I'd like to see a forum-made game.

RpgRevolution is doing one, I was wondering if we could too.

in fact i just had an epiphany on how this could go about, it could be like the LaL system to where each has his/her own character/scenario and at the end you can create a custom party and face the final dungeon/boss, no telling what kind of awesomeness would come from that. :P
I like a game that shows personality. Something that only that person could have created, like by basing characters on himself or his friends. Or having a story that involves things that may be related to things that happened in the creator's life. Or a story that involves things that are important to the creator. I appreciate personal touches like those, makes it more fun and interesting to me than playing a game that is trying to be all good and professional-like. Not saying that those games are bad. Far from it even, they just don't have the same appeal to me. They feel more generic to me, and tend to take themselves too serious (not necessarily a bad thing, but it makes spotting small mistakes really bad).

Try looking in Welp! Welp!? There's, like, three games that are active on those forums. Unless you're talking about something else?
I mean on the entire forum scale. Like, pretty much everyone comes up with a game idea and just inserts all the scripts and code they want.

Or something. Also, CTB, since it got talked about in another thread.

This is the #1 advantage that everyone here has over a massive, mainstream game. You can make games about anything & everything, including things that everyone can relate to but a multimillion project won't touch. You don't have to make your games all about edgy stuff like sex or poop or whatever, but you can make them about stuff you personally care about. You can hit a niche. You can make a game show off your personality - something that a mainstream game made by x100 people will never be able to do. This is easily the first thing I pick up on from solo/small-team projects and it's one of my favorite aspects of them - learning about devs via their games.

In the same vein, rather than try and copy the art, style and gameplay from a project 1000 times bigger than yours, focus on something weird, unique, different. You are allowed to do anything! Make an RPG without towns, or items, or battles, or whatever!

Big budgets have rules, you don't; use that to your advantage.

EDIT: Also I love CTB.
CTB is always cool.
I wanna see a Resident Evil CTB.
a complete game made by myself that is at least one hour long *sigh*.
one day.
Just make a 10min game and add random content generation -shot-

I agree with everything you said except for this. Sexy poopy games for everyone!

Fan games can be good. They aren't always, though. I've experienced a higher percentage of crap fan games than not, but you should at least be open to the idea. At least a little?

When I see a game like that, though (particularly one that uses mainly not original assets), I hold it to a higher quality standard. They didn't have to make all the resources, and depending on the engine they might not have had to code a lot of the systems. So, the story, atmosphere, presentation, (partially) gameplay, balance, etc. better be spot on. What else did the game maker actually have to do?

lotta games there, there an RPG amongst them?
I don't see anything wrong with fan games, I mean I'm not going to play them but if you're passionate enough about a series to emulate it: I can respect that. I also think fan games are the only time that ripping off commercial art is good idea.

In any other indie title I'd rather see RTP than stolen content. Like my project, I'm not a spriter. I can edit "ok" with a lot of effort but if I tried to create totally custom graphics on my own it would take forever and I wouldn't enjoy it. I'd rather use the RTP that's available and see what I can do with other effects (such as overlays and mapping) to make my game visually unique despite the limitations.

I forgot and I hate to say this but, Make a freakin' rail shooter like Starfox!
It might be good for a fan-game and might rival Pengui. That's what I think...
I actually liked Inuyasha Tamashi. As fan games go, it was fairly well done, they got the mechanics (including sensing stuff outside battle) to work, and they had some decent visual scenes to simulate animation.

If you had a fangame, it'd have to be more like that.

I would like to see an action RPG, like Alundra (See how
I didn't say Zelda.)

Alundra is probably one of the funnest, and most difficult,
rpgs I have played for the PSone. Its combination of
puzzles, battles, and story are epic. And its actually
better told than a lot of Zelda games (like Twilight Princess.)
well i dunno that. :P but yeah an action/rpg like that would be cool to see, that is if there isnt one completed already :)
At one point, I tried to design a platform RPG (well technically, it was Ninja Gaiden RPG), that used alot of vertical dimension to jump from lower to higher platforms with some sort of timer, and making a bonus after each stage, that would earn you exp and money based on time left, enemies defeated, etc. It seemed fun enough, but I got annoyed with the spatial planning. And an annoying amount of jump blocks/layers so you wouldn't be able to jump to strange places.

I think the idea would be cool, after a fashion, but I'd want cool things in there, like puzzle solving using moved objects to form platforms and stuff. Or gaining skills/tools as you go, that could be swapped out.
