GAY CHARACTERS
Posts
author=Feldschlacht IVauthor=ididaFinal Fantasy XIII and Suikoden V have lesbian characters.
But I've never played a game with a female gay character.
Wow really? I haven't played Suikoden V, but I am shocked about the FFXIII statement.
I felt as if they had a relationship that rivaled one of strong sistership. (Unless it has been stated by the storywriters of FFXIII that a lesbian relationship between the two is true).
I was one of those who didn't get that vibe. (Although I'd go lesbian for Fang in a heartbeat)
<--------- Obviously
As far as integrating gays into gameplay, I have only played one game where the actions of the gay character is extremely exaggerated:
Enchanted Arms.
That entire game made me LOL. I found it to be absolutely horrid, and the characters banal, to say the least. But, I do not have a problem with gays being in the game. I truly don't think it matters as long as they are treated as a person, and do not have their personality centered around their sexuality, because it takes away from the depth of the character. If we're going to pay that much attention to the gay man and his love life, amidst his struggles as a person, emotionally and physically, we should do the same for those who aren't. The only difference is the kind of people they choose to love. And to be honest, that is an extremely small difference to begin with.
But, one thing I do dislike, is how if writers convey two characters of the same gender having a deep, platonic relationship with one another, people instantly begin to assume they are gay. Now, if a person shows more affection than "normal", the characters are instantly suspect.
Which is what I think happened with FFXIII.

...character who outright states that he likes men...
that would just be terrible writing. you can't just have the characters come out and say exactly what they're thinking all the time. show don't tell applies to everything, not just story writing.

Beelzebot, The Robot Devil: "Your lyrics lack subtlety! You can't just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!"
author=KaliestoYeahI put a scene where two storm troopers are smexing.
Lol sometimes RMN games have gay characters. Quite funny at times if done right.

I made one. LOL!
yes, stereotypes and comic relief are positive representation a+
I like how that's literally as far as most of you can even engage with the subject! for all the noise you guys typically make about your statuses as writers, you sure seem awful at even approaching the idea of gay characters
e: okay the rest of the topic isn't quite as terrible about this as the first and last pages but all the same wow

Yea I was gonna let this topic die since that was a ridiculous necropost anyway buuuut since we're here... tbh krazie it feels like your game is a fourteen-year-old's take on Family Guy but with even less subtlety.
I went through a stage a while back where I was really afraid that a few of my characters for a game I'm working on would be token (or appear token), y'know, there just for diversity's sake, like it was a back-of-the-box bullet point. I don't think that's the case, but I guess I'll find out if that's the case when (if) I finish.
WHAT I'M GETTING AT is that I think there's a lot of good advice to be found in this topic.
EDIT also I learned the word dicksicle

Well, there are plenty of main characters that don't flirt with girls (or anyone), so you can very well imagine they might be gay.
Sorry, I identify with female heroes in my writings and my games, with extremely rare exception. I have plenty of male characters, some of them gay, but I'm a writer that believes in good writing. That means NO EXPOSITION. Having a man in the script screaming "I'M GAY!!!"; umm, yeah, that's exposition. In my writings or games you will NEVER hear a character say something like that unless specifically asked by another character. I choose more subtle devices to flesh out my characters.
I don't write sex for the sake of writing sex. I don't write something because it arouses me. I don't write erotica. I don't cuss in my writings except when it is truly called for (and even that is debatable.).
That having been said, no subject, no matter how controversial or offensive, is off limits to me. Frankly, if I write about gay characters, I hope I'm offending people, because that's the only way you communicate truth. If I write about religion, I hope I'm offending people. If I write about race, I hope we're offending people.
That's the problem with the world today. We're so busy being politically correct, about being offended over the most inane nonsense, that we are no longer intelligent enough to know what should offend us. It should offend us that a large segment of our community feels that they have the moral right to tell a group of people that have and want nothing to do with them how to live their lives.
But I won't write about that conflict, no sir. If I make homosexuality the focus of one of my stories, I'll write it as if there never was a conflict. Wouldn't that be a wonderful place to live? Some people don't think so and I hope they are truly offended.
Nobody chooses who they are. Who people are is what determines the choices they make.
