YOU LET'S PLAYERS ARE DOING IT WRONG

RPGs are not meant to be recorded being played because they look so damn dull
Try screenshot lets playing them instead

I categorically deny this. I'm done an LP of Morrowind (which was not great, but it wasn't the worst LP I've done either), and I've seen good LPs of lots of RPGs. Slowflake did an excellent Pokemon SoulSilver. NintendoCapriSun did a grat LP of FFX. Even the so called 'famously un-LPable' Phoenix Wright was LP'ed very well by ScottishDuck.
RPGs can be dull if the LP'er is dull. You have to really have to make your own material and make the game exciting. And if the LP'er is good, the results are still interesting.
Maybe the problem is that they're looking at dull people playing dull games.

Seeing the players do a let's play, their play styles and the decisions they make on the go actually helps developers know what they did wrong and what parts they did right. That and I actually watch Let's plays of commercial games rather than reading reviews or whatever. If I like the flow, I BUY IT.
This is all very subjective.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney? LoL, I loved the let's plays on that game :3

I never knew that about Ace Attorney, huh. Screenshot play through' aren't a bad idea for Rpg Maker games, seems more fitting. I read an A Blurred Line one once, was pretty good.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

If you think RPGs are dull
you're probably on the wrong site
That said this quote from the thing you linked has some truth to it:
"Action is hard to capture in screenshots, so the more action-y your game is, the better suited it is for a video let's play. On the flipside, decision making can't be captured on film but rather needs to be explained. In a screenshot let's play, you have a virtually infinite amount of time to explain your thought processes to the audience as they see them in screenshot form."
But... I dunno, if you can't explain your thought processes in the time it takes you to perform the actions, then... perform them slower or keep explaining afterward or something, because I still prefer video universally

I agree with Gamesfreak, rpgs are dull when someone runs through them (LPs, LTs) most of the time. Rpgs are, I guess, made to play slowly, carefully, and that is NOT spectacular. They're somewhat of a personal experience : 1) because they're not professional and thus 2) they're enjoyability depends a lot on the imagination and involvment of the player.
I think Let's Plays generally are boring. However I've found a few variants that work fairly well. One is the video "review/impressions" format (you know like TotalBiscuit's WTF is) where you play a section and show off what the game can and cannot do. The other is having multiple hosts making it more like an audio podcast that relates to what's happening on screen but you can often make sense of it without actually watching. (A show called "Spoiler Warning" does this and have done a fair amount of RPGs)
Copious amounts of editing out the boring shit obviously also helps. Obviously.
Of course I'm one of those people that balk at the suggestion I have to pay attention to a 20+ minute video of someone playing a game.

HCBailly's billion (actually 55,682) subscribers would like to talk to you.
Although with some RM games perhaps you may have a point. Although on the other hand sometimes the hilarity and reactions that ensue when somebody plays something that has been created by an amateur/hobbyist are too fun to miss and harder to convey in text.. It's a "you had to be there" thing and video allows for that.
There are plenty of things that "let's play"-ers get wrong but I don't think format choice is one of them. Most of the time it's the person playing the game that determines whether or not the LP is good or not (assuming interest/potential for interest in the game being played is already sufficient). A lot of people who LP are absolutely awful.

You can combine the two!

Screenshot LPs are boring. I honestly just hit page down the whole way, stopping only to look at whatever screenshots look interesting.
Videos are much better because they expose you to the personality of the LPer, and they're able to convey their emotions and thoughts to a greater extent. There's also little room for misinterpretation on the part of the viewer (while it can be pretty easy at times to misinterpret something that a person writes).

Also some people talk funny. I like Craze's LP's because he literally rips every function of the game apart, dissecting things one by one, leaving just the shreds of the game. It's utterly fantastic. Legionwood got a fair battering.
Also, I had my game Let's Played by that NicoB guy. He's fantastic, and he really pointed out all the fun/boring parts of my game, and helped me be a better developer. So there's that intrinsic fun value for the viewer, but also the critical standpoint of the developer, having valuable feedback of your games.

I like text-AARs. Though they don't work for every kind of game they are perfect for any kind of game that is slightly different for every player. There's only so much AARing you can do with a Final Fantasy game but the possibilities are huge for open games like Dwarf Fortress, Football Manager or Crusader Kings.
Of course I suppose AARs aren't LPs? Or how does that distinction work?

l think the LT movement is doin' it wrong. just not for the reasons the OP listed.
What I like about LPs and LTs is that I can throw them in the background while working.
I cannot do this with screenshot LPs. Though they have their place.

The only LT I would consider watching is one about our short game-making contests. Hint! Hint!
Otherwise, I'd rather just play it myself.
Maybe if I were confined to a hospital bed...

I find it funny that this is coming from someone who requested a video LP of his game from me only a few months ago.
