Well said, piano! And I would agree that Picard's strength lies in diplomacy and not action.
I still prefer Picard and feel like he's a better written character because he was human and made mistakes. (Though you could just chalk that up to the writing getting better generally in TNG)
While he is hung up on the prime directive, I think that is to set him apart from the brash and straightforward Kirk.
I mean, Picard rarely goes on landing parties for god sakes! And for good reason, being so important.
And that's why we have Riker! Best of both worlds baby

Also, little edit here, I think I identify with Kirk more as a person. I'm more him than I could ever be Picard. And I guess I like that about Picard, strict to a point of dangerous at times but also very rewarding. It's fun to see people like that break those rules, it's a rare but special thing. Besides I could use some structure in my life lol

Data is bae to be honest. I have only seen a few large chunks of TNG though!
Data is so bae
Oh, Kirk made mistakes. He was very human and his interactions with the crew show that quite a bit. He supports his people, yes, but he constantly has to pull himself back from engaging with them too much because he was in a leaders' position. He still had his friends who he would vent to - Spock and Bones - and he knew exactly who could do what job. He had utmost trust in his subordinates, but he also knew they were people who had problems and would try his best to help them without blurring that line between friendship and leadership too much.

Picard was a lot more friendly and engaging with his crew, and while that isn't a bad thing, it sometimes caused problems with how they reacted to him and his orders. Kirk very rarely had issues when it came to giving orders because his crew knew they could trust him 100% - and if he wasn't there they knew that Spock had his trust completely to do what needed doing.

Picard and Riker had their issues, though, and sometimes there was a bit of a power struggle. The only times that was a problem between Spock and Kirk were when outside forces were conspiring to create that conflict (such as when Spock was affected by the pollen on that one planet), whereas there was some internal strife between Riker and Picard that caused minor rifts and instability sometimes.

Janeway is beast, though. God, I love that woman.

Data was such a fascinating and unique character. The childlike curiosity and sense of wonder he had was simply beautiful. Spiner portrayed him beautifully. He was one of the best actors on Star Trek. At the same time, you really can't take anything away from Spock. Of all the Vulcans on the show, only Nimoy was able to successfully portray one as seemingly emotionless and logical. He had built the character to such a point that when he had his emotional breakdown on The Motion Picture, the crying looked forced and uncomfortable.

Edit: There was also the Maquis and the loss of Ro Laren. That whole scenario was unnecessary and it was because Ro felt she couldn't trust Picard, and let's face it, he wasn't very trustworthy in that situation. I was very angry with Captain Sisko when he saw a single Maquis raid and immediately took the side of Gul Dukat, who he knew was a pathological liar. When Picard investigated the Maquis, I saw him as being far less interested in justice and peace than in maintaining a status quo.

Picard and Kirk are definitely completely different characters that just so happen to be in the same role.

I still like Kirk more for much of the reasons piano stated. I just feel like his conflicts and solutions were more... Genuine of a heroic individual? Picard kind of bored me.

@Liberty- I guess I meant Kirk is more action hero than Picard. Saying human was probably a bad choice. Like how Kirk is more of a ladies man and a fighter smooth talking badass. He's great, no qualms there. But he's a typical lead man. Picard kinda takes on that mentor/wise one/ wizard which is usually the strong support to the lead. I'm not sure this is coming across well, it's been a long day and I need to sleep xD
Janeway has qualities of both Kirk and Picard so agreed!

@piano- oh, I love them both. Probably the two best actors of each show and both add so much. It's a great Data/Picard Spock/Kirk dynamic that just works.

edit:
@ratty- Yes, it's hard to really compare the two. I'm Picard man lol
Probably doesn't help i'm rewatching TNG

Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays. A game of betrayal, where the most suspicious person is brutally murdered? How savage.

I'd have liked to see that in voyager too, but unfortunately the actor of Chakotay was god awful at acting -.-

But the best character to me will probably always be the Emergency Medical Hologram.
Aw, I liked Chakotay...

Mainly because I was a hormonal teen... :DDD
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Janeway was mostly pretty boring except for when aliens would pull some shit 45 minutes into an episode, and she would just get this exasperated look on her face like "Oh my fucking god I do not have time for this shit. Just shoot them." And she'd just shoot them and fly away, and they'd be like "Oh shit, that wasn't supposed to happen. You guys are supposed to come up with a convoluted plan revolving around non-interference that backfires several times due to transporter interference and then teaches us a valuable life lesson. Not beam us into space. Fuck."

Tim Allen from Galaxy Quest was the best Star Trek captain though. Never give up! Never surrender!
See, you just pointed out what makes Janeway so great! She was so over everyone's bullshit all the time, you could practically feel her rolling her eyes at everything.

The problem is that only happened like 5% of the time, which is why she wasn't really that interesting. The rest of the time she was nothing but Generic Starfleet Personnel #73, Acting In Command. With the exception of the pilot episode, Janeway could disappear from any episode in the first three seasons and Chakotay or Tuvok could be on the bridge acting in command instead, and there would be no discernable difference.
I get mildly annoyed every time I see video game journalists repeat the misconception that Final Fantasy 7 had a $100m marketing campaign. The original press release from almost two decades ago is quite clear that it was Sony's marketing budget for all of 1997--which included a lot more than just FF7--but instead games media just keeps incestuously reporting incorrect figures. It makes me wonder what other things they're wrong about.

I don't bother with "video game journalism" because I really can't be assed to care. Give it to me in the form of a Let's Play.

It'd probably be easier to list the things they're not wrong about. Really, for the most part, gaming gerbilism is good for news and the occasional interview and not a whole hell of a lot else.

Except the big red one on Jupiter. That shit's 400 years old.
Damnit piano, no loopholes!
Then there's the everlasting lightning storm in Venezuela.

That is honestly amazing. So FFX's Thunder Plains can be a real thing.

I'm considering getting rid of my Dudesoft.ca site. It's a waste of money, and I'm not really doing anything on there that I can't do on tumblr/fb/twitter/dA anyway.

Mostly just a vanity url. To top it off I'm getting near endless flack for my handle. I know it's a lame name I made in highschool, but it has history for me. Thanks to her and the continuous claim that 'everyone she knows' thinks it sounds like I have trouble keeping it up.
How dude = penis instead of horse poop is beyond me. I can understand the soft ≠ software miscommunication. Still, it's just a damn name. Right?
