FINDING GAMES

I dont see a place where you can type in a game ...other than the google place....and find it. There used to be a place I think. There is a place to view all games but it isnt alphabetized and youd have to go through the whole list and hope the game youre looking for isnt the very last one listed.

Thanks
You mean this? <clicky
Press Games on the upper left of the site. :o
I believe he means that you can't search for a specific game by name.
I would also like something like that to be implented. There's the google custom search, sure, but it's not specifically for getting to a games page.
Thanks Archeia....but Snow was more to the point than myself. yes finding a specific game seems to be unavailable. There used to be such a thing but even then if you werent exactly spelling the game correctly, it wouldnt be able to find the game. Thank you both for responding.

The Google search would be the place to find the game directly if you knew it's name completely or partially (hopefully, in this latter case you don't get your feared scenario of it being listed last). Unfortunately, the search doesn't allow you to alphabetize the results. Perhaps you can suggest that an improvement idea for RMN version 4.5+ here.

Edit: Nessy's suggestion is useful when you want to find a game with some specific characteristics other than game title. The toughie is Tags since it depends on how well the developers of each game actually tagged their game.

I don't understand what the issue is.

http://rpgmaker.net/search/?q=Elves

The first 3 results link directly to game pages where "Elves" is mentioned. It even picked up on a few that have "Elf" in them!

http://rpgmaker.net/search/?q=Generica

The first result is the game page for Generica.
That search is horrible. It links to blogs, images, forum topics and a lot of things that has nothing to do with finding a specific game.

I'm not sure what you are seeing, but again, in the search for Generica, the VERY FIRST RESULT is the game page for Generica! You can't really get more specific than that. And now blogs and images have nothing to do with finding games?
Yeah, quit bitching people and use the new search bar. It doesn't work like the old one but it searches everything now. If he brought back the old one people would go back to complaining that you can't search the forums with it. I wasn't a fan of the new one at first, but my brain isn't made of stone and I was able to adapt.
Aw shit sorry buddy, I wasn't aware that suggesting stuff was not allowed. What a blunder! I will adapt post-haste and never question anything ever again!
it's not that suggesting stuff isn't allowed it's more that you claimed the search was horrible, and that it is horrible because the search is comprehensive...?

I think I might understand Roy's issue ... he's probably asking about the possibility of doing a further search within results, I'm guessing.
Snowowl, I think you just don't like the Google search function. I myself don't like it at first either, but after exploring it further, it's actually pretty handy, albeit not fancy...

In any case, if you don't like it, at least make sense in your explanation.
Sure, I guess. The problem as I see it is that the forums and the game pages pretty much has nothing to do with each other 99% of the time (specific games aren't discussed there, since there's a game page for that). Including forum stuff therefore just brings useless stuff into the search.
I would prefer if there was 2 separate search thingies for the forums and games.

The problem with bringing blog posts, images etc into the search is also that it adds difficulty into finding a specific game. Let's say I only remember half the game name, for example something generic like Dragon Fantasy. I will have to slog through all the stuff I'm not interested in, such as images where someone mentions those 2 words, to find my desired game.

The search is fine if you know the exact name of the game you're searching for, and it's not the most important problem in the world, but since it was being discussed anyway...

Actually, I do see your point SnowOwl. My feeling is the so called "Custom Search" is a bit too all encompassing "Web" (everything RMN except screenies covered by "Images"). It doesn't provide as many options as some of us would like. You can only sort by "Relevance" or "Date" and that's it. You can't, for instance, do a search for a particular Forum Area or Topic Group, just Game Profiles, Articles, etc. in addition to what has been pointed out so far ...

Thus, I do understand why people are mentioning the shortcomings in the current search implemented in RMN. Hopefully, this healthy discussion will eventually lead to further improvements in the search capabilities sometime in the future. In any event, it definitely is an improvement over the older search, but I have a feeling we shouldn't settle just because it has become the new status quo.
I do like that it encompasses all areas, since I've used it to look for specific topics in which I remember only a few words, or looking for a game which I only remember because of a certain screenshot, but I do feel it would be enhanced by allowing an Advanced search feature to narrow down specific results for when you have a better idea of what, exactly, you're looking for.

I don't know how hard that would be to code, though. There are a lot of things that I'm sure Anky and Kentona would like to add and improve on the site. It's just a matter of time and ability and some things need looking into before others, or some things just aren't possible with certain codes (I imagine. I've no coding knowledge so I'd have no idea about what can and can't be done with the site code.)

Still, I'm sure if enough people ask for it, it'll be taken into consideration.

I'm with SnowOwl and Roy on this one. Finding a specific game page can be downright painful sometimes. The google one may bring in a wider variety of results, but being able to browse just for game pages proved very useful to me in the past. The game page search section doesn't include a field for game title, so finding something specific with that is always a shot in the dark.
So how many pages of search results do you have to go through now? How inconvenient.

Here's a tip: When you want do a search for game pages only, add "games"(put the quotation marks) to the end of your search query. You'll find that it shows 90% game pages only. It locks onto the /games/ in the url.
If nothing was ever changed because of inconvience 99% of todays inventions would not exist.
If searching for stuff was implemented to make stuff convenient, why not make it as convenient as possible? If it's not too inconvenient for you, that is.

I tried to find the joke game Chrono Trigger the other day.

I gave up.

EDIT: Tried again, and it was first on the list. To be fair, though, I have a natural distrust of search engines and I mistakenly thought it was pulling results from outside of RMN.
