I'd like to do an experiment with you all, if you please. This isn't a debate topic. It's not about the site's standards. It is, as the title says, a pure and simple informal poll. Through it, I'm hoping to shed some light on the various thoughts and perceptions regarding a topic many people seem to hold very strong opinions for: review scores.

For each person who posts, I'd like you to fill out what each of the following scores means TO YOU. It can be one word. It can be a short paragraph. It can be a long paragraph. However you like, just put something describing what each one means in your opinion.

Also, PLEASE PUT YOUR RESPONSES IN HIDE TAGS. This is to prevent your opinions from possibly influencing others opinions before they post. It is recommended that you POST BEFORE READING THE RESPONSES OF OTHERS.

Although RMN has 11 options for review scores, I'm only asking you rate the following for simplicity's sake.

.5
1
2
3
4
5

Please keep any additional banter to a minimum. Again, THIS IS NOT A DEBATE. This is you posting your opinions on the subject matter, and all responses should be treated as unrelated.

This is the format your posts should follow, though I'm sure this will go horribly wrong somewhere down the line:

.5 - what this means to me
1 - what this means to me
2 - what this means to me
3 - what this means to me
4 - what this means to me
5 - what this means to me

My views are similarly outlined in my own review article, but I won't link it to avoid unintentional bias as the topic's creator.
Not me. I want to be influential and powerful!
This is coming from someone who has never written a review, but this is how I've always viewed the numbers personally.

.5 - Completely Unplayable. Game crashes immediately and often.
1 - Unplayable. It might technically be playable, but the experience is frustrating. No redeeming qualities.
2 - Below Average. Inferior to the norm, but still playable. Nothing particularly interesting and a fair number of negative points.
3 - Average. The same type of game you see everywhere. Nothing remarkable, but also nothing terrible.
4 - Above Average. Better than your average game. Has a number of interesting features, but doesn't quite bring it all together into a complete package.
5 - A Must Play. A game I would recommend to all my friends. Not necessarily perfect, but the highlights greatly outnumber the faults

In some ways, that's even better. I strongly encourage non-reviewers to post here, too. This is all about perspective.
.5 - Utter Sheit
1 - Really friggin bad
2 - Would not play
3 - Average
4 - Good
5 - Fantastic

On RMN: A way to gauge what the community thinks about a game.

.5 - Butthurt
1 - Game didn't gel with the player at all
2 - Completely unmemorable experience
3 - A thing happened. It was alright.
4 - It was p.good.
5 - A fantastic and new experience. Or butthurt. Probably butthurt. Thinking about it I don't remember any of those from RMN. I think I'm getting my Internet community memories mixed up. Here it's more some mediocre at best thing that hit it off with a few people somehow.

I'm essentially copy-pasting here, but my thoughts on what ratings mean to me are summed thusly:

1/5 -> Terrible. Forget about hitting an audience. The game is so bug-ridden, or otherwise unplayable, that what entertainment can be found in the game has a hard time coming to the surface.

2/5 -> Bad but playable. I had a poor experience with the game. When played by a player the game actually caters to, it would serve it's purpose.

3/5 -> Average. A solid experience, but snags somewhere along the line cause it to be held back from being "good".

4/5 -> Good. I enjoyed the experience, and have no qualms supporting it if was considered for a featured game (if it wasn't featured already).

5/5 -> Excellent. Among the paragons of gaming experiences, and instant feature material in my humble opinion (if it wasn't featured already).

Considering the text at 1/5, I'm not sure what how a .5 would even happen. Nor would I want to find out how it would happen!

I'll state that this is my opinion both on and outside of RMN. There's no reason for me to not rate RM games like I'd rate "real" games.

.5 - Probably terrible. I don't really see this rating a lot, and when I do it seems deserving. People around here are nice enough to not bomb a game with a bottom of the barrel score without good reason, so if I see it I believe it.

1/1.5 - It could be bad. But I've seen games which I've liked get really low scores, so I'll still check something out if it has a lower rating like this. Usually it's right on the money though.

2/2.5 - Games rated in this bracket sometimes turn out pretty good. This is where I feel that games which have been unfairly treated usually wind up, as it seems to be the go to "not my cup of tea" rating.

3/3.5 - Obviously these are average scores. They rank just like any other average rating would, they're for games with I consider "eeehhhh..." when I play them. If someone manages to make it to this kind of rating then I think they're doing pretty well, really. This is the bare minimum for where I'd be happy about getting a rating.

4/4.5 - 4 Star games are the "good" games, I suppose. most of the games that I really enjoy go into this bracket, so if I rate something a 4 I feel like I've got my money/time's worth out of it. 4.5 is for the games that are near perfect to me, ones that I'll run through multiple times and such.

5 - 5 is obviously what I'd give perfect games. The only games that I would ever rate this high are Paper Mario and Banjo-Tooie.
.5 - This game is abysmal and not worth your time until it's fixed. Usually the game is broken and glitchy in a bad way.
1 - This game is bad but it usually has some minimally interesting qualities. Should be improved upon, but it's not broken.
2 - Bad game but it has near redeeming qualities, has special meaning to me/good music or an interesting idea that I can see forming. Definitely not broken just lackluster needs improving.
3 - Average. Think full-blown RTP game with a generic story monsters etc. Usually has a left me not feeling I wasted my time.
4 - Great game, an RTP game will RARELY get up to this score but it's possible especially if it's simply in RTP style but the graphics are custom. Great story, interesting ideas and fun mechanics. Story is especially important for this score.
5 - Left me feeling wowed and optimistic about future indie games. Left an impact has special meaning and (usually) amazing aesthetics. This is Where I Want to Die was well-implemented and left me feeling great afterwards. There aren't mechanics to speak of, but the game looked decent at least, pleasurable at best. Story is probably the most important part for this.

.5 - The game is abysmal. No redeeming qualities and causes frustration. Not fun or playable at all. This score is as rare as a 5 because you need to exceed expectations (in a bad way) in order to get this.

1 - The game is terrible. Has multiple flaws in one of the following areas: Gameplay, Graphics, Sound, etc. Not enjoyable as a game.

2 - The game is bad. Has a few redeeming qualities that make it above a 1, but still flawed in one or more of its categories. May have some enjoyable bits overwhelmed by bad bits.

3 - The game is average to mediocre. Not offensive, but at the same time not memorable. Games can definitely be enjoyable through this score, but have a few bad or unpolished moments that can ruin the experience.

4 - A good game. Well polished in most of its categories. Mediocre/bad bits mostly downplayed by many good bits. Genuine fun.

5 - One of the best darn games on the site. Exceeds expectations even from a grade 4 game.
0.5 - A game on this level would just be a particularly bad example of a 1 (see below).

1 - A game with this score would have to be unentertaining in every aspect. The gameplay would have to be either so hard that progress is a matter of luck, or so easy that progress is a matter of hitting random buttons. (This difficulty level would have to be maintained throughout the majority of the game in order to justify this rating). The story would have to be simple, uninspired, nonexistant, or so riddled with errors and inconsistencies that it becomes impossible to enjoy any redeeming qualities of the story.

A 1 could be considered equivalent to the "F" grade in the American school system: A game that completely fails to provide any entertainment.

2 - A game with this score (or lower) is a game that I would likely recommend against playing if asked my opinion about it. Gameplay would be well-balanced but uninspired (think default RPGMaker battle system and database), or innovative but poorly implemented or tested. Story would be likely on a level where the story moves along at times, but not particularly well-written (ie. the Mentor character's betrayal of the party either comes out of nowhere, or is telegraphed with the literary equivalent of flashing neon lights)

A 2 could be considered equivalent to the "D" grade in the American school system. To a certain extent, it entertains the player, but the implementation is flawed such that the player would likely have a better time doing something else.

3 - This level is roughly the level where if somebody were to tell me that they were thinking of playing the game in question, I would tell them "Sure, go ahead". Equivalent to the "C" grade in the American school system, games at this level achieve the purpose of a game (to entertain) without any significant flaws, but also fail to go above and beyond the expected level of entertainment in any meaningful way).

4 - At this level, a game has significantly enhanced the gameplay experience in some way. It might have stunning graphics, beautiful music, a thought-provoking premise, amusing dialogue, a well-written story, or innovative and well-implemented gameplay. (And would likely have several of said improvements). Games on this level are something that I would go out of my way to recommend to somebody.

A rating of 4 could be considered roughly equivalent to a "B+" or "A-" in the American school system.

5 - I've seen some people on sites with ratings claim that the highest rating on a scale should never be given out, because it indicates that said work is absolutely perfect. I disagree, but in order to recieve a 5 from me, I would have to believe that said game is well above average in most categories, or very very much above average in a few categories with a good reason for why it is lacking in the others. Either gameplay or story must be above average.

This is the rough equivalent of an "A+" in the American school system.

.5 barely playable
1 poor
2 mediocre
3 average
4 good
5 excellent
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

.5 - As good as 10% of games on RMN. In practice, more than 10% of games on RMN are horrifyingly bad in almost every aspect, so this is probably gonna be unplayable.
1 - As good as 20% of games on RMN. In practice, this probably means that it has no redeeming qualities, but has a couple parts that are almost passable.
2 - As good as 40% of games on RMN. In practice, this probably means that it had a vision and did a few things right, but couldn't create an entertaining end result.
3 - As good as 60% of games on RMN. In practice, this probably means that it was enjoyable at times, and was possibly briefly great at certain points, but was mediocre overall.
4 - As good as 80% of games on RMN. In practice, this probably means it successfully did almost everything it wanted to do, did a few of those things phenominally well, and the things it wanted to do worked well together to create a fun game.
5 - As good as any game on RMN. In practice, this probably means that the game was completely fantastic on almost every front, could easily be called a masterpiece, was probably as good as any actual Super Nintendo or Playstation 1 game, and rekindled my faith in RPG Maker.
This message features personal opinions and examples:

0.5 - Not worth playing but still has a very limited amount of good ideas or nice-looking art or nice-sounding music, etc. (otherwise score would be zero)

1 - This game probably isn't really worth investing any minute/hour of your life's time but it can still have its moments, if scarce. There is a lot of room for improvement in almost all aspects of the design.
Ex: Coldcrest Archipelago

2 - Should be mildly enjoyable to a good amount of players, more so if this is your genre and not the reviewer's, in which case some players might give it a higher rating. This game probably won't make a strong impression on you and has room for improvement but can still show the developer's potential.
Ex: SkyE

3 - Should be quite enjoyable to a majority of players. The game might not be great enough to motivate you to finish it or still have some flaws, but it has a fair share of redeeming qualities that make the overall gaming experience positive.
Ex: Hero's Realm

4 - This game should be enjoyable to all and shows high quality in several of its aspects (gameplay, story, art, music, etc.). Almost everything in this game is done "right" but it still has little flaws here and there. Some players who particularly enjoy it might understandably give it a perfect rating of 5/5.
Ex: Wine & Roses

5 - Two kinds of games deserve such a score:

A) Some or most of the game's aspects are so impressive and/or well designed, technically and/or creatively, that they outshine any remaining (although unlikely) flaws. Players who enjoy this game will most probably think of it as one of their favorites and surprise themselves thinking about it when they're not playing.
Ex: Taut

B) The game executes its concept or theme so well that this execution cannot be improved further. In this case, a high level of quality in all other game design aspects is unnecessary because the mind-blowing experience is what truly matters.
Ex: Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer

.5: Terrible
1: Bad
2: Below average
3: Above average
4: Very good
5: Excellent
.5 - Oh god, why?
1 - Pretty damn bad.
2 - Not that good, but it could be much worse.
(2.5 - Pretty damn average.)
3 - Better than the norm, even if only by a little.
4 - Pretty damn good.
5 - How can something be this good?
3.5+ : Rotates through the "Highly Rated" roster.
<3.5 : Doesn't.

Pretty sure the cutoff is actually 4, not 3.5.
