WHAT IS UP WITH ALL THE NAMES PEOPLE COME UP WITH FOR THEIR GAMES?
Posts
I'm all for creativity. I LIKE it when people can come up with something unique.
But crap on a cracker, why do so many people use whimsical names? I'd understand if the name really had releavnce to the story -- like if you named a game "Nosferatu Atal" and that meant "The Hero's quest" in the game's native people's language -- it has a backstory, and a legitimate reason WHY it has such an unusual name -- it also calls people to it.
What I don't get? When games are called "Fantasical Wiplacia" for NO REASON. No backstory. No interesting quest -- the creator called it that because they "thought it would be cool". I mean, seriously, if I see another game with the words "Sliver" or "Wing" or "Emerald" or "Slash" or "WOLF" without much purpose, I'm going to lose it.
But then again, people have their own right to name their creations.

Sometimes people think it's better to have an attention-catching title than for the title to be the most appropriate for their work. Or it can be an artistic statement.
I have a friend who wants to write a Mozartian symphonic piece and name it the most vulgar title she can think of.
I, however, always try to make my game titles appropriate to the game without them being boring, which can be difficult depending on how developed the story is, and how well it is geared towards a not-dull title.
It's a balance.

I GET balance. Balance is good. Balance keeps people interested with something cool, but something that will probably pleasantly surprise them at some point. But Coming up with something random, in my opinion, is only cool if it has a reason. But maybe It's the insane name that IS the beauty to it?
Though I understand that it can be hard to find "That Perfect Name". I'll work for DAYS trying to come up with the name of a story, or something. But it's always worth it in the end when YOUR mind is at rest.
One of the illustrators I worked for wanted to name her book something totally outrageous -- the name sounded really similar to a classic book's sequel(think "21,000 Leagues Under the Sea" instead of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea). Now it wasn't my job to say anything, and I wasn't going to correct the woman because I'm under her pay-roll, but I just had to ask her "Why?" She said that it was totally original...
How? =_="
I'd rather ask why protagonists tend to have fucked up names such as Zuggablargh.
I always look up some names (and their meaning, I don't want a character whose name means "steampunk grass dildo")

This is something I don't get either. Honestly, especially with JRPGs, an odd, nonsensical name tends to make me feel like the game itself is generic. Simplicity, for me, is the key to naming things. Short, to the point, and only a syllables.
And while I know there's a limit to how many original, simple names people can come up with, it doesn't change the fact that some games just sound ridiculous when you say their name aloud.

Not every game will be all vanilla with your preferences. Get over it maybe? I mean, it may annoy me when I play a game and it has the stereotypical and overused name Yuri or something like that, but it doesn't enrage me into ranting about it. Also, from my small amount of experience, you can get a hint of the quality of the game from it's title alone. So something like "Dancing Rainbow Monkeys 14", you can kind of tell that is might not be great. Of course you should always check it out, (and later find out that it is just a joke game made for some contest that you were hardly involved in.)

I agree. Again, I get it when it's the types of names the natives in said fictional country have, but EVERYONE has to have that type of name, and the strangeness of character names needs to be balanced with the strangeness of the names of creatures and the game's name. You can't have Zuggablargh(LOL @ "steampunk grass dildo" XD) as the main character's name, then have the local smith's name Carey.

Ikr? Read your title and names to yourself -- if you can't see people actually saying this in real life, and if you feel that you're embarrassed or have to defend the names to other people, something's gotta change. I just think it's not that hard to get a second opinion from someone unbiased. And simple, unique names CAN be hard to come up with, but short names can be just as eye-catching.
I think its funny though how even the short ones can sound like stripper names. XD The average programmer: "I'm gonna name my game 'Mistyque' after that chick I met in a bar last night!" :D
I am going to use old Stoner's names, and I want you to rate their names based on how appropriate they are. Probably 1-10 (appropriate, not at all) Then I want feedback on how you think the names are balanced:
1. Abraxas
2. Savyon
3. Justin
4. Jade
5. Landon
6. Rose
7. Vesta
8. Sis
9. Ryuu
10. Cameron
11. Chloe
12. Aven
13. Rio
14. Chien
15. Aceline
16. Rita
17. Keiji
18. Max
19. Maris
I know that's a lot. (Note: Over half of these are guests or characters you have temporarily.)
Yes, some names are ridiculous in games, but really, you guys are using really bad examples I barely even hear of in any game.

Some of these were kind of hard to do, but I judge based on the era/situation of the game. I'm no pro, but you asked for my opinion, so don't be angry XP
1. Abraxas – This depends on the type of game you have. If its set in mideivel times or in space, then sure. (5)(for mutual)
2. Savyon – Eeeeh... I could see this in a magical JRPG genre. Pretty unique, not over-the top.(7)
3. Justin – A mutual name for almost any genre(5)
4. Jade -- This is almost mutual(5)
5. Landon – Mutual(5)
6. Rose – Mutual or pretty good for a dating RPG(7)
7. Vesta – That’s a name from Harvest Moon, so I’m slightly biased XD But mutual. (5)
8. Sis – Ahhh.... this is a hard one. It sounds more like a nickname, so it could be mutual. (5)
9. Ryuu – This is a common Japanese name, but not common in the way that its ridiculously overused, but common the way that Joe is a common American name – Common for the culture. (5)
10. Cameron – Mutual (5)
11. Chloe – (5)
12. Aven – This is a pretty good one... (8)
13. Rio –Same as Ryuu(though its spelt differently from the Japanese spelling) (5)
14. Chien – I think the spelling is what makes this one over-the-top. But I can’t really judge it because it depends on how the other character’s names are like.
15. Aceline – Mutual (5)
16. Rita – Mutual (5)
17. Keiji -- Kinda sounds like a teacher or shop-owner. (5)
18. Max -- Mutual (5)
19. Maris – (5)
If you’re using all of these in the same game, the fact that most of them are mutual is a good thing :D That means almost none of them are more attention grabbing than the others. You’d have to provide some sort of special condition for those that have anything above or below five, though, like if Aven was the main char(sounds like a good hero’s name :D) or if Abraxas was the main baddie, and if Savyon was a wizard. Aceline sounds like some sort of nymph, but she’s about mutual.
I'm baffled as to why you would call Aceline a "mutual" name.
But yeah I have to say I am pretty baffled at the naming scheme most indie rpgs use. Like someone just flips open a dictionary and sees Dragon and then flips a few pages back and sees Destiny. Whenever I see one of these ridiculously generic names or anything with Final in it I just file that project under "Do not investigate ever."

True... you'd probably NEVER find some chick named Aceline in real life XD
And yeah, that's what I keep saying -_- someone should make an "Unoriginal 'Cool' Name Generator". You can mix and match words to make the best title names and char names.
In fact...
"Gather 'round children! Use this helpful guide to ensure your game NEVER gets players! :D"
"Mix any of the following endings to any of your game titles to get the PERFECT names:
-Dragon
-Silver
-Crystal
-Destiny
-Dragoon
-Wing(s_
-Luminant
-Radiant
-Lion
-Claw
-Fantastic
-Thunderbolt
-Raven
-Eagle
-Falcon
-Wolf
-Fantasmagoria
-Garden
-Eden
-Forever
-Lost
-Princess/Prince
-Metronome... the list goes on! :D"
It's been done. Several times, in fact. (And I think there is one on these forums somewhere from like a year or so ago)
But, to be honest, I'd play Realm of Heroes over Nosferatu Atal, because a name should be indicative of its content (and Nosferatu Atal sounds like pretentious schlock and Realm of Heroes sounds like some good ol' RPG romp). TO each his own, I guess?
The name of a game isn't really that big of a deal.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Guys I have a game named The UnOfficial SquareSoft Multi-User Dungeon, I think you are all winners when it comes to naming things. I exist solely to make you feel better about yourself.
