So i have heard from many people that Secret of Mana is one of the best classic snes rpgs to play. however, the few times i've attempted to play it i've not really been able to get into it. that may or may not change today, as Shanghai Pete is forcing me to sit down and play through it, live on the internet.

also, what do you guys think of secret of mana? is it awesome? any protips?
I would say that Secret of Mana is an excellent game. The dialog and story and completely awful and should be ignored.
I actually just bought SoM for virtual console after having not played it in about ten years. It is a lot of fun to play.
It gets difficult fast though, so make sure to kill all enemies you come across to keep your level reasonable.
yeah, we're playing on virtual console. right on.
I have fond memories playing Secret of Mana as a kid. It was a really fun action RPG. Made me wish I had a multitap to I could play co-op (and friends). (When you get a orb upgraded or whatever, go to an inn, spam the chick's healing spells until she runs out of MP, rest, repeat until her spells level up)

I loved playing SoM with my brother as a kid. Fond memories.

It probably hasn't aged as well as other titles from that era, but I'd still say it's a great game.
I wasn't that into playing it, either. :p
But yea, same, my sister made me play it.

It's not bad tho, yea. I actually rly enjoyed it. :))
The battles were especially fun, oh my god.. But the ally AI can be total crap + story.

It was awesome for the time but it hasn't aged particularly well. Chrono Trigger and Terranigma on the other hand...

SoM is an awesome game. I played it all the time as a kid. I never really noticed how bad some of the dialog was at the time until I played it again recently. Still a fun game though with great music.

I actually agree with Trihan on this. While I loved the game as a kid and I'll never forget that love, SoM's mechanics have not proven the test of time for me. The attack and charge meters aren't my favorite. The option to attack before 100% is worthless and charging is a lot of time spent just holding down a button. Seiken Densetsu 3's mechanics are much more engaging, rewarding aggressive play with an opportunity to perform an instantaneous and powerful special attack. Rather than giving you a meter at the edge of the screen to monitor, the game restricts action until your attack is ready and gives you visual feedback on the character sprite itself so you don't have to monitor the HUD as much.

yeah yeah yeah. SoM's entire combat system is a clunky disaster. It takes a great deal of getting used to and is most of the reason I haven't continued playing in my past attempts.

However, after playing through most of the game over the past few days, i will say that once i got past the combat problems, the game is pretty fun in a glitchy, clumsy-as-hell kind of way. The monster design is cool (with a few glaring exceptions*), the whole nonsensical square soft scifi/ fantasy vibe is fun as always, even through the plot is basically nonexistent, and the multiplayer thing is a very nice touch.

That microwaved horrorshow jehk thing in his cave of lies that sends you all over the world for no reason like five times is one of my new personal villians.

we're pretty much at the end, we'll prolly finish today.

(we made use of the use-up-the-girl's-mp-before-sleeping protip, thanks kentona!)

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Captain Duck is the best enemy, you are a horrible person for saying otherwise.

I find the charge attacks really satisfying, actually. And the game makes pretty good use of them by creating bosses that go in and out of modes where they can't take damage. It's admittedly super annoying when Popoi and Purim both attack a split second before you for 25 damage each, and so your 200 damage attack fizzles out because the buffer is full. (Actually I'm pretty sure it doesn't fizzle out, it still hits, the game just doesn't show the damage numbers for more than two attacks at a time. But it's still unsatisfying.)

I bought this game for my iPod recently. The ring menu works fantastic with the touch screen; the combat predictably doesn't. I actually got a game over against Wall Face, because I kept accidentally running away instead of attacking, and the timer ran out and he smooshed me.
Uck, I'm stuck at Wall Face right now. You have got to hit him in just the right place or it doesn't count.
I like the charge system too, but the ally AI is awful awful and should never be allowed to charge.
I freaking hate how the allys get stuck behind structures and you have to run back for them. So bad...

It's not the placement that's picky, it's the timing. You have to hit him when his middle eye is open.

This thread reminded me I should finish the Secret of Mana missions for UOSSMUD. That shit's been on hiatus forever. Right now it only goes up through Wall Face, then a huge chunk of the game doesn't have any missions until you get to Southtown. Missions will never be done, but half the mana seeds being missing is a little lame. But I don't honestly like Secret of Mana enough to really care that much, at least not compared to other Squaresoft games of the 90s.

We need some Terranigma love up in here. :(

You need to cast the girl's spells on a combat-able map, you only get 1/2 the gains in a town/inn. Best place is right outside the Water Palace.

This is a Secret of Mana thread. Nobody is stopping you from making a Terranigma thread.
I remember having fun with SoM, but am I alone in liking Secret of Evermore better? Everything cool about SoM plus a more interesting magic system and tougher bosses. Plus I really liked the silly plot and dialogue from the main character.
I love SoM, I still play it every now and then, that is actually one of the few things I still have from my childhood.

Not at all. I liked Evermore waaay better. But SoM was one of my first games.

Yes, Secret of Evermore is a game that deserves more love! It’s everything good about Mana, but with a plot you can actually follow and a unique magic system that I don’t think anyone has tried to duplicate yet. Plus it has a rather awesome, but under-looked soundtrack by Jeremy Soles (Aka the guy who dose the music for the Elder scrolls games).
