I saw this before you edited out, thatbennyguy. It was a comprehensive analyzation of Craze's mapping style and how to emulate it, and it was very well written. I didn't answer to it at the time because I wasn't sure how strictly I wanted to follow it (for example, I personally would rather not have every map just be a single screen) but for the most part, I could see it really working for this project, at least from a visual style to adhere to. Why did you take it down?


Upon reading a few other comments, I realized I should let you develop the project the way you wish to make it. Perhaps I'll save a more decent dissection of a Crazegame for a later article ;)



Working on Monster City. There's a reason why I don't like the VX Ace RTP. It's too square :/
Looks a little too spacious. There should be more trees, more random patterns of grass, and less... well, open space. Try placing several levels of cliffs around the map (since there are supposed to be within a mountain range full of caves, which are usually signified by holes in the cliff face). Also remember there's a central hub area where the activity resides, and a path to the Slime King to the north? The grassy stairs don't make sense elevation-wise either (that would make the river a cliff, which it is not).

Otherwise, looks specially quaint. Keep working on it and I bet it could work out nicely.

I'll probably steal someone's location idea to try and help establish the style we're going to ultimately all be shooting for. I'll change mine accordingly to whatever style we choose, of course.

Yeah, I don't think we have to go completely copying a Craze game, but one that feels like one but doesn't place unreasonable limits on the map-makers.

I'll tell you what. If you'll PM me the guidelines you made in that one post, I'll use them to put together a list of what we should aim for. My little map doesn't really lay out any tips or guidelines, and it'd be nice to have something in writing to use as a reference.

If you mean an event, that'd be really cool. If you mean a gamepage, I intend to put one up as soon as I get enough screenshots to justify it.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Not a fan of the way you're doing the cliffs. I get what you're going for, but it doesn't look quite right.

I feel like the height of the trees should be at least two tiles. Also I feel like you could probably condense this map by like 80% unless there's going to be several large-scale cut scenes in it involving armies or parades or something?

"How big should buildings be?" is definitely a thing we should decide before we get too far. First decide how big they should be on the inside, and then decide if we want the outsides to match or not.
I'd make the map a little smaller in general, ARG. It looks okay, but a lot of it is filler that really doesn't need to be there.

@LockeZ I'd probably go for smaller buildings with larger insides just because it'd be easier for everyone to do it.

My next order of business is to map one of Cherusta's districts just as an example. I'll post a picture as soon as I get that done.

I agree, but let's make sure that the shape and relative size still somewhat match from inside to out. We can have smaller houses, but I want it clear when you enter the house that this is the same structure you entered. So the inside of ARG's houses would also need to be square in shape and shouldn't be excessively huge.

VOLUNTEER CHARACTERS NEEDED! Three for the initial party and three to be scattered around the first area of the game!

To go into more details, I'm working on the game's opening scenes and the initial areas. I need three characters to start the game as the initial party, who will be tasked by King Aremen to find the other 30 warriors along with the five diamonds and defeat the Wyrm Wizard.

Even though this won't be a dialog-heavy game, I'd like to work with the three volunteers to get a few lines of dialog that establishes their characters in the opening scene. A warrior type character, a magic type character, and a rogue type character would be ideal for the starting three, so if you have a character that fits and want to have them there at the very start, please let me know! :D

The next three that you can find in the area can be a little more diverse, but as you'll be limited to these characters for the first dungeon, I'm trying to make it a well-rounded party.

Please volunteer your characters if this sounds like fun! If I don't get enough volunteers, I'll decide the missing positions in the lineup by myself. Thanks everyone! ^_^
How about my character, Anna? She's a blue mage type character so I think it's best to introduce her fairily early. Maybe in the first dungeon I guess?

The way I imagine Roise, she's so overconfident of her abilities, that she'd go after the Wyrm Wizard as soon as inhumanly possible. Which might make her an interesting starting character when she founds out that his lair is LOCKED BY MAGIC and finds out that there's these other people she needs to find in order to break the spell.

I dunno. Maybe there's a better choice for the "starting fighter" slot.
I tried a map. I'm not sure if it matches with ARG's though.
