Breath of Fire VI announced for Mobile Phones

Breath of Fire is one of my favorite, fondest RPG franchises. For a long time after BoF V, many fans assumed that the series was dead after Capcom more or less was silent about it for years. Now, we have...this. I understand that BoF isn't on the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest tier of profitability as far as RPGs go, but this...this I don't understand. This doesn't even really make sense to me from a business perspective. This doesn't even look good, this looks like a Maple Story clone.

Breath of Fire was always relatively niche and 'for the fans'. Why release a low key series on a mobile phone; the fans won't really be interested (as this wasn't what they were asking for), and non fans won't be drawn in. At first I thought 'Okay maybe they just want to appeal to their home audience', but... I was looking around for some Japanese gamers opinions on the subject and the consensus is more or less this;

なんでこんなことすんの?
泣きたくなるわ・

(Translation: Why are they doing this? I want to cry...)

I dunno. If they don't want to risk it by making Breath of Fire VI a shiny new generation game, that's understandable, but even then, there are problems with that; Japanese game industry has had an 'all or nothing' approach to developing games, it either has to be a massive undertaking or not be made at all, which is in contrast to their older model of simply giving bigger IPs a bigger budget, and smaller IPs a smaller one. Nobody really complained back in the day when Breath of Fire III and IV weren't FF VII/VIII level productions, we enjoyed them (and other games) for what they were. Or, nowadays there's the option of making cheaper, easier to develop games on the PSN network or the Wii arcade or whatever. I don't see too much of that either.

It's really depressing how Capcom is treating their IPs, but whatever. But hey, this is news, so I thought I'd share.
i was discussing about this on another forum as well and it seems people are VERY butthurt over this. I don't really understand the problem really. Mobile platforms are changing and we're already getting "real" games on platforms such as iOS.

iOS already got all those DS FF remakes as well as Tactics. Also recently it got KotOR and new XCOM. There's nothing lost in translation with RPGs and strategy games. Touch pad is perfectly fine for such games and frankly i'm happy to get proper new jRPGs as well because i don't have 3DS, only iPad.

Whether we like it or not, it seems that game developers are concentrating their efforts on mobile platforms, which are expanding, rather then the PC and consoles, although hopeful some of them will bring them to browsers using HTML 5 or Unity, which should depend on the platform. In the case of BOF 6, it's a multiplayer online game, that's free to play, which probably means it is probably a freemium game where you have to pay for extra or ad sponsored.

Regarding those older games, they are trying to revive old games to sell them based on the nostalgia factor. And yes those genres are playable when using the touch interface. When it comes to action and platformers it doesn't do as well. BTW, in iOS games are the apps that most people are willing to pay for (although most app downloads are still of free stuff).
whoa whoa whoa hold the phone. KOTOR was released on the iPad? that's huge news! One of the greatest RPGs of all time ported to mobile - that's pretty cool.

...umm, on topic... I haven't played a BoF game since BoF2 on the SNES.
the same i said on the other forum (DmC forum to be precise where i deal with daily capcom hate), if it was fast paced game like a new DMC or Megaman it would be horrible news to hear it comimg to iOS. But for turn-based games it sounds like an odeal platform. Although free to play online game sounds pretty worrying. But i'll wait and see before passing any judgement.

and yea KOTOR is on iPad for like 8 euros, apparently it's really good port too. I'm gonna have a 10 hour flight on monday so i'm considering on buying it.

Yeah, having your finger in the way of action would give back results.

I signed up for the beta of Ultima Forever Quest for Avatar and they recently announced it would come first to iOS which ticked me off, needless to say. The bad thing about online games is that they don't have an offline option to continue playing ...

Also, it seems that WiiU is selling pretty poorly due to lack of quality games.

Making an important console RPG series into a free2play MMO looking game just cheapens the brand. No creative thought process or genuine effort from a team of developers were made. Megaman Xover and Final Fantasy All The Bravest is living proof that there's no careful consideration for a non-ported game. The mobile consumer does not want anything complicated. There will never be any "real games" because the touch pad is actually rather limited when it comes to anything beyond a puzzle game. Many compromises are usually made to "convey" the mechanics better so it just turns into swipe the screen to win gg lol. An IOS consumer will buy Angry Birds RPG over "Breath of Fire what's that?" in a blink of an eye so there's no real loyalty or staying power.

People keep saying "it's a business deal with it" but really it's bad business when no one bothers to take any risk. The battle mechanics will just be rub your face on the screen for Ryu to transform into dragon for 1 dollar. No one considers that the mobile industry will probably pop and these video game companies trying to enter it are just throwing random stuff at it hoping something will compete with Plants VS Angry Birds. Companies like Zynga are just flaking out while EA closed down like several mobile divisions. Idk why anyone would even talk about the mobile industry as here to stay or as a good thing other than providing most people with simple time wasters.
Darken hit the nail on the head. It wouldn't even be so bad if mobile games weren't already mostly universally terrible. I've nothing against the concept of mobile games so much in theory, more like in practice they tend to be objectively, legitimately empty and terrible, and I'm notoriously easy to please.

Mobile games have consistently been sub par with very little exception. If they get good over time, so be it, a good game is a good game, but history has not been kind to mobile games. A solid 90% suck ass. Simple prediction and logic can lead one to assume that putting a major IP on such a volitile, unreliable format is, well, bad. Even Japanese gamers who have had exposure and have played tons more mobile games than Western audiences are going 'but why are you doing this...?" That says something. The mobile phenom will pop eventually if it doesn't somehow become the NEXT THING IN GAMING!!!!111!!11 like everyone says it will.

And it's a mobile social game. Like, are you being for real?
From what I've heard, Ryu and Nina are DLC... Yeah. Take a moment to process that.

Now I'm not saying that it being made to go on mobile devices is a terrible thing - they could do it right. And it helps that it's not being made just for mobile devices - there was PC label plonked in there too, so it may very well be a decent RPG.

But I'm wondering if they're doing the same thing they did with Dragon Quarter - taking a game that should be it's own and putting the Breath of Fire name on it so that it garners sales from the old crowd.
(Now, I don't hate Dragon Quarter, but I don't like it as a continuation to the Breath of Fire series. It really should have been it's own game. That way I wouldn't have had glorious expectations, only to have them shattered by the huge differences between it and the rest of the series. Again, not saying it's bad, but that I expected more Breath of Fire and less... it.)

Also, there's a big difference between being made for another system and then being ported and being made for mobiles to begin with. Very big difference - especially in quality. ;.;

Breath of Fire has been a dead franchise for over a decade by now. This decision was not motivated by a desire to continue the franchise and do it justice, it was motivated by the desire to make a cheap cash in on an IP that people have been clamoring for for years.
Yeah darken pretty much covered it. I hadn't heard anything about it, but the second I read the topic title I thought: seriously...they are ruining yet another of my favorite series? Damn you game companies. I do understand the prospect of trying new things, and I guess companies consider us who enjoy classic rpgs a dying breed (that and they are cheapskates). I personally don't think so, it's just the fact they stopped making very many enjoyable ones. In terms of mobile games, I personally don't care for them. I tried playing one of these action rpgs on my android before, and I hate the controls.

I'll end this with cheap game ripoffs and overpriced dlc (I'm taking all games into account, not just mobile)...it's no wonder good games are so hard to come by. For the ps2 I had over 30 games I liked...for the ps3 I can't even name one off the top of my head.

Edit: nevermind, forgot about d3/d4. So i guess I can name two off my head..but that's still a huge drop.
Everything about the process behind the decision making has already been said so I'll just quote myself with what Capcom has released for the mobile platforms in both a new game and a port of an existing game:

Don't worry guys. With prior quality mobile releases from Capcom like Megaman Xover and the MMX ios port I'm sure this will be a quality product!

Oh god, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who is pissed about what BoF6 is being released on. >_>;

What the flying fuck? Agh, why can't anyone do DLC right(or better yet just remove it completely unless it's a decent enough expansion or something that's priced well)... But, seriously? Ryu and Nina are DLC? Welp, BoF go join Megaman...and a few others in the graves that Crapcom made for you. >,> (Next thing we'll see come the PS4/XBONE era: Breath of Fire 7; $60 + $10 to play as Ryu + $10 to play as Nina + $10 to see the true ending + $50000 to..fuck it, I'm done. xD)

Damn right, lol..I've been a fan since I was a kid, but what is it with game companies and (kinda)ruining their best series with these mobile games? I mean first was FFATB, then that Megaman bs...ugh... :c

You've missed out on a lot of good RPG experiences(on the ps1/ps2) it seems Kentona-sensei~ :3
On the plus side, Breath of Fire II is slated for re-release on the Wii-U Virtual Console in a few months, so, you know, at least that's something. I wonder if they'll try to touch it up like they did with the (terribly horrible) gameboy version?

One other plus - this time on the side of VI - is the music. If you check out the site (which has a whole lot of nothing on it at the moment) you will hear some top tier tunage, which is something that BoF has always had (imo). So... that's a plus I guess.

Also, this guy makes a case. Dunno that I buy it but it's a case.

Capcom must test the waters: They must gauge the general interest in a new Breath of Fire title before going all out with a next-generation console title. They can’t rely on decade-old data or the sales figures of mobile, Playstation Network, and Virtual Console re-releases.

More like fantasy. Maybe if he said handheld it wouldn't be such a complete joke.
I don't get why devs are insisting on changing genre/styles of existing franchises...you cant say its brand power becuase more often than not its going to piss off the fans, people who dislike the original BOF series aren't going to try the new one and people who never heard of the title will be unaffected...there's no positives here. Let's go through the recent list of changes

- X-Com: SRPG -> Shooter + Outcry = Back to SRPG = Massive sales
- Front Mission: SRPG -> Action Mech shooter similar to armored core -> terrible sales
- Kingdom Hearts: Anything not KH3 except KH3D -> Terrible sales
- Various FF remakes on DS -> New artists make annoying 64-quailty 3D with chibi like art style = Terrible Resale
- Various FF Remakes on PSP -> Ignoring the much lower install base of PSP these versions of FF remakes were mostly cleaned of versions of the games keeping the 8/16-bit style and sold much better

You think companies would have analysts that would be like..uh boss doing stuff that will upset our customers will make us lose money...If I told one of my customers at my ice cream store "Frozen Treats r' Us"...no fuck you I sell hot dogs now go get your ice cream elsewhere...guess what there gonna do exactly that.

Also I hate the BS about "Oh were putting it on Virtual Console to judge sales" no that's useless the majority of people who are looking for a sequel already have the game and we all know your only saying to boost sales of a game you did no work to release.

-- It really should have been! IMO, BOF5 killed the freakin' series with all its "fabulous new changes" and wanting to be more like a "dungeon crawler / strategy game" more than an actual true, blue sequel to the first four games. It definitely was one of the most disappointing games I have ever played in my life...

(BTW, Crapcom may not even release this game over to the west. So they may decide to break our hearts and stomp out our guts even before the game even makes it out on the...shelf?)

(And here I thought that Crapcom was starting to learn from their mistakes...)

Hey, I'll try and stay positive on the subject and take this as a possible sign that more "dead or alive" RPG classics, like "Wild Arms," "Chrono," etc. might come back from the grave.

Only so they can be brought into the same horrible fate of having an incarnation on the mobile library~ :x

Gee, I never seriously put that much thought into that happening.

-- That's probably what's going to be happening!!!

B...But Square-Enix & XSeed aren't REALLY that stupid to do that...

...Would they???
