aren't afraid to not act "ladylike". Although, one might argue that "not ladylike" (even though I most associate "ladylike" with modesty) is inherently "masculine" given the standards set by society, so does that mean I'd be most comfortable with a pre-SRS trans man? So I'm physically hetero but mentally bi?

Boy: Hey sis!
Girl: What is it *this* time?!
Boy: Look! Lookee at it! I found a strange book in granpappy's attic!
(Boy holds a large, clearly ancient tome to his sister's face.)
(The title reads: A Sightseer's Complete Guide to Dragons, Mermaids, Unicorns, and other Fantastical Beasts of Space; by Balderic Rumptindash)
(Boy opens book.)
Boy: Sis! Sis! Sis! Look! Look! Look!
(Boy frantically points at a lavishly decorated page.)
Boy: It's the magic words that'll let us see dragons and mermaids and stuff! Look!
Girl: Jeez, grow up. Magic is not real.
Boy: I'll just read it then!
Girl: Bah, suit yourself.
Boy: Akurha kar-haur. Ripas Pasairsi; Pasairra asa mahikarsi damung. Dung-gurra akursi, no sikairha mantaur. Dung-gurra akurha koirsi...
(Granpappy walks in, and sees Boy holding his tome.)
(Granpappy realises what Boy is doing; His eyes widen in terror.)
Granpappy: No! Stop!
(Granpappy reaches out for the tome.)
(A soft, curious glow started to form around Boy and Girl.)
Boy: Kun akurha gusturra kairsi. Akurha kar-haur.
(The glow intensifies, completely covering Boy and Girl.)
Granpappy: Nooo!
(Granpappy shields his eyes from the brilliance. When he regains his sight, the two were gone.)

Corf, you seem really eager to start a fight or argument with whoever you can. Chill out. I wouldn't recommend starting up any topics until you're in a better headspace.

But I won't care later. I'm distressed because I don't feel like I know myself anymore.
I'm scared. Is this how I'm supposed to feel in order to find the truth?
EDIT: Kenton, I see you in the active members list. Please forgive me.
We're all going to make mistakes and hurt people. The best thing you can do is, when it happens, do your best to learn from it. This probably isn't the best place to figure out more nuanced things about sexuality and sexual preferences, but I don't know what else to recommend to you. I don't think there's any one place where someone can go and blindly trust what people tell them - rather, we form our own opinion from the multitudes of people we're around and the experiences we have. Hopefully, those are good people and experiences that we can learn from in a healthy way.

Anyway, "Death of the Author" is just a term used to describe the idea that sometimes people will interpret your work in a way you didn't expect or intend. Maybe a lot of people! This doesn't 100% exclude either the author's intentions or the reader's mindset. If someone hears "Helter Skelter" and decides to go on a killing spree, that doesn't fall on the Beatles.
But, if it seems like a lot of people are interpreting your work in a way you didn't expect, maybe you failed to clearly convey what you really wanted to say?
In the same way, if someone says something in your game is offensive, take note of it. If a lot of people say that thing is offensive, maybe it comes off in a way you didn't expect. It happens! The best thing you can do is just learn from it and try to improve in the future.

You like what you like, and that's fine and dandy. Whatever society says, masculinity and femininity are not antithetical; Masculine is not "the lack of feminine properties" and feminine is not "the lack of masculine properties."
Don't beat yourself up corf. I'm sure things will work themselves out; just take it all one step at a time.

Yes there was water but the notion was that the planet was too cold and with too thin an atmosphere to allow for liquid water, which is what you need. Frozen water which is what is at the caps and believed underground would not aid in sustaining life. The high salt content that has been detected is the reason why it can start to flow at around -23 degree C, and also gives hope to the idea that there are salty aquifers under the surface that never completely freeze.
There is an analogous region on Earth, the Atacama desert. The only places you get microbes living there is where water deliquescences out of the atmosphere to create damp patches. This is similar to what has been seen on the surface of Mars and radically increases the likelihood of finding life there, and tells the scientists where to look.
All in all it's worth some enthusiasm, but I'm perfectly happy to carry your share for this one :).
