FINDING GAMES

If nothing was ever changed because of inconvience 99% of todays inventions would not exist.
If searching for stuff was implemented to make stuff convenient, why not make it as convenient as possible? If it's not too inconvenient for you, that is.
Search engines have a built in feature - the more words you include, the more accurate the search. All you have to do is add 1 defining word like Games or Forum depending on which section of the site you want to look in. That should be common knowledge by now in all internet searches.
At some point this crosses over into laziness. There's a simple viable solution, but you don't wanna do it. Why put time into fixing something that isn't broken to make your occasional searches slightly less labor intensive?
How many sites use 2 different search boxes? That doesn't sound like a good idea. If the google search can be altered by adding new sorting criteria and it's an easy fix, I wouldn't be against it. Sounds handy. Otherwise, keeping it all in 1 search box that can used for all users and scenarios is a logical better choice over your own personal convenience.
The convenience of the many outweighs the convenience of the few.
from Link_2112Did you think that sentence through? Convenience is convenience no matter who you are.

Just because you can add words from RMN's URLs to your search doesn't mean you'll think to (I certainly don't). The issue here is a matter of intuitiveness. When people are searching the site for something, yeah, they'll use the search bar. But when people go to use
from Archeia_Nessiahthis, they're not trying to search the whole site. They're looking specifically for games. Adding 'game' to the search criteria may seem like common sense, but it's not obvious to everyone (hence, this thread). Adding a field to the game search function for name is more intuitive than expecting everyone to have web savvy, even if it is so simple.

Totally. I never did the original search code (nor maintained it - Ankylo masterfully managed that!) but I will see if I can dig it up and see if I can't take that functionality and add it to the Filter Options on the game list page.
If the old search was brought back, for example, it would be more convenient for those searching for a game but completely useless for those wanting to search the forums. The current search is convenient for a larger number of people. It's only slightly less convenient for those searching for a game.
It's not like searching for a game is impossible right now, it just takes a few extra clicks and seconds of skimming.
So then, if the problem is that most people don't know to add the word Games to the search bar, the answer is education on that. Rather than reprogramming the site to accommodate inadequate search engine knowledge and maintaining ignorance on that helpful detail. Searching for stuff in a database will only become more important as time goes on, so people should think about smarter searching in general.

I suppose a compromise would be to add the old search box within that Games section, of the linked image. Maybe just above "Filter Options" or "Welp!".

Step 6: Refine Your Google Search
Google doesn’t know exactly what you want, when you enter a search, so the results you get are its best guess. There are ways you can help it make better guesses. For one, Google provides a variety of ways to refine your searches, to narrow them down.

author=Link_2112Yeah, I will be trying to a variation on this. (remember, the old search also searched users, articles, and tutorials iirc, and I *believe* it also searched a game's description or short description. I would restrict it to only search games and only their titles.)
