How many dudes and dudettes here play an MMORPG? And what are your general impressions?
For me, I played a gnome mage to 30 on World of Warcraft a couple years ago. The game was pretty fun, and I enjoyed playing the Deadmines when I reached them, but I eventually quit because I didn't have time to play nor the money for the subscription fee.
But now I'm playing LOTRO. L28 dwarf guardian on Brandywine. I'm having fun but I'm generally just playing it because they offered lifetime membership and I could afford it at the time. My idea is that, since I'm on a limited college budget, I'll play Middle-Earth when I feel like playing a video game and not buy anything else. The game is pretty and the crowd is mature, but honestly I've been doing a lot of reading about Age of Conan and appreciating the design theory so far. I'm debating playing AoC when it comes out instead, even though I'm not a big fan of PvP or of AoC's half-nude women (lawl kewl), because the combat system and the endgame sound excellent. We'll see though.

I used to play Ragnarok Online, Guild Wars, Ultima Online and World of Warcraft. I quit them all, however.
I'm not an MMORPG kind of person. I have a hard time playing a game unless the story/characters hold my interest, or AT LEAST if there is a sense of progression and closure. I'm not cut out for grinding.
I LOVED Warcraft 3, and am really fond of the Warcraft universe, but World of Warcraft was just stagnant after the compulsive addiction waned.

Most people online are selfish wankers, why would I want to play with them? And if you join a guild or whatever, people start expecting things from you, and I can do without that kind of responsibility for a game.
I am also against paying money just to play a game that I already own.
I enjoy the grind, but I prefer to play solo, or with 1 or 2 friends, and it's hard enough to coordinate that. I couldn't imagine doing it with someone online that I don't even really know.
Lastly, MMORPGs give the impression that it's just thousands of people playing a single player game at once, instead of some sort of multiplayer. There doesn't seem to be any rules enforcing you to play as a party/group, other than perhaps the difficulty of an area. It's not like "Kentona joined the Party! *little music ditty plays*"
Diablo II works for me, because it's very playable single player, has the capability for multiplayer (and the play is very linear so cooperation kind of comes by default), theres tons of replayability, and I don't have to pay to play.

Pay to play is a non-issue to me. But I do wish more MMOs made you feel like the world was alive. How long has that damn bridge in Lakeshire been under repair? Almost three years now.
I find it VERY hard to cooperate with anyone in online games that I don't already know from outside the game.
They seem to have the patience of humming birds because most of them apparently have the game down to a science. They don't communicate and expect me to behave a certain way just because it's how the game operates.
I never really tried joining a guild, but it seems next to impossible to stumble upon a guild small enough to be personal, but big enough that there is adequate number of people to go adventuring with.
My friends made a guild, but none of them were ever on so the entire thing was pointless.
But yeah, the grand majority of people I meet in MMORPGs are extremely boring. Typically so focused on the game that I don't ever feel like I'm talking with a person so much as a machine that just wants to get maxed out stats.
I enjoyed WoW for a while. Teaming up with people was slightly more intuitive than normal, but when objectives became complicated, and after I got sick of objectives composed of 'Collect x number of random drops' I hung up my hat.

I played WoW for a good bit. Got a troll rogue to lvl 63 (even though I couldve gotten him to 70 if it weren't for all of these alts I made) I was mostly in WoW for the PvP, the mechanics are actually really awesome since you're always moving. The actual thing that really pulled me in was the World PvP, the fact that it was a dog eat dog, crush anything you see type of environment was really compelling. I never really cared about questing, raiding, or even leveling, but to /spit on that bastard who ganked me earlier. Though Blizzard has nerfed guards to be really tough causing me to do hit and run raids on small low level towns, and not to mention the new outland doesn't really give any players reason to go on city raids anymore. And well I got tired of WoW.
There was also RO, but there aren't any good servers anymore. But thats about it for MMORPGs.

I just shat bricks.
Are you sure it's RO and not Maple Story, WIP? 'Cause I'm very sure that they're coming out with a MS thing for the DS, but I haven't heard anything about a RO on- holy crap. That's crazy awesome. I wonder if it'll actually work like a MMO, instead of just a one-player game. That would be much love.
I used to play FFXI, Guild Wars, Maple Story, and aRO (animaRO). I had a flippin' awesome character in FFXI... till it got deleted. Don't ask me how. I just remember not paying one month, and then I came back and my character was gone. Had a flippin' high level Taru BM/Dragoon. ;_; After that, I kinda got a "curse" with MMORPGs in that I'd make it to L4 and then lose interest. My character in Guild Wars (Prophecies) was only L4 when I stopped; in Maple Story, I made it to L4 and then lost interest in that. aRO is the only one I broke that in (got a L46 Swordsman/? ), but I still deleted the game to save room on my computer. I'll probably get it again when I get a laptop and an external HD. Or else not play any more MMOs. <.<

I didn't believe it til I searched on google, it's going to be online using WiFi it seems.
I've been playing MMOs since Ultima Online, and MUDs before that. The idea of a community of players working together for a single goal, or fighting against each other for no reason other than for shits and giggles is what makes any MMO great.
Ultima Online, even today, I feel is the pinnacle of MMO Culture. There is no limit to the amount of work you can put into one, or many characters. From a Mining and Blacksmithing Swordswoman working out of Britannia to a Flax Farming Archer/Magician living in a Castle on the shores near Skara Brae. Because almost the complete scope of interaction in game is player-driven, there is always something new and challenging to accomplish. Pick up a few friends, head out to Despair, and try to tame a Wyvern, or amass an army and wage war on the PK Murderers at Buccaneer's Den.
It wasn't visually captive, and due to the way it was coded, the interface was a big sluggish and hard to manage, but the gameplay itself was worth trudging through the faults. Community interaction through an online medium at it's best.

Wow! I don't know much about RO, but a DS MMORPG sounds neat!
Also, I played UO for awhile several years back on a free server called Santiago.. it wasn't a very good experience because of the server, there was PKing everywhere and they gave away free loot to players who voted for them on an online poll :P.

Oh, that's right. I DID play Phantasy Star Online for a while.
That game got EXTREMELY repetitive. REALLY limited number of levels. It was really easy to piggy back a skilled player and take down the final boss, though.

I played a MUD for the longest time, but I've never had the money to play subscription MMORPGs. I'd probably like them a lot since I always have when I tried them out at a friend's house. Then again, I ended up spending just as much money on my MUD so I don't see how my logic was there....
The only MMORPG I've played is FlyFF. I'm too cheap/poor to pay for an MMORPG, so I only play free ones.
That being said, it was fine until you get to later levels. Then I had more fun finding/buying nice items and selling them than I had levelling up. I'm on Level 42, I'm fighting enemies 11 levels higher than me, which could take out half my HP in 2 hits or less, and I only get .7 EXP for each. Out of 100, so I have to fight 142 of them to Level up ONCE. And supposedly that's good compared to later levels when you'll get only .06 EXP per enemy, or 1667 enemies just to Level up ONCE. Talk about unrewarding. The pace at which you level up is fine from Level 1 - 5. Afterwards, you'll just stay fighting the same enemies over and over and over and over again. Quests? Consists of you getting a ton of dropped items from enemies that are now weaker than you and rarely drop stuff. Fun.

Most free MMOs I've seen (and I've tried quite a few for short periods) astound me that they can put so much work into art and so little into anything else.
The only online games I've sunk serious amounts of time into are MUDs, specifically Aardwolf and Discworld, though it's been a while since I've been active on either. There are some other games that I enjoyed but that didn't really hook me, like Gunbound.
