HAS ANYONE FIGURED OUT HOW TO DOA TACTICS GAME IN RPG MAKER?
Posts
Just wondering because I love tactics games and goods ones are SO hard to come by. I'm talking about games like Final Fantasy Tactics with multiple classes both generic and "Hero" character, lots of unique items with fun flavour text, freely switch between jobs (with certian pre-reqs)
I was just wondering if anyones managed to do this...like make a script or w/e (sorry I'm new to the creation side of RPGM) because I was hoping to make a short game for my friends to mess with and maybe I'd post it here if they deemed it to be fun.

I haven't played those tactics or Final Fantasy games ever, but from what you described, I believe there are scripts made for them. Of course, it all depends on how well you can use them and manage switches and variables. :)
If it was still available, I would point out Synthetic Oddessey, and the review I did for it. Alas...
I don't know about RPGMaker but classes/switching jobs would be easy in RPGToolkit(with a little bit of programming)
Tactical battle system would be hard but not impossible, somebodys doing a TBS at the moment with the toolkit
http://rpgtoolkit.net/devlog/project/jades-1/feed/
Im sure the same can be done in RPGmakerVX ACE I hear ruby is pretty good

Has anyone tried these:
Seems to me to get what I need I'll probably need to track down several different scripts
1. A Tactics Battle System,
2. A way to change classes...preferably some sort of tiered system with special requirements like X level knight + X level priest to become a paladin
3. A custom map script that allows movement from important location to important location instead of open movement (I actually prefer open movement in RPGs but if I could find this..it would "feel" right for a tactics game..although towns I'll likely have players be able to walk around like normal)
4. A custom equipment system (this ones optional)
5. A crafting system would be nice :D but this is also optional
6. The ability to have more than 4 party members and to swap out which characters you currently have in your party.
7. A way to allow players to add custom "Generic" characters to the party to mix and match with pre-made "Heros" (customization would be simple..choose a sprite/face and starting class...maybe some stat choices..I dunno)
Oh I wish I knew how to code.
Anyways in case people don't know what I mean when I say "Tactics" game I'll try to explain
Combat is turn based, done on a grid-based battlefield...think chess but usually with a much bigger board and varying terrain heights and types. It also very similar to DnD or Warhammer combat in that respect.
The main attraction of this is ALOT of customization everyones "Army" should look different even if they have the exact same class line-up, its also great for Cameos (if I decide this game is worth it I might make a few requests for my fav RMN games) and weird classes (ie. The Calculator :D)
IMO FFT on PSX/PSP is the #1 Tactics game out there..I mean Fire emblem, Advance Wars and FFT Sequels are nice but FFT was just the perfect blend of everything (I like the mix of generic and heroics in stead of JUST generics or JUST hero characters)
vvv Skip to about 9m.20s for a good combat gameplay showcase vvv
Note: I DO NOT expect to match the graphical capabilities of the PSX :P Especially since there's no way I could makes sprites that good.
vvv Good Menu/Systems Showcase vvv
Note: I don't expect to be able to emulate all of these

Oh and just to clarify I'm not being demanding or anything I just want to see if this is possible, if its not I'll start with a smaller project and try to code something myself. (Try being the key word :P)
Apart from the fact that PS1 FF Tactics is a 3D area and so rotatable everything is possible in RPGToolkit, I would be very surprised if VXAce couldn't achieve this as well. But I am unfamiliar with how VXAce works so I can't say for sure
I will definitely look into RPGToolkit when I get a sec but I'm hoping to get it to work in RPG Maker as I actually have a general knowledge of how that line of game creators work whereas I'd be starting from complete scratch with RPGToolkit.
I was thinking more something like this graphics wise
Mind you if this project (or something similar) is actually finished it would be really cool
GTBS+Layy Meta Engine working together
Hmmmm...seems Yanfly (is that a person or a group? He/She/They seem to be very popular amongst this community) has made some sort of custom character creator I wonder if I could utilize that for my to allow the player to create "Generics"

Also Yanfly is one person and a he. He never made that last script public.

well I know i've been plugging the rpgtoolkit a lot this topic but thats only cause Its what I know. anyways the rpgtoolkit can also do isometric tiles

author=MarrendMe, and BurningTyger were interested in getting back on that..though the other members of our group haven't really been around too much sadly, so.. :c

While not in RPG Maker, there was this, although the funding for it didn't go over well at all.
Oh, and Moghunter's apparently working on a tactical system as well:

Oh cool is that his homepage or just a news site cause I've been trying to find the most up to date version to test with (this one is the most recent thanks)
Real bummer Yanfly hasn't made that script public the class selection is VERY similar to FFT class select, oh well I don't blame him for keeping some of his tricks for himself :P
Are you sure you didnt make RPG Toolkit Gandalf :P No worries I'll check it out when I get home (at my buddies right now) any helpful tutorials you suggest?
Oooo Moghunters thing looks cool any chance I can get a link to his site?
As for Tethical seems really cool too bad the KS failed
This seems to cover my class change system quite well (I'll probably remove the sub-class option)

I am glad that there's some activity on the Tactical gamefront. I got hooked to it from playing the Shining Force and many of the games made by Spiderweb Software games, which have some RPG elements to them. It is a highly overlooked genre. The most representative game hosted by RMN is Aurora Wing, so yeah, it is quite possible. Good luck getting resources for your project, failedlegend!

Thanks for the link maybe DFalcon could help me out if I PM him and thank you for the good wishes.
Oh and to everyone I forgot to mention If I can pull this off I'm going to be giving this to my friends as an X-Mas gift (which X-Mas is the question :P) and each will have themselves (or an avatar of some sort that represents them) as the moan character but If they do like it when I post it on here their names will be changed for their privacy and the main character will be changed for a wider audience (and will have key scenes changed to make sense and develop his character)

Wish Granted - http://yanflychannel.wordpress.com/rmvxa/core-scripts/class-system/class-unlock-level/
I'm gonna have to send Yanfly an E-mail to be sure he's cool with me using his scripts and to thank him

You're welcome. The other developer that I consider has tactical battle covered is Deltree. Probably not quite the way you envision it, but I'm sure he'd willing to help you with your X-mas wish. BTW, not to scare you, fl, but you've got just over 11 weeks to get it done.

Anyone know a good place to ger faceset, chipsets, etc. I'm ok at sprites but everything else is beyond my capabilities

Oh, OK so you have plenty of time then! So they actually sell blank Hockey Jerseys? Personally I would like to be able make my own Soccer Jersey.
Here's the link to Mog's site. He hasn't really posted any other info about the system he's working on other than that one screenie though. :)
