Everyone that has offered constructive input and criticism: Thanks! Seriously. You've taken me in the right direction and I appreciate it. Additional direction and constructive input is welcome.
The truth is I don't see this game getting finished(finishing any game is tough, especially a game as large as final fantasy) But that doesn't mean its not worth doing. I'm sure you would learn bucketfuls doing even just a little bit of this game
Final Fantasy 1 for Rm2k3
Doesn`t mean it can`t be done again.
And better.

Look, even Ocean's Paradise Blue is sort of a Final Fantasy 1 remake.
Except it's pretty much an original game. So just follow your stream of creativity ;-;
And I second @grindalf
You know, I have to say that this would not be difficult, just time-consuming. A person could do it after studying RPG Maker software for a year. I think that it can be done without any kind of knowledge of Ruby programming.

But as I say in every single thread where a person wants to remake an FF game: If you have the potential to recreate FF, why not just make a new game that is just as good?

I completely agree with this. My current project started as a remake of The Final Fantasy Legend(which, granted, is actually a SaGa game and was only marketed as FF in the US to profit from the then very popular brand name). It took a year or so development hell to realize that remaking it was a terrible idea, and I've slowly been phasing in original elements and trying to build something that would be fun to play while still being a bit nostalgic for those familiar with the game.

If you're dead set on it, I think you should start by designing a system that looks and feels like FF1 and build your game upon that. Start with the original story and build upon it. Don't just copy it word for word(a mistake I originally made) - Use it for inspiration. Treat the project as a learning experience and don't be afraid of breaking the game to learn something new. Hell, at least half my ideas came as a result of a failed idea.

JosephSeraph put it pretty well:

I tried doing this a long time ago.

Needless to say, it did not work out well.

Hasn't final fantasy been remade for like... five times now?
Wonderswan, PS1 (probably the most legit version in respect of being the original but with bug fixes and better UI/GFX/Sound), GBA, and PSP from the top of my head. Then I looked it up on wikipedia and there's an MSX version and mobile for ios, android, and windows phone!

FF4 is tied with FF1 for the most ports, take FF1 but scratch the MSX port and replace it with the FF4DS remake. But if you include FF4TAY.... well let's not. Fuck TAY.

e: Counting ports as a remake. Knowing how poorly these guys keep their original assets I wouldn't be surprised if half the ports were remakes because they lost the source code again.
What I've decided to do is to make a sequel to the original. The remake idea was good at first, but the combat system was unique until you realized it was just a port of the D&D 3.5 combat system. I like the ATB system, but hate the way all of the FF games except FF4 executed it, so that's what I'm going to try to use. We'll see what happens... I've gotten the entire plot written out, including about 20% of the dialog. I have the world map created and fleshed out (including the entire, detailed order of events/quests), and as many of the maps as the RPGMVXA Lite will let me make. The upgrade to the full version will happen next week.
And still, they didn't make a 3D remake. )': (I'd be SO happy -- that's the kind of remake FF1 deserves. Of course, with proper expanded gameplay mechanics and world lore.)

This is cool! I say for you; Go ahead! Whenever you have something significant done feel free to ask me for help, testplaying and stuff, I won't mind :3
Of course, only after you actually do have something significant done, such as, uh, a page that has been regularily updated for months, a demo, etc xD

I look forward to this project! It'll probably be pretty cool ^^

Agreed, that would have been awesome to see it updated in the same manner that FF4, FF3 and FF4TAY got updated with the 3D graphics. I'd also love to see FF6 redone like that.

Once I've got a playable demo up and running, I'll get it posted. I'm in the long, arduous process of teaching myself how to create events. =D
FF1's plot is a bit of a nonentity. I would advise mocking up an original plot. It doesn't have to be complex.

If that's too hard, just call it Last Fantasy and change Garland's name to Gary.

Seriously though, you could make an original game taking concepts and cues from FF1 to lay the groundwork, and you'll have an interesting production you can really call your own.

edit: I just saw your post about how you're going to turn it into a sequel. That's good too!
Just an update; the maps are entirely done, and much of the character and NPC artwork is done. I am actively working on the battle system. Much of the dialogue is done, as well as much of the equipment, spells, and items...
Cool! Put a gamepape up, will you? :D

I know you've kind of given up on your original idea, mbuzdor, but I'm actually interested in doing it if you still want someone to work with.

Trihan, shouldn't you finish Tundra before remaking a remake of a remake that's been remade after the remake?

I should, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to.
