SUBMISSION RULES: UPDATE - ADDENDUM ADDED BECAUSE FFS PEOPLE!
Posts
author=LockeZTruth be told, the 3 ingame screens rule is as a result of people submitting a default VX titlescreen, a sprite sheet of ripped resources (like, seriously, the sprite sheet. Like, exported resources), and a screenshot of their desktop with RPG Maker open with their game in edit mode. Or things of that ilk (like a badly resized fanart with MS Paint words typed in slightly off-center titlescreens)
I'm not sure where this idea that a map is "playable content" and a menu isn't comes from. Neither one can be played. They're both just background graphics that appear during different points in the gameplay.
I'm not saying you should actually accept a game based on a shitty, unimpressive title screen. You shouldn't accept games based on shitty, unimpressive screenshots of maps either. I really think what you should do is allow screenshots of any part of the game, but increase the minimum number of screenshots to eight or ten.
Or, hell, require a trailer video for every submission.
If the fact that this has happened enough times to warrant a specific wording change should depress you. It is no wonder Magi went insane...
It used to be that you needed just 1 image. Then we required 3 images. Now we require 3 ingame images. Anything after that, then it just becomes a judgment call based on our Bad Content Ban rules and general submission guidelines.

This is the crap the rule targets.
(Granted, in this specific example the description is also stellar, but you get the idea)

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

@Kentona: That makes me so sad.
@JosephSeraph: Yes, they do. There is absolutely no excuse for not being able to record a video of your game. Illiterate ten year olds can figure live streaming out, so I'm sure anyone who's already proven themselves capable of actually creating computer software can record a fucking mpeg.

@LockeZ I've been trying to figure how to record and edit my speedpaint videos for quite a while now @-@
I seem to have a 20% sucess rate for some reason whenever I try ._.
This time around it seems like Movie Maker in windows 8 arbitrarily doesn't accept AVI, for example, something that has never happened to me before xD
but we can always make a static image trailer LOL XDDD
edit:
And whoa @kentona that's stunning. Lol
But hey, they're probably 10 year olds trying rpg maker for their first time, so it's really understandable :3
I hope they see what they're doing and become great makers in the future ^w^
edit:
Like, I remember this time when I was 11 or 12, and I messaged a really awesome maker back at GamingW (i'm a real fan of his and well, 90% of my color knowledge comes from his work) telling him that the music in his game was bad, and that I knew where he could get Final Fantasy MIDIs.
They were his own composed music.
And I didn't even have a fucking musical taste to begin with.
I feel thoroughly embarassed -- and guilty for that up to today. And nowdays I absolute adore his music. I simply had a shitty taste.
Kids can be absolutely stupid. But they're kids xD <3

In game screens show you a lot more of what to expect in a game than a title screen. I've already made my arguments for this but let's put it to the test, shall we?
Here are a few title screens. Tell me which ones you'd allow on the site just by these images and which you wouldn't. Then I'll show you whether they made it or not and why. No cheating now~
The answers?
1 - No. All they showed aside from that title screen were spritesets. The description is more of an advertisement for their yet-unfinished book, complete with asking people to email them if they wish to read what they currently have.
2 - No. They used only sample maps. That is incredibly lazy. Also, there were questions about the kind of jokes used in the game - he mentioned that anything that upset the player was basically their own issue, which usually means the inclusion of racial and sexual hate talk. When I PM'd him to ask he never replied so I took that to mean he had reason not to.
3 - Yes. They added more than enough in-game images for me to check over. It got accepted right away.
4 - Yes. The mapping is of a decent standard.
5 - No. The only other images added were faces created through one of those anime avatar generators on sparkly background. The description also needed fixing.
6 - No. Mapping wasn't up to the standards required. It's pretty bad.
7 - No. It needed another in-game image, but the description needed a big fixing as well. The images weren't bad but one was a world map with just towns slapped on a plain and the other was default battle system against default enemies, which is fine but maybe a map of inside a house or some dialogue of some kind would have helped. But yeah, major issue with this one was the description. Also, it was set as commercial.
8 - No. All they showed were a few face portraits. They're nice, yeah, but since this is supposed to be a commercial game, showing people what you're trying to sell them is a necessity.
Then we get games like this a lot too:
Standards are there so people who want to play games don't have to wade through the ones with the least effort put into them. They exist so that creators can push a little harder and learn a bit more if they fall short of the (pretty low) mark. They serve to protect game creators from flaming and hate, to protect players from time wasting and annoyance.
RMN may run on a drama core but we don't want to overflow the engines.

None of them made it? Was Legend of Larry nothing but empty maps with Ralph or Eric as the lead?

Nah, it's explained in my revised post. Some of them did make it, some didn't. Keep in mind I had to go trawling pretty far back to find most of these because most games do get through.
Yeah I see it now; this whole topic is actually really good for people like me who have yet to submit a game.
So 6/8, do I at least get a consolation prize?
I'll probably go ahead and wait until I can at least put down 5-8 in-game images before I submit mine. It's good to know though that most people take it seriously enough that you have to search for good examples of bad submissions.

I would absolutely have denied Legend of Larry and Thin Walls based purely on their title screens. No matter how good the rest of the game is, if that's what they decided to showcase, they're gonna get what they asked for.
Hence why the in-game images are what we use to check quality by first and foremost instead of title screens - some people can't make a good title to save themselves, some don't care and just use the RTP ones and others can find pretty images and make pretty art but not map to the lowest standard the site allows. (Which is pretty easy a bar to leap over.)
In the case of a game showing only three images, they must be in-game ones. Anything more than that is gravy - deliciously thick and heavy gravy. Preferably onion flavoured.

i feel like this thread's been goin' on for longer than ever
btw if i want to make the next classic on rpg maker and still use default title screens then why not

I don't have an issue with that at all. But expecting someone to judge the quality of your game based on your title screen... That's the issue at hand. As has been said, title screens do count towards quality, yes, but only in addition to the initial 3 in-game images. The point I was illustrating with those images was that just taking a title screen as the main judging point of a game is silly. Some people can't title, some people can. Some people don't care either way and judging whether a game is quality solely based on that is quite frankly, impossible.

All issues of writing style and general ridiculousness aside, this condtradicts itself in well under a hundred words.
@Liberty: Wow, I guess that really goes to show you can't judge a game by its title screen! Why was Priestess of the Holy Sythe denied? It doesn't look THAT terrible, unless I"m missing something.
Edit3: I'm really glad LockeZ is not in charge of the subqueue.

None of those caught my eye, except maybe number 5 and the last one. The former tells me the author can do some digital painting, and the later tells me the author knows something about graphic design. Both useful bits of information for me as a player/artist... But I find this exercise to be a bit unfair because I would never accept a game based on its title screen ONLY, and I'm not asking you to do this either! This is like the third time I say it. Why do you do this to me, Liberty? Why do you hate me sooooo!!??? T_T
I think I worded this fairly clear. All I'm asking from you is not to categorically dismiss title screens as one of the three screenshots that would help you decide to accept a game or not. If you think necessary to ask the author for another type of screen, you still can do that. If you think necessary to reject, or to ask a screenshot to be improved based on its quality, you still can do that. Nothing has changed! But if by some cosmic happenstance you come across a title screen that is fairly 'unique', consider it, please.
_
Then there's the argument about "playability". How do we decide what's "playable" and what isn't. Are cut-scenes playable, for instance? Many would argue they are not. How many times have we heard platitudes like: "I want to play the game not watch a movie/read a book"? ...But here's the thing. I'm of the opinion that as a creative community with people from all walks of life -with backgrounds from different disciplines- we should be striving to get rid of that type of mentality, and many others, such as: "RTP sucks" or "Music is not important" or "Title screens are not In-game/are not playable". Eventhoughthteytotallyarebothofthosethingsbydefinition.

The games submission queue has already claimed the lives of Magi, Karsuman and Deckiller. How many more lives must be sacrificed to satiate your desire for misguided leniency?
I'm going to make a game that's played entirely on the title screen.

I don't hate you, ae. Not a bit! I like and respect you too much to hate you~ ^.^
We just differ in opinion on this point. I don't believe that title screens should be part of the 3 required images and I already pointed out the reasons for such three times too. :P
That being that you get more information of a game from in-game images than title/gameover/concept art. That's not to say I don't take those into consideration when they are extras. If a game comes through where the 3 required are a bit iffy but concept art and presentation of title/game over screens look sharp then I'll be more inclined to let it through - provided a quick google of the images doesn't show they were grabbed from a random wallpaper site to make their game look nicer (all my hate for those kind of sites. Seriously. All of it.)
It's not like I'm denying a bunch of games over this, either. Of the games that come through, maybe 1/4 are asked to fix the page (either add another screenie or, mostly, writing issues). And most of those make it through (or get denied again because they just hit the resubmit again or tried to fix the description on their own while only having a loose grasp on it. Most denials are based on writing errors.)
I should crunch some numbers.
@LC: As long as you say it's played on the title screen so I know that that is part of the game, that's fine. There are exceptions to every rule, after all.

Liberty if you ever need any help with the submissions queue I seem to have an ungodly amount of free time right now. Just saying.
