Oh, really? What, exactly, makes books a higher art form than movies?

Hahah you took the bait!

Aside from that your example is pretty stupid because you could just as well compare East of Eden to Debbie Does Dallas!

Which is to say: dinosaurs.

Give me a break did you even read my post? I didn't dismiss Dark Knight as an action movie - I dismissed it as an action movie that follows the conventions of a Hollywood action movie. There is a distinction!
Granted, but you brought up the High Art/Low Art divide as if it supported your point.
I finally saw The Dark Knight today. I don't have much to add but the Joker literally redefined evil, twisted, psychotic, and demented. Holy flippin' crap it was so awesome.

The disappearing pencil trick was awesome. I also enjoyed the part when all he wanted was just a phone call...

Batman was a huge letdown though. He looked fake, the mask looked like a halloween constume at a dollar shop, and the fake voice he played off was entirely crappy. Luckily the Joker was so awesome that he made up like 300 times fold for any slack that was given.

I vote we just give say that this movie is an entire new art form. Like, officially make being evil an art, because the Joker's evilness was beautiful to say the least.

So, if the movie had fewer action sequences, its deeper themes would be legitimate? Lots of movies (even snobby, artsy movies) attempt to portray the depravity of man, but fail hard in comparison to Dark Knight.

I think part of the issue is that it's showing how depraved a man is, not how depraved man is.. It was actually pretty humanistic about the nature of man in general. Look at the scene with the Ferries for proof of that. And even the other baddie in this movie (I can't imagine anyone is going to be surprised by it, but I'll be vague in case someone was living on Pluto while everyone else was learning the Batman mythos) took quite a bit to snap. And before he snapped, he was mostly a pretty okay guy. Even avoided a lot of pitfalls he could've fallen in.

I don't think the Joker being as deeply disturbed as he was necessarily says anything about humans in general, at least nothing that we didn't already know. And maybe part of the reason the Joker's evil in this movie isn't as effective on some of us is that...

...well those of us who follow comics at all know that the Joker has done a lot worse than the stuff he did in this movie. Are you familiar with the backstory of Oracle?

To quote from TV Tropes' write up for Joker's "Rape the Dog" moment:
Although it's hard for this effect to truly apply to The Joker, considering the grotesque and disturbing nature of many of his crimes, many people thought that "The Killing Joke" -- in which The Joker kidnapped and savagely crippled Barbara Gordon, then subjected Commissioner Gordon to a funhouse ride plastered with giant photos of his daughter naked and bleeding -- took things a teensy bit far. Ironic, considering the Joker's backstory introduced in the story was trying to paint him up as sympathetic.
...and it's all a result of the Joker having a bad childhood. :P

So, Batman is cool right? Am I right?

The current Batman/Bruce Wayne might be cool, but could he get a reservation at Dorsia?
This was an amazing comment.
Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?

Hahaha yes! High five to Dis and Mog.

@Natook: Yeah, I'm kinda unsure with the raspy voice taken on when he becomes Batman, but it does make sense that Bruce would want to mask his own voice the best he can. As for the costume, I dunno, didn't have a problem with it. Though I'm hearing from people all over that they didn't like it.

PS: Is that a rain coat?

Yes it is! In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.
Wow, this thread has evolved quite a bit from a simple "Dark Knight" discussion thread.

I just want to see the damn movie.

I honestly think if I lived in Gotham City I could figure out who Batman is.. If I heard his voice that is haha I mean it's like so recognizable after you hear it then Bruce Wayne.
I finally saw this the other night. It was incredibly good.
Ledger was amazing as Joker, and Eckhart turned in a solid performance as well.
The rest of the cast where good as well. Two-Face was gruesome, many audible gasps were heard when he was first reveled.

I did have some minor quibbles, but nothing really worth noting.

Here is a question I had though (spoilers)

Did Batman really have to take the fall for Dent? Couldn't they have just blamed it on the Joker or something?
Even with my bleeding eyes in the front row.
I was able to enjoy this film, it was a little
on the long side. But I really enjoyed it.
The Joker really made this film, saddens me
of Heath's death...

Anyways, can't wait to get the bootleg
DVD!!

I would just like everyone to know that I saw this movie for the second time today ;D

Well I have been called a megalomaniac AND a dinosaur over the course of this thread so

I don't know if there is much else to say!
This movie was so full of win. I'd watch it again just to see the Joker one more time.
Yeah, this was one of the best movies of the year. The Joker was played brilliantly by Heath Ledger. Took forever to get a ticket to this.
