Why the hell does cruddy FF4 get all these remakes and ports, but FF5 and FF6, the more superior games, get horrible ports to the GBA and mobile phones?

WHY SQUARE WHY.

They seriously need to gtfo out of the mobile game market.

Hay I like FFIV, its a good game. That doesn't mean your wrong abort everything else though. (Well maybe not about the GBA remakes)

Not that I really care about the remake. I'm the only person in the world apparently who doesn't like 6.

I'm certainly not going to buy another ATB graphic bandwagon game, that's for certain. I'm going to wait for a TRUE remake.

*cries*

I'm not going to bother with this at all. Since you can get the *cough* ROM *cough* and play the original via *cough* emulator *cough* I don't think they'll be able to monetize on my nostalgia. Plus, I'm poor!

I have Windows phone...

You probably have the least options for gams of the three most popular smarphone platforms since development efforts have been concentrated on the two other ones.

Perhaps the Firefox OS phones (yes, there are such things!) will provide another alternative, with apps based on HTML5. That's were I think app development, include mobile gams will be heading, so that they will become platform agnostic.

FF6 is grindy if you try to do shit like learn all the magic, especially shit with the awful x1 learn rate. I won't miss that stuff being turned up and the encounter frequency down (thank god for smoke bombs!). For actually needing levels and power to beat the game it isn't FF5 abusable but still pretty easy. The only significant hurdle I remember is the floating continent.

I saw some screenshots of FF5 for mobile devices, and is kind of grating to see Leena's appearance change so drastically from her portrait to her sprite. They have no excuse to do that now that they have to re-draw everything in Hi-res. xP

Lenna and half of the crew. Galuf ages 20 years in his portrait and Bartz is basically a different dude.

time for a third go-around with ff5a...
If it looks anything like the mobile version of FF5, I'm going to be very, very sad.

God, the mobile version of FF5 looks like a bad RMXP game. How the hell can you screw up that hard?

FFVI...grindy? Man, VI is probably, like, the least grindy FF there is.

@All the naysayers: Um, just stick to the original version? You can still play it on your smartphone. I have it on mine! What's the big deal?
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

They specifically said they were going to improve its graphics the way they did with the mobile version of FF5, so, be sad.

Most of the graphics aren't super bad like the meteor though, they're just higher res versions of the original graphics:

The most grindy part of FF6 is when you get to the final dungeon and suddenly you have to use twelve characters and a bunch of them are level 30 and the only magic they know is Mute and Slow. But, I mean, you're not actually supposed to grind. You're supposed to use crappy characters you're not used to using and have a hard time. But people do grind there.

Dude, I don't care about myself, I care about the game. That is why I am an amateur game designer! Because I care about games! Unless you're arguing that I can somehow keep everyone else from playing this version.

What I'd actually like to do is, uh, get hired by Square Enix and fix it? Because shit:
- Make dead and absent characters gain XP to satisfy the bigwigs who want to make the game more accessible and less grindy
- Change the way stat gains from magicite works to be more FF9y: once you master a magicite you can "equip" its stat gains whether you actually have that magicite equipped or not
- Make one or two minor game-wide nerfs to the player to make up for this, like maybe limiting the number of people in the back row to two, because seriously the only character in this game who anyone would ever put in the front row is Gau unless they don't know how the game works
- Fix the actual bugs like magic evade, blind, etc.
- Keep the bosses and loot from the GBA version's optional dungeon but create a new area for them because Dragon's Den looks like it was created as someone's first RPG Maker 2003 project; my personal pick would be to have the Lete River sunken into an underground river, and the now-flooded Returners' Hideout at the end of it
Man, what is with the new optional endgame content they are adding to classic SNES rpgs anyway? Chrono Trigger DS's endgame bonus series was like "My First RPG Maker CT Fangame lololol" quality. It was horrid.

Man, have you seen the new dungeons in Chrono Trigger DS? I've seen first RM projects look better than that shit, never mind how horribly fetch questy it is with a bunch of mandatory encounters.

(I actually haven't seen Dragon's Den at all so I don't know how it compares. I should grab a FF6A rom, patch it up to get the GBA-ness out of it, and give FF6 another spin. I haven't played it for fucking forever now)

FF6A would be ran "glitchless". Abusing shit like Joker-Doom and shit like that isn't that fun for me.

e2: Oh yeah, Dimensions and FF5ios also have good looking monster sprites too. The character graphics are across the board look like amorphous piles of shit though. Especially Dimensions and its whole two body types, one for each gender, with a different head slapped on top.

Yeah. The new dungeon on the moon of FF4 and the optional dungeons in the crystal rooms in FF1 are even worse; they're just totally ass-random maps connected in completely bizarre ways and 90% of the monsters are level 5. You'll be in a generic cave, and go down some stairs and be in a library with a bad puzzle, and go down some stairs and be in a forest, and go down some stairs and be in a town, and go down some stairs and be on an overland, and go in a cave entrance on the overland and be in a temple.

The new trials in Mysidia in FF4 and the optional postgame dungeon in FF5 are... better by comparison, but still far from being selling points. They're not embarassingly bad, at least.

All of these ports with the shitty new optional dungeons were actually made by the same company, which isn't Square Enix. They were outsourced.

The postgame content in FF2, in the FF: Dawn of Souls remake for the GBA, is actually pretty amazing. It's probably the best part of the game. Which was weird.
Man that's depressing but not really surprising. The Ancient Temple in FF5A or whatever it was called didn't look that bad. Randomly connected sure but at least the individual maps looked good and not a clusterfuck like the CTDS ones. Maybe I should make a game theory thread about post-game content with a bunch of shit examples and try to start some discussion of how to make it fun or if post-game content should be shifted to the main game or something. I'd have to think about how to approach that thread.

I did start the FF2 PSP post-game but only for about twenty minutes. Part of it was I was really ready to be done with that game when it ended and I heard it was a grindy slog and hoping the RNG gave you the worthwhile spells (toad/exit/etc.) .

The problem with the post-game to FF2 is that you have to beat FF2! That game is like trying to cut down a tree with a butter knife. It's possible, but way more effort than it's worth.

I agree that most of the extra content feels tacked on, but it is optional and are harmless most of the time. I do remember one area in the extra moon dungeon in the GBA remake of 4. It's a special area for Kain where you find yourself wondering around Barron as Kain solving a murder mystery. It goes into Kain's psyche and how he's always betraying people, and has to confront his inner daemons. It's actually quite awesome. And about the only memorable thing about an otherwise dull-ass dungeon.

And just to keep on topic, that screenshot from FF5 IOS... F*@&ing horrible! It looks like a fan mgame made in XP. A bad fan game...

ASDGKASDKASG AAAAAAH FFVI REMAKE!?!?! AHASDASDHAAH OMG OMG FANGASM

Wait? Same style as FFV? What? I... hate... you SE.

I was going to pirate this anyway.
Haven't played through the ios version of FFV (because I don't have an ios/android), but honestly it's not all that bad. Character sprites are, I'll admit, but the job menu and enemy sprites are pretty impressive:

So, will FFVI ios be downright terrible? No, as long as they don't screw it up like that meteor..and the sprites we'll just have to get used to, I guess. Although, full 3D remakes of both of these would've been so much better.. :p
I was really kind of hoping they would remake it for the 3DS .the thing android I own is a tablet, and that crashes every five minutes (I wish that was an exaggeration)

I feel like SE has actually been using a modified RPG Maker engine for the 2D remakes of I-V. Everything from the font to the positioning of stats screams "slightly scripted default RM menu" to me. Just look at the health in one of the screenshots.
It says "7910/_______7910". Did somebody mess up the x-axis value? Max HP is 9999, so it's not like they're holding space for future stat growth.
