What's the point of them then if I need to be a black mage to use them but I can already get the skill as a black mage, particularly with how fast battles are it doesn't even matter if I can swap mid-battle really.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I figure normal skills, once learned, are permanently learned, but materia can be swapped out.
Maybe changing jobs lets you start learning skills from a new job, but doesn't change any of your already-learned skills. Anything you learn from a job is permanently learned.
Alternately, materia could be linked to your weapon or bracelet somehow? I dunno how that would work.
Alternately, maybe materia can be freely switched out during battle without costing a turn, but doing so costs 1 MP.

That would allow people to build their own Job Class in a way.
How's this, go with LockeZ plan. It sounds solid, but also have a way to clear your mind of all spells or certain spells. That way you can learn from a new class if you're skill slots are full? Another idea is Skill Slots being just slots you can input abilities you learned. They would act like Spell Orbs from FF3, whereas Materia grows in power the more you use it. In other words, you can just swap out Spell Orbs into your inventory / into your Skill Slots out of battle. And Materia can be swapped in battle at 1 MP cost, as LockeZ said.
It's a little hard to follow. For instance, how do you get more skills if your skill slots are full?
Easy, Xavion has Spell Orbs he bought. I could introduce more magic shops, or rare finds.
One thing is for sure at this point, I'm all for you guys having lots of spells in this. Gives a good feeling of progression. (Except maybe for Adon haha)
Okay, rambling aside, I will Big Post a little later. Going to take a nap.
Okay... So, as everyone regroups at the Prison Camp, except for LockeZ who is lost forever, suddenly the hatchway from above opens and out drops...

Leaon Squallheart - SeeDy Fuck / Soldier - Level 1
However, he falls so fast he hits the ground and explodes!
Gibbs and blood everywhere! Yuck! Ugh!
Ooo! Materia!
Leaon Squallheart is DEAD!
The Bustersword is useless as it smashes across a rock into a million pieces, but the Materia seems to bounce into the midst of your group.
If you want a Materia, pick a number between 1 and 100. The 5 people closest to the number will get a Materia, the type of which will be released on capture.
The people who can pick: Everyone except Xavion, Khos, Arthur, Zeuzio, MrChearlie, Locke, EvilEagles and Elements. Everyone else is in town. Xavion, you just got the Black Mage class and already have a bunch of stuff... So, you are spending the turn figuring that out. :P
Khos and Arthur
In amongst the junk in the junkyard, Khos finds some heavy-duty fist weapons.
+1 Brass Knuckles
Arthur drinks heavily, and is now quite drunk.
Zeuzio and MrChearlie arrive to join the Party.
Locke
You are in a dry part of the cavern. It appears that you have been decending. The last time you saw water, it was falling off a cliff. You had followed a path that wound around the cavern walls, and led downward. From your current point, your eyes are well adjusted to the darkness. There is some light here, or you wouldn't be seeing at all. Looking around, you notice there's a ray of light further down one the cavern you're in.
Without reason to stay put, you continue along the path. It spirals down and down, until you are in the bottom of this basin. Here, you see the water fall comes to an end. There is a big pool of water.
Further more, something is odd about the waterfall here. The water is sparkling as if lit from behind. Perhaps there is more to see there.
The area you are in is somewhat brighter than before. You are able to see platforms connected by old bridges, and a few random encounters are milling about.
Xavion
License Board purchase: 1 MP!
You have grown into Black Mage / Blue Mage!
You may fill your Skill Slots with spells from the Black Mage skill roster, as discussed. As usual, only Active Skills can fit in Skill Slots and back up/passive skills go in Passive Skill Slots.
Next you install the Big Gear, which is a new one. A mechanical feeling seeps through your little Carbuncle body. It's as if skin has turned to metal sheets and are shifting and sliding your form into a new body shape!
Suddenly, you have become...

Hmm. Not the waterway I was hoping for, then. I have a couple smoke bombs, so I should be able to avoid any random encounters. Okay. Based on the light source, I guess there's probably an opening behind the waterfall, leading out--
Oh, god dammit. I know where I am.
I use my Arctic Wind on the water right at the base of the waterfall, where the opening is presumably right behind, and where there is an 80% chance a giant octopus is hiding.
The other 20% is that the giant octopus is hiding ten feet to the left, because you moved it just to screw with me.

And I didn't even mention any waggling tentacles! :D Locke, you know FF too well. Next game: New universe.

author=DudesoftYeah, I know. I'm a disgusting human being who's probably played most of these games at least five times. I will promise not to abuse my metaknowledge any more.

To keep the explanation in character, let's say Locke as been in enough dungeons to know where to expect a boss fight. He is a treasure hunter, after all.
"Well, we've talked to Arthur. Can we finally get out of this dumb desert now?"
I drag the Drunken Arthur back to the Desert Prison with me.

Alright so figuring out skills now then, time for some thinking.
First of all here is my idea on what the skill system seems to be based what has been said.
We choose skills for our class which then go to taking up skill slots.
We then have the ability to swap out these skills as some kind of item to replace them with other skills if we somehow acquire them.
Now for the questions on that I can think of to do with skills.
1. Which games can we choose skills from?
2. How can we can get higher level skills? for example going from Fire to Fira, Firaga, and Firaja.
3. What happens to our skills when we change class? are they just dequiped and are unable to be requiped?
4. When can we swap our skills for others that we have?
5. How many skills can we choose from our class?
7. How would non-class based skills fit in? like the bare hands passive I just got.
8. How do we find out our other stats like attack and skill power? and the random ranges in skills like the Quake skill I just got?
9. Is there any way for me to turn back into a human? and if not what do I do with all my equipment?
10.Is the scorpion tail an actual scorpion tail?
That's all I can think of at the moment and the last two are more me specific but it should help work out most of the details in the skill system.

Now for the questions on that I can think of to do with skills.
1. Which games can we choose skills from?
-You may pick from any FF with your current Job Class. However, games like FF2,6,78,10,12... Are generally off-limit, because there are no jobs in those games. FF13 is special, but you guys haven't found stuff like that yet.

2. How can we can get higher level skills? for example going from Fire to Fira, Firaga, and Firaja.
If anyone noticed, Zeuzio has been learning HP+ passive abilities. The same thing I will say about Active as I will for Passive.
You need to start at the lowest level of that spell and proceed to higher spell levels. Each higher level spell is a separate spell.

3. What happens to our skills when we change class? are they just dequiped and are unable to be requiped?
When you change class, your skills will be blank.
Here's how it should work, for ease of group progression:
When Character A is a Black Mage and he gains Fire, and Ice: it is added to the group Job Class database (the OP, which I now realise I've been very relaxed (read: lazy) with).
That way, when you change class, you are privy to the previous found spells or learn new ones. (I should have thought of this earlier. It makes Job Class trading sense. You gain a wider skill pool.)
author=xavion
4. When can we swap our skills for others that we have?
Outside of battle. Just like FF, you cannot access the menu in battle. You can swap equipment without wasting a turn though, like early FF's.
author=xavion
5. How many skills can we choose from our class?
As many as you can to fill your Skill Slots. If you pick a skill someone has previously learned, that counts as a choice.
author=xavion
7. How would non-class based skills fit in? like the bare hands passive I just got.
Passive Skills are a different brand of candy. Because of the overwhelming narrow fit of some FF passives to Job Class mixes, I decided to let you pick any passive skill from any FF. however, if there is a value attached, for instance HP+80% you will need to pick the lowest HP+ skill of that skill line. I also encourage you to continue linking to the FF Wiki for skills so that A, I know they're real, and B, I know what I'm dealing with.
author=xavion
8. How do we find out our other stats like attack and skill power? and the random ranges in skills like the Quake skill I just got?
Attack and Skill Power are panels you can find on your License Board, and will be listed under 'License Stats' (...iirc) in the Main Menu.
Those will be the base value.
As for Random, ( or RND ) these are all 1-100 random number generator.
Also, note that Quake is a temporary skill in your Duke form. You have not learned it as a Black Magic spell.
author=xavion
9. Is there any way for me to turn back into a human? and if not what do I do with all my equipment?
Yes. I will explain how your powers of transformation and such work very soon. Next Big Post, probably...
author=xavion
10.Is the scorpion tail an actual scorpion tail?
No, it's a whip that stings like a mother fu---
Anyway... Any further questions? This is a good time to iron out any wrinkles in my
So our base attack and skill power are 0?
For choosing skills what's to stop from doing something like choosing Stop(I), Break(V), Flare(V), and Mirror(4HoL) to become an unstoppable killing machine of destruction since their all the lowest version of their spell and a usable by a black mage class. With retaining skills from previous users, does it include their upgraded forms? and with my blue magics can I just swap out the ones I don't use as I learn more?
I'll take those mentioned skills if possible by the way.
