THE 2013 "OFFICIAL" MISAO PREDICTIONS AND DISCUSSION THREAD

Best Sound & Music - Blood Shard.

Jurassic_Mark composed an entire soundtrack for his game and he crafts the mood meticulously with sound. Bonus points to Enelysion though.

Just so you know, I didn't do the *entire* soundtrack for Blood Shard - there're maybe two/three songs in there that're not mine. But for the most part yeah, the soundtrack's mine. Thanks too~
Hm... kinda cool to see Divinity Fatum on the list. Altrough not popular, nice to see it somehow appreciated.
I'd say Divinity Fatum's strength is its atmosphere. It's also a fair contender for Most Promising Demo, since so many games have been made to completion this year.

Moved Homework Salesman to Completed Games since it is now complete.

Then I guess you need to edit your entry of "Most Promising Demo" since Homework Salesman is now a Completed Game.

You can replace it with mine. :D
Welp, guess I should feel a bit chuffed that Enelysion got an honourary mention for Best Sound and Music. XD That Audio folder makes up 80% of the game's size, after all.
Hm, sorry for bump but is it normal for these threads to be so abandoned? Or is it just that Misaos ain't that anticipated?

No, we're probably just too busy/lazy to deal with ... and the Misao is a great deal! It's one of those things people think about more than talk about. They'll be more talk, I think, the closer we get to nomination and voting time.

Well, technically, nominations occur throughout the year. The voting part just so happen to be around this time of year. So there's a bigger push to get Misao bait games nominations in before the voting proper starts.
I edited my list on page 1 after playing VorLorn. Such an atmospheric and polished game. I wasn't expecting such a polished product and subtle command of tension from an RPG Maker game, especially with minimal dialogue.

If you guys want to see this thread active, I'd like to see what games you think deserve Misaos. Or perhaps games that you have recently played and think deserve the spotlight.
I just played Happy Birthday, and nominated it for Game of the Year.

I was playing Halloween Bash. The system layout is very beautiful, and it's very interesting conceptually. But it's too battle-centered, and I just didn't love the battles much. Too DBSish.
I think Happy Birthday was an excellent game with a unique mystery-solving game mechanic and captivating story, but it ultimately became frustrating to me because of the fact that you almost have to show every single character every single item by trial and error in order to get the right combination. For someone like me who is a skim reader, I found myself missing on information and thinking "what do I do?". Calunio of all people know that I'm quite eager to skip into the action, but even then I still believe someone can enjoy the gameplay of a game without having to read every single line of the story in order to unlock it.

That aside, I'd give Happy Birthday 2nd best story of the year behind Suzy and freedom.
Oh, I've also played Happy Birthday and I felt it suffers from the same thing - sometimes you had to just blindly show every item you had to every character to try and progress in the game. Altrough that's how usual mystery solving games work, it is still frustrating, as it kills feeling of being a detective. Plus for me is that game was loosely inspired by visual novel "When the Seaguls Cry" (or at least I get such feeling). I haven't really played any other games, but still I wouldn't really say that Happy Birthday had that great of story. Everything was pretty much obvious before even going on the first floor.

If anything, I'd say that Misadventures of Detective Butler ( http://rpgmaker.net/games/5470/ ) tells far more interesting story, altrough it is more of a visual novel, than actual game.
Calunio, it seems you may be interested in games of mystery genre. I'd suggest you to try out Misadventures of Detective Butler. As it is not so interactive as Happy Birthday, story told in this game is far more interesting imo.

That's also why I nominated this game for Best Storytelling and Direction. Not only it has pretty interesting plot, likeable characters and nice atmosphere suitable for detective story, but it also presents us - players - with neat locked room mystery, which I personaly enjoy.
Here are two games I have'nt seen praised here yet :
Touhou - Wandering Souls and
Logomancer.

First Touhou - Wandering Souls :
Best Non-RPG Touhou - Wandering Souls
Game of the Year Touhou - Wandering Souls
Most Technical Prowess Touhou - Wandering Souls
Best Level/Dungeon/Puzzle Design Touhou - Wandering Souls
Best Gameplay Mechanics Touhou - Wandering Souls

What an incredible non-rpg game! In my mind, anyone completing a game here deserves praise. Doing so in a uncommon genre, having such fast solid rich gameplay, having all the extra content at the end ... and offering all in two languages ; I'm speechless!

The Logomancer

Best Storytelling and Direction The Logomancer
Best Characters The Logomancer
Best Setting The Logomancer

I like how the characters, the tone, the world and the gameplay blend so well.
I feel the level of language and style of humor deserve their time in the spotlight too.

Is there any chance of having a category someday for games that offer multiple langages (like touhou)?

To be honest, I wouldn't give so many awards to just 2 games! It's that I feel they offer a great contribution to all these categories. I've been playing rpgmaker games since the days of A Blurred Line.
Thanks Karkwa! Those games definitely went under the radar. Added them to the list. I will probably need to at least play Touhou - Wandering Souls as well. It piques my interest that a platformer like that could be made in VX.

Edit: Anyone able to recommend some good demos? There are only 4 on the list. It's probably because a lot of the most anticipated demos got completed this year.
Welp, I can't exactly suggest my own games, now can I? ^^
Since we're on the subject of selfish inquiries, I have a question: is there a grace period for games that are released late in the year? In other words, would a game released in December be eligible for the Misaos in, like, 2014? You know, like a game that didn't attract much attention, but then slowly built a fan base over the course of a year...hopefully...

I would recommend Sorceress Quest, Sorceress Quest, and, um, Sorceress Quest. It's a adventure game with a point-and-click interface built in 2K3. I wouldn't recommend using the mouse to move the player character (the pathfinding is a bit icky), and the English translation is a bit off in places (the game is dual language - German and English), but otherwise, it's pretty damn solid!
