GAMES WE NEED TO GET OVER
Posts
Using the term "get over" is a misappropriation. Really what you're talking about is hype. Time has codified an oeuvre of classics that transcend what they are and stand as more exemplar of successful or transitional periods in game design.
For example, FF1 may be seen as a dumb cliche game from our perspective, but it is culturally significant for basically creating the tropes/genre of what an RPG is. Chrono Trigger was/is hailed as a masterpiece because it took the RPG and exacerbated its forms into something that at its time had never been synthesized in such a way before.
FF7 took RPGs into the realm of 3D in an important way that mirrors what OoT did for the zelda series. (Although I still think FF6>FF7) To translate a successful 2d game (LttP, Mario) into OoT and Mario 64, and get it 'right' on the first try is a remarkable feat that deserves the celebration that those games received.
You're seeing time as something that pushes forward, and forces us to 'forget' old games, or to 'get over' them. In reality, it are these games that transcend time and came about due to very specific set of circumstances that should be considered as masterpieces.
Another example, tetris came out decades ago, but a modern generation can pick it up and easily get addicted, it's not specific to any one time or age set, talk about good game design!

I was being sarcastic about Tetris, it's actually the best game ever made. But I still hate it. And love it, at the same time.
I know it was a joke but regardless Tetris is a game that was made in soviet russia but still is exempt from most societal circumstances/time periods.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

qft and all that, although I'd say that FF7 did an incredible job too and (probably as would be logical) had a lot more of the spirit of previous FF titles than what would come next in the franchise's further iterations (although yes, it was already creeping in, but you could say that about 6 also to a lesser extent).

There are only one liners, no real discussions, I forgot I was at RMN.
haha I don't get why so many people expect serious discussion here. It's probably the same reason some people come here to do everything BUT make games.
People need to get over monopoly. It is old, boring, and last freaking forever, and yet people still insist that I play it.

Don't play with house rules. Oh my god, never play Monopoly with house rules. No free parking, no loans, no nothing. Every house rule meant to make the game "less meeeeeeaaaaan :(" makes the game take longer.
Monopoly is a mean, aggressive game. The goal is to competitors out of business.

You're right. "Get over" was just used for lack of a better word. What I was really talking about was the way that we will look at classic games, and expect the newer ones to basically be remakes with better graphics (case point; OOT and FF7). I'm not suggesting these are bad games at all. But we shouldn't grab the pitchforks when the series decides to try something new.

I don't think Chrono Trigger was very good, nor do I think there's much to learn from it.
that explains a lot
....Yeah, I'm getting depressed too. Come on, Chrono Trigger was awesome!
I guess, for some of these, tastes have just changed; players don't care for linear RPGs much anymore, instead preferring open world resource-driven MMO-like experiences. I'm not a fan of open-world games, as I think they waste a lot of time, but who am I to stand in the way of progress?
(Good thing I don't make games for money!)

This. One night we started playing from 6pm to 3am and we still hadn't finished. I was bored the entire time. Hate that game.
Wish people would just get over the getting over games thing.

I hear that there's an official rule that no one ever uses that severely decreases the playing time. The problem with Monopoly is that no one ever bothers to actually read or follow the rules.
(that being said it's still not a great game)
Drunk Monopoly is awesome. Y'know when you get a bunch of mates over to play and apply drinking rules to the game. If you go to jail finish what you're drinking or take a shot, etc.
The harder part is when it's going on for a while just trying to stay focused on the game haha. Good times.
I'm actually going to agree with whoever said Final Fantasy Versus XIII.. If anyone did. Game doesn't look that great, bland environments and as much as I enjoy KH gameplay, in a serious setting it just doesn't seem right.
Also the new Devil May Cry.. SHUT UP about Dantes new look! They gameplay looks great and the character of Dante seems to be in tact, what's the big deal. I didn't know so many people played games based on how the main character looks like.
