NEW POLICIES FOR 2014: A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Posts
I'd rather make games than attempt to coddle your ego, Legion. I am sorry it was bruised over your earned ban (via your vitriolic meltdown). But please stop making false assertions that the ban was unwarranted or "bullshit". Your infantile attempts to undermine my authority are not welcome.
Sorry Max but we are not under any obligation to let you use this website as a sounding board for your toxic vitriol. Go take it somewhere else. We're not interested.

Policing "degrading" language referring to women and policing "degrading" language referring to men: Gay and Retarded.
dude you're going for the high score here aren't you
EDIT: Okay, in all seriousness - it's entirely possible to have all of these conversations and opinions and criticisms and express your thoughts in a way that isn't randomly insulting for, let's be honest, either no reason or just shock value.
I know, can't this website just be about, you know... MAKIN GAMS? Talkin about how slow chrono trigger's battles are? Why Your picks for which is the best final fantasy is obviously terrible and wrong?

But I wouldn't be worth spit as a person if I cared more about the opportunity to try to get internet famous for making RPG Maker games than I did about what I actually believe to be right and wrong in the real world.
I think you should stick to the former.

as a homo special ed worker i have to say that calling a random gam mak website "gay and retarded" (because you have a personal opinion on something not related to amateur gam mak) makes me really wish i could take back all the times over the past few years i tried to defend you to my friends and stuff because you used to be a cool guy
but i literally don't care anymore legion. smash your grungy soap box and mak some gams, or just get the fuck out. i have opinions people disagree with, that doesn't mean i spew them out on a random forum
i'm pretty ashamed that i used to consider you a friend i guess, and it has nothing to do with zoe quinn or idiotic #gamergate stuff. sry not sry

Of all the petty shit to make a post about. Max, you are essentially crying over a single rule that any person who isn't a hateful man-baby bigot can follow.
Like, seriously, why did you even bother?
Like, seriously, why did you even bother?
it is absolutely clear that you do not give a shit about Freedom of Speech
Reading our Code of Conduct I see that 6 out of 8 of our rules are infringing on Freedom of Speech (1-4, 6 and 7). So yes. RMN is not the place to "say anything" and never have been.
"Don't be an asshole" is even a very specific anti-Freedom of Speech rule that many establishments have, but one that many also agree is generally better for everyone and makes a place a lot more pleasant. There are plenty of places without a "being an asshole" rule. If one would like to be one that, I guess, is where one would go.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Can the wording of the rule just be changed to "towards a specific gender"? I mean.
The wording was necessary and targeted to combat a specific problem. At the time, we were getting a lot of Let's Plays/media submissions that casually used really degrading terms to refer to any women they came across in the games they played. This bothered a lot of people (both women and men) so we instituted a new policy to make sure people knew that it was inappropriate. It was and still is important for users to know that RMN is committed to providing a safe environment for women and LGBTQ developers to feel welcome to make and play games. This includes not having to tolerate harassment or the kind of hateful, venomous rhetoric Max has been spewing lately.
I agree that it seems stupid and redundant for us to need such a rule, and we should expect such behavior to go without saying, but here we are.

In theory, I totally agree with LockeZ - we shouldn't be okay with gender-centric harassment in any case - but in practice, it's pretty heavily one-sided. That said, a rule against all gender-centric harassment (or harassment in general, or being an asshole) doesn't seem harmful. I imagine that the enforcement of those rules is going to speak much louder than the rule itself.
I had no idea about the Let's Plays though, I thought this was a result of the Gamergate topics we had around the time.

I understand why it was added, but it's still obviously bad wording which is causing a problem now, and it could very easily be solved by changing it to banning all sexist language instead of only sexist language against a single specific sex. I mean, really.
I know Max is frothing and the bandwagon here might be fun to jump on, but it's also true that this wording is something that could be improved, and I see no downside.

Because you can't pick a white mage if you're a boy and the only class suited for girls is "whore", apparently.
Game site or not, sexistm and being a stupid ass affects everyone.
(kinda late lol)

Is there any particular reason why the rules don't protect against degrading words targeted at people of nonbinary genders?
because we hope that protection would be afforded by members to all members by using common sense and empathy, and that specific legalese terminology would be unnecessary in light of that.
but I guess if things aren't explicitly spelled out, then any branded demographic that is missed is totally fair game. /sarcasm

Okay, just so everyone's on the same page here:
from the Terms of Service:
"You are specifically forbidden from harassing other users"
from the Code of Conduct:
"If you disagree with users, aim your rebuttals and comments at their ideas and points, and not the people themselves. In other words, don't be a dick. Name-calling, slander/libel, and other forms of personal attacks are off limits in our community. Retaliating in kind should be kept to personal forms of communication, if done at all."
Both of these are wide-open and not at all specific to a particular gender. They say, in layman's terms, "don't be an asshole, and don't harass or attack others". I am confident that these are meant to include everyone - men, women, and nonbinary genders. In the end, it all comes down to how well these rules are enforced, because the wording is vague enough to be a catch-all.
This topic in particular seems to pretty clearly be addressing a specific surge of shittiness directed at women that rose up last winter, and I really, really doubt that anyone here is implying that they're suddenly okay with harassing or being an asshole to men. If there are specific instances of that happening that the mods didn't catch, I think it's more than safe to say you can tell them about it.
Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong here.

My point is that when the rules are specifically written in an exclusionary way, it implies that protection is only afforded to specifically enumerated groups and that anyone not mentioned isn't deemed worthy of protection. Why not instead say that degrading gendered language isn't acceptable?
