YOU LET'S PLAYERS ARE DOING IT WRONG

Cave Dog, would you happen to be a former GWer by chance?
If you're going to LP, I would suggest choosing a game you know you have a lot to say about. That way you don't have to constantly invent things to say. Also, play your strengths. Pick a commentary style that fits you rather than trying to emulate other let's players.

The LP should be the first time playing through the game. I would agree that if it's a LP of a commercial game then the LPer should know the game inside and out, give tips, and commentary about secret stuff like a video walkthrough. What LP's are in the RM community are not nor should they try to be a video walkthrough.

That wouldn't be called a LP. It would be called a LT (as I learned in the RMN community), because you're trying out a game for the first time.

But then again, what exactly is the difference between a LP and a LT in RMN aspect? What I know is that LP is playing a game that you have already played before, whereas LT isn't. But is that really what it is??
The idea behind LT wasn't just to try out a game for the first time, it was more to give the creator feedback. By recording the game while playing it for the first time, the creator get to see how it is to play the game when one don't have the knowledge of it that the creator has.

The purpose of a LP is to entertain the viewer and not necessarily to give the creator feedback.

Of course, it's all good if an LT is entertaining or an LP ends up giving the creator some useful feedback.
At first the LT was just some recordings of a game until the player gave up, I liked them because it was nice to see RM have a youtube presence but now they seem obnoxious and not worth watching. Might be time for a little EVOLUTION don't you think?

i know a lot about this dumb hobby that i despise but ultimately it comes down to this ultimate truth:
I know where you're coming from- I really do, but here's the problem.
Other people enjoy those videos.

You can't call it dumb, wrong, and/or bad when other people like it.
Just move on and watch/make things you enjoy. That, or explain your opinions without getting nasty.
We don't need flame wars.

Man if we're going to use the consensus to validate something I have to wonder WHY ISNT THE ENTIRE WORLD LIKING these. Despite the venom, Cave Dog is right. If you must do a long RPG video, at least put effort into the commentary, editing, analysis, anything to put more thought into it. There's more than one way to play through an RM game btw, but 1000ish people seem to be content with one thing so just hit record and hope everything goes well!

one style of LP is to record gameplay, then add in post scripted commentary to explain what's happening in the game without the ums and uhhs. I'm curious to see an RM lp that does the same.

That's something that I've been tempted to do.

I hate that idea for RM* games. The LT movement was, at its core, about nitpicking the fuck out of games. (Well, okay, that's what my part of the LT movement was.) It's much, much easier to do that in the moment. I wouldn't be able to effectively tear something apart if I was looking at it again later, and I honestly don't think many RM* games that truly need an LT are going to be very fun to go over again. We're not getting paid, after all.*

As for actual LPs, I have no problem with that style.

*I will constructively LT/LP any game for money. If it's a commercial game the price of the game would be included in the cost of me bitching eternally.

How much is your insight worth?

I'm leaning towards video reviews if I want to script my thoughts on a game.
What's the point of LPs? I can play games with my own hands...

Most people who watch soccer are capable of kicking a ball with their own feet. There is no universal point behind let's plays, it's just so that those who watch them enjoy them.

Dubai's weight in platinum

Base $20 + $10/hour over the three-hour mark? So $20 for a three-hour game, $50 for a six-hour game. Possibly more for a game that's of extreme length (25+ hours).

...not that I think that there would actually be a market for this, but, well, money would get a full play-through by a guy who has a nice voice, has experience, and has the proper recording equipment. That's way more than you could ask from some random folks LTing your game/LPing any other game.

Deacon, it's usually (for me) because I like the LP author's opinions and am interested in what they know or feel about the game. Me LPing an early FF game might be amusing, but Brickroad could tell you the ins and outs of every detail.
For me it's that same reason as I look up reviews after playing a game/watching a movie/reading a book - wanting to know what others thought/felt about games/movies/books that I liked and reliving the experience through them without having to replay/rewatch/reread the game/movie/book again. That or I like the style of the LPer and put them in the background to listen to/watch as I do shit.
