QUESTIONS ABOUT RPG MAKER XP AND VX ACE
Posts
OK, this my very first thread. I'm new here as of today 6/26/13. Hello everyone, you can just call me Dragon. I'm a aspiring Game Designer and I'm trying to go freelance aka Indie. I founded ShadowSphere Entertainment and am a one-man team. While searching the web i stumbled upon rpg maker. I want to buy the software but I'm concern about which to buy.
My question is focused on the battle systems and I been Youtubing vids to check out the battle systems for both xp and vx ace. I like to buy the best of the rpg maker software. My question is which software has sideview battles? Like FF style where both enemy and character sprites are shown, I don't like the front view. I'm mostly interested in vx ace. If I get vx ace can I have sideview battle script? PM me here or at Dragonwingz1@aim.com and I need help will concept art and in-game artwork. Any help is welcome, thank you.

also how do i buy the software. i see it's available on amazon but i never used that before. also i tried to buy off rpgmaker website buy it charged me over $100 for both vx ace and vx 1.0, do i need both of those?
No, get only VX Ace. It's VX with improved features. Why would you even use two makers to make one game anyway? Besides, VX Ace, as the newest version, is the one getting a lot of new scripts developed for it right now. XP's map editor is generally considered to be the best, but VX Ace beats it in everything else.
The only RPG Maker that has side view battles by default is 2003, but there's no reason to use a horribly outdated 10 year old program that doesn't even have script functionality.
There are some side view battle scripts already made for you here, here and here, though setting up your animations as you want them can be a bit of work. See which one of them suits you best.
Also, if you're patient, you may catch a Steam sale. That's how I got my VX Ace.
P.S. - You mean aspiring, not inspiring.

Thanks lol. I hope to count on you for any further tips and advice later on. I am thinking in favor of buying VX Ace. I see you got 10 awards apparently, congrats. I will probably buy the software thru RPG Maker's website cause I never used Amazon before.
What 10 awards to do you get? We also sell RPG Maker VX Ace through the store here at RMN: http://rpgmaker.net/store/
If you buy through there and tell me about it, I can get you your donation achievement (1000ms + 50mb lockerspace), no ads and a permanent 10% discount for all future affiliate sales.
Also, another slick battle system is here: http://symphonyan.org/battle-symphony-introduction/#manual
Also also, moving this to Help & Requests

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Neither program inherently has side-view battles, but both programs support importing scripts created by other users to add features to your game, and people have made scripts for both RPG Makers that can give you side-view battle systems that you have a great deal of control over.
For RMXP you can get a set of scripts called Atoa's Chrono Trigger Battle System (which has side-view and a number of other options in addition to the Chrono Trigger battle style), and for RMVXAce you can get a set of scripts called Battle Engine Symphony. There's also a set of scripts called Tankentai that works with both engines for a different, somewhat simpler version of side-view battles. There are also probably like thirty others.
Main difference between RMXP and RMVXAce is that you'll have an easier time making nice looking areas in RMXP, but you'll have a harder time doing almost everything else (gameplay, battles, cut scenes) and will need to use scripts for some things that Ace can do with just a few clicks. So if you're not at all comfortable with figuring out how scripting works, I would say grab Ace. If you have a little bit of programming experience and would like a slightly easier time with graphics, grab XP. If you don't know enough to answer those questions yet, grab Ace, because it's easier to use.
I use RMXP, but the vast majority of people use Ace, so you'll have an easier time getting help from other users if you use Ace. More people to ask!

WOW Kentona wrote on my Thread awesome!!
Thanks for the information everyone, I appreciate the friendly advice and tips of the traee lol.
On a side note, is the any stores that I can go to offline that sell RPG Maker software? I ask because I don't own a credit card nor have online billing services like PayPal. I never used Amazon before neither. I prefer to use cash.

This forum topic on RPG Maker Web suggests that they do actually sell boxed copies, but apparently only on amazon.com and rpgmakerweb.com, not in local stores. (Still, maybe send a message to the moderator who originally posted that topic, or call their support number, and ask to make sure.)
You won't get far in life without a debit card. Not many places accept cash any more. I can't remember the last time I bought something other than food or gas from a store that even accepted cash. It was surely months ago, if not years ago.
You can just make a Paypal account for free though. They don't charge fees or anything. Can link it straight to your checking account, even if for some reason you are too lazy to go get a free debit card from your bank...

Ouch "im lazy eh". It's not that I'm lazy, I just don't like credit or debit cards. I don't trust banks with my money. I prefer to use cash cause the green is physically there in my hand. No matter how great technology gets, it's never prefect, a few missed 010111s in the programming and I wake up one day broke. It's too easy and convenient for unwanted elements to be able to move and transfer money electronically. Robbers still exist, and they can get access to move money electronically as easy as us honest legit folk. So yea, I prefer to buy the products I want physically so I can see if people try to cheat me ot not; can't see what the desk clerk/counter guy is doing behind that pc screen if you buy online.
You won't get far without a debit card? Besides ATM machines,
I don't know that many places you can buy stuff with an ATM
card in Taiwan. Most transactions here are in cash. My boss
doesn't even write me a cheque, just hands me a wad of cash.
Though if you want to withdraw money to buy stuff I guess
you need a card, but I think you could probably get through
life pretty easily without one even so.
I live in North America lol Land of snitches, robbers and a overrated messed up mentality that using cards is better then cash. When the heck did people start doing things as though we in Yu-gi-oh and everyone now walks around with a deck of cards.
"I play Vista! Has the check balance abitity so I don't lose interest."
IF entertainment is the fundamentals on how business is done I rather we adapt as and to the world of Final Fantasy lol.
Btw Kory. I love your picture, mind if I save image it? I LOVE dragons! Hence my username. Anyway I might end up using Steam or Paypal to get RPG Maker VX Ace.

That image is Nicol Bolas.
He is a character from the MTG universe.
Feel free to Google it, there's many
more images of him.

I always thought it was an artist's rendition of the RPG Maker XP logo.
Lockez lol nice advice but no thanks. I wanna be a Game Designer and that's how it's gonna be. I never say I was afraid of technology, afterall how else am I able to write here, my Dell laptop may only have costed me $50 and it shuts off on me alot due to battery problems but hey, I'm a fighter. Like on WKC2, I've always been known to speak my mind and stand up for what I believe in.
Anyway, I got my new website up and running. www.shadowsphere.webs.com
Thank you guys!

Huh? I've never been to a physical location that didn't accept cash, and I lived in rural NS and Ottawa. Just about every place has a debit machine, but it's an option.
Unless you meant online, because your talking about paypal. Then I'd agree that you won't get far with cash haha

Yeah, I don't buy things in physical stores any more. I bought a pair of shoes about a year ago, and that's probably the only thing except for food and gas I've bought at a counter for the last three years. The internet has made walk-in stores obsolete for everything except everyday necessities and things you really need to physically try out first.
Edit: OK wait no I also bought a car. Same deal as shoes: needed to physically try it out first (though I almost bought one on eBay). I suppose the dealer probably would have let me pay him twelve thousand dollars in cash if I'd asked.
